How Do Box Office vs Streaming Compare this Year?

The past two years, hundreds of filmmakers have contacted us to say things like "the box office is dead," or "only streaming matters now" or "you can't get a distribution deal unless it's for streaming" and my favorite, "Covid changed the entertainment landscape forever."

Is this really true? Let's look at some stats to see. According to Box Office Mojo, Q3 2021 gross box office revenue was $200M. Up significantly from Q3 2021, which was $41M. In 2019, Q3 box office was $540M. So we are not fully "back to normal," but the trend is upward and highly dependent on local health guidelines.

Now, how about streaming? According to The Digital Entertainment Group, rental revenue, including VOD, is down 14% YOY. Which makes sense given the health and safety climate and loosening restrictions.

So what do you think? Is the Box Office dead? We do not.
