While the planet sustains damage inflicted by humans’ poor ecological actions, there are amazing stories of our world’s resilience. Have you heard of Cryptococcus neoformans fungi? (Yeah I didn’t know it by this name either.) It is the fungi that lives at the site of Chernobyl, one of humankind’s grand mistakes. Despite this toxic accident, life is returning throughout this humanless area. This fungi in particular is using the radiation to create energy, through melanin, in a
process called radiosynthesis. This is one of many examples of the planet being harmed, yet adapting and thriving.
Â
I hope that Dancing Rabbit will serve a similar role. Will these oases provide the model and space for species to adapt? What new lessons will nature teach us? Can we adapt to the changes that the planet is enduring? Can living intentionally in harmony with the natural world serve as a model for a possible future for humans as climate change shifts our accustomed norms? I hope so, and I imagine you do as well.
Â
Whether or not you are able to move to Dancing Rabbit and join our project, I urge you to consider yourself part of the mission. What are you doing that creates resilience around you? What message of inspiration do you model for the world? What lessons can we learn from each other, as we traverse the planet of Earth?
