Synopsis A greedy king who believes that possessions bring happiness covets an artist's exquisite quilts that are given only to the needy. Through music, a bit of dance, laughter and drama, the king learns the lesson that "the giving is the gift". The play is one of the few that can truly be enjoyed by audiences ages 4 to 90, and has been a favorite with Phoenix audiences for years.

Character Breakdown

1 Child (male or female age 8-13): Small vocal range. Could possibly be played by a young soprano actress posing as a little boy.

The Old Man (50's-60's): Non-singing role. Warm, gentle, magical spirit.

The Quiltmaker (50's-60's): Soprano, non-belted, Middle C-F#. A magical, mysterious, timeless quality to her.

The King (30's-40's): Baritenor. Low A to High F#. Lonely, greedy, self-centered who becomes transformed through the gift of giving.

Players (variety of ages): Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses. Players in a traveling theatre company. Must sing, move well and able to play a variety of character roles.


Additional Info

There are some day time weekday performances planned for school groups, in addition to Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday and perhaps Saturday matinees. Compensation may be provided for these workday performances.


What To Prepare

Please prepare 16 bars of a song and two contrasting monologues. Dress for movement.
