Hello Friends,
After my last newsletter, where we spoke about ways in which we can communicate with our bodies when we are in pain, I have been experimenting and practicing different techniques that focus on
speaking with my body. One of the techniques that I really enjoyed was qi-walking.
Qi-walking asks you to walk slowly while being mindful and aware of the energy that is flowing within. It is like practicing qigong while you are moving. When we practice qigong exercises, the slower we go through the motions and the more mindful we are about our slow and steady movements, the more energy flows through within us. I wanted to apply this feeling and sensation while I walked, so I slowed down my
walking and integrated qigong practices into how I walk. I was mindful and focused on each step that I took – placing the heel down first, feeling the energy of balance that came with it, speaking with my foot saying how thankful I am for it, and then lifting my foot off the ground and repeating this process with each step.
The feeling was amazing!
Before my knee replacement surgery, I was basically chasing after to do lists, making sure things were getting done quickly. I would often find myself multitasking and not being too present in the present moment.
After having my knee replacement surgery, and recovering these last couple of months, I have realized the peace and clarity that comes when I slowdown in every aspect of life.
And by practicing qi-walking; talking,
thinking, doing dishes, to do list etc… has been helping me to feel better as I recover and heal myself after my surgery. During my physical therapy, I was taught how to make my way up and down
steps. At home, I began to practice going up and down three steps daily. One day, my body and I were ready to go up and down more steps and so I ventured forward! I was able to go up and down 10 stairs effortlessly!
I encourage you to reflect and examine all of the activities that you do throughout one day. Make a note where you are rushing or chasing after tasks and to-do lists. Then, reflect and examine where you may be able to slow down to practice qi-walking. Try to qi-walk for a few minutes, then at times spread throughout a day, and then perhaps at times spread throughout a week. Record how you are feeling after each session and see if you feel a difference in how your body feels and how you connect with your body.
Have you ever experience slowing down in all aspects of life? If yes how did you feel?
If not, try and drop me an email, I would love to hear about your experiences.
