Synopsis
The Hernandez family from Altar, Sonora (all U.S. citizens since Papa Hernandez, AKA “Bato”, got amnesty under President Reagan) hears that Donald Trump is running for president and decide to walk to Phoenix by Nov. 8 to vote against him–except for Bato’s son, Norab, who’s a rabid Trump and Duck Dynasty fan. Along the way, they meet a cast of oddly familiar characters based on the totally insane stuff that’s happened since the kickoff of this presidential campaign. Comedy ensues. Really.

Stage/Live:
Casting: Adults & Children

Character Breakdown

Approximately 20 roles, all ages, genders, ethnicities (we routinely cast across type). Actors are routinely asked to play more than one role. You might play Chewbacca and you might play the U.S. Attorney General. We don't have a list of specific characters to post here today because the script is being updated as we speak based on unfolding news events.

Additional Info

This play is written in English, mostly, with a splash of Spanish for good measure. The "pastorela" is a traditional satirical farce produced throughout Latin America and now in many cities in the United States. This show is inspired by the likes of Mel Brooks, George Lopez, Jon Stewart, Lalo Alcaraz, Saturday Night Live (when it was funny) and Cantinflas. New Carpa was founded in 2002 by James E. Garcia to produce Latino and multicultural theater (usually, but not always, stuff written by James). And in case you're wondering, we have nothing against white people. Some of our best friends are white people and we often cast them in our plays. Just ask Bob. FYI, James Garcia has written more than 30 plays and he sometimes acts and directs. Come and play.

What To Prepare

You are welcome to prepare a monologue, but it is not required. Dress casually. Be prepared for a cold read.

Call For Crew

Stage manager, costume, lighting, set designers, social media geeks. You name it we'll need it. This is community theater at its best (you can take that however you like) an we're damned proud of it.
