We are looking for an energetic, community-minded person to be the face of the Milkweed Mercantile.

The Milkweed Mercantile is a strawbale inn that includes four guest rooms, a commercial kitchen, and a large dining room. It was opened by long-time Dancing Rabbit members, Kurt and Alline, in 2010, and serves as a major hub of activity during visitor programs serving meals and hosting guests. The Mercantile is a vital element of the community, hosting internal community events, as well as folks from afar who want to move to community, visit friends and family here, or just enjoy a weekend at a slower pace. The Center for Sustainable and Cooperative Culture at Dancing Rabbit has begun managing operations. Outside of programs, we host guests from Airbnb, various kitchen projects including the dairy cooperative, and occasional events in the dining room. We are currently not offering food to the public and the bar is closed.

The innkeeper is responsible for day-to-day operations of the building and the business, helping attract visitors, managing reservations, and communicating with guests. They welcome and support inn guests during their stay and meet all the interesting people that come to stay at this cozy ecovillage inn. This is a great opportunity to jump into an intentional community and get to know lots of like-minded people, while serving in a valuable capacity for Dancing Rabbit.

We welcome applications from people who are not currently living in Northeast Missouri, but are willing to move here for the 2024 visitor season (April through October). We would love to find someone who is willing to commit for the long-term, but a commitment through fall 2024 is a sufficient starting place. This is a part-time position with variable hours depending on time of year and program cycle, though you can expect an average of 10-15 hours per week from May through October. If you would like to generate additional income, it may be possible to create more hours at the Milkweed Mercantile or to find additional roles at Dancing Rabbit. Pay is $12.50/hour. The innkeeper will be responsible for their housing and living expenses, and we are happy to help find suitable accommodations.

Once again, this is a great opportunity for a friendly, organized person who has always wanted to live at Dancing Rabbit, but isn’t quite sure what they would do for income. We are excited to welcome the right person into this position who can maintain the Milkweed Mercantile’s reputation of warm and friendly hospitality and keep our guests coming back again and again.
