Follow Up to "Still Looking for Film Financing?"

A few weeks ago we asked you if you were still looking for film financing. We got a lot of replies, so thank you for that. It turns out not one of the filmmakers read the article we linked to (10 Steps to Attract Film Investors), and we know this because those that attached the docs did not have a proper greeting on their emails (ie, Dear Melissa or Dear FilmProposals) and those that did, had no proof of work already done.

What this means is that, to date, we KNOW filmmakers who have followed our Steps to Attract Investors HAVE raised some or all of their financing and made their movies. And that no one has been able to dispute or disprove our process, tools and templates.

This makes sense, of course, because we failed before we succeeded. It was our successful film financing path that got us our first film funding, and now the process has been improved upon by 100s of successful filmmakers since. It also means money is not holding anyone back from making their film - at least not these filmmakers.

Here are the filmmakers who cannot be helped:

A studio had the script for over a year and opted out. The filmmaker attached 3 photographs to their email.
Another filmmaker described their project and then told us, “You cannot expect a script writer / director to become a producer with funding. I am now want financiers who can be my Executive producer. That is all.” There were no attachments to review.
A filmmaker told us their plans to raise financing and made sure to add, “PS. I'll be in touch with Tom Maloy. I am interested in his materials.” – LOL! Good Luck!
This filmmaker clearly put a lot of thought, time and effort into their plan. However, their business model is a non-profit and the docs submitted were a grant application, not a Business Plan. This type of application deviates so significantly from our recommended tools and templates, we were unable to provide any realistic advice. That doesn’t mean different types of materials won’t work – we hope they do! - but it means it’s outside of the scope of what we can offer as there were 12 pages of words with no summary or visuals.
Another filmmaker emailed a paragraph from his “veteran” film producer, telling us how much he was raising and the producer “has been in talks with three motion picture distribution companies,” but offered no more than that. No credentials on the producer, no financials, no ROI, etc.

A very professional filmmaker who already made a short, has skin in the game, identified ways to come up with part of his budget showing investors how they have already reduced risk/exposure, and attached an extremely professional looking Pitch Deck and Look Book. What was unclear to us, and was in our advice, was who were these very pretty documents with a lot of creative/visuals and little numbers for? People already in the industry or someone like a dentist? We also recommended they make the financial and target audience picture clearer. There were a lot of very pretty photos and not a lot of business in the documents. Pretty doesn’t translate to business (depending on the target investor). Business translates to business.

So that's our follow up. We appreciate the filmmakers who took the time to email us. We wish we had some better feedback so you could learn more. But, hey, as we always say, your competition may be high quantity, but it is most definitely not high quality. Meaning, you have every advantage moving forward to stand out and shine!

For hundreds of filmmakers, we have seen proof that if you use all the funds available like tax incentives, grants, in-kind donations, back end agreements and other soft money; create a compelling business case and reach out to the right people in the right way, you can raise your film financing. 1000's of filmmakers have done this.

So we want to hear from you if you think you've done everything you can, but still haven't completed your film. Maybe we'll do some case studies to see where the sticking points are - yes, FREE film financing consulting. Our goal is that NO filmmaker has hurdles in the way to making their film - other than hard work, which is the one thing NO ONE else can do for you.

Go ahead and hit reply and tell us where you are in the process and what's holding you back from producing. We can only help those who try and help themselves. In your response, please tell us exactly what you've done towards each of our 10 Steps to Attract Film Investors.

Here's what we want to know:

1) What you've done to show you take film investors seriously

2) What financing options have you researched and/or received? (see Skin in the Game in the article above)

3) The correspondence and documents you've been sending - all emails, cover letters, investor pitch decks, business plans, etc

If you haven't done at least this much, and can't show it, then we already have the answer as to why you haven't made your movie yet. If you believe you have followed the proven film financing process, and still have roadblocks, please send us at least the 3 things above, and at most, all 10 listed here 10 Steps to Attract Film Investors and we'll do our best to help you.

If you reply asking for money or telling us about your idea or script, then we already know what's holding you back. But, for those who have been serious about financing, we want to hear from you so please tell us where you are stuck!
