What's new?
We're back to a mask mandate... thank goodness. Our C-19 numbers are rising again.... I can live with the damn mask. Just don't shut down businesses again!
I lectured 'in' South Africa on Sunday - virtually. A bit of a time zone miscalculation and being told the wrong start time meant a phone call at 4:50am saying "Laurie are you there?" I survived and I think all went well.
Now I'm gearing up for our Canadian Animal Rehab Division Advanced Canine Rehab Course. It'll be small - only 4 participants. But it will be a good 'toe in the water' getting back to 'live' teaching again.
So, that's it for the updates... !! On with the show...

Sarcopenia - A preventable age-related disease sequelae
|
|
Muscle is increasingly being recognized as having the character of an endocrine organ. When muscles contract they release signaling molecules called myokines, which have various regulatory effects throughout the body and brain, affecting visceral fat, inflammation levels, and cognition. For example, here’s a quote from a recent paper “Skeletal muscle has emerged as a potent regulator of immune system function [and] might be the
central integrator between sarcopenia and immune senescence in an aging biological system. Therapeutic approaches targeting skeletal muscle might be able to restore both muscle and immune system function.”1
Firstly, let’s define sarcopenia:
“Sarcopenia is a type of muscle loss (muscle atrophy) that occurs with aging and/or immobility. It is characterized by the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength. The rate of muscle loss is dependent on exercise level, co-morbidities, nutrition and other factors. The muscle loss is related to changes in muscle synthesis signalling pathways. It is distinct from cachexia, in which muscle is degraded
through cytokine-mediated degradation, although both conditions may co-exist. Sarcopenia is considered a component of frailty syndrome. Sarcopenia can lead to reduced quality of life, falls, fracture, and disability.”2

For over a year, I worked with Physiotec (an online exercise platform) to create a exercise prescription platform for canine rehab practitioners. And this is it!
I've put hundreds of exercises together onto this handy platform. You can find the exercises, print off a handout, send them a link to the VIDEOS of the exercises. There's so much: Massage, owner-friendly joint therapies, exercises, advisement, etc,
etc!
NOW... be aware that this platform is run by / owned by Physiotec (and they charge separately for it's use)... and the support for the website is via physiotec as well. The MAIN GLITCH I am finding now... is that when you e-mail or call tech-support you will NEED to LET THEM KNOW that your question pertains to FOURLEGEXERCISE! (Otherwise, it's a bit of a schmozzle to get sorted, because they direct you to the
Physiotec website vs FourLegExercise website!!!) Check it out and LET ME KNOW (what you think, your experiences, etc... so that I can report back if there are issues!)
I hope you find it useful!
Go there... Check it out!!!

Have a great week everyone!
