Message from Hope

My writing is back up to speed with no more meds or crutches. I'm feeling much better and getting adept at my distinct hobble, also stable enough to take my own shower and spend serious time at my desk again. I can see normal way down there at the end of the tunnel. Boot for a week. Special surgical shoe for two weeks, then trial and error indefinitely with sneakers. Yay!

In the middle of all of this, I've been reading like a crazy woman. I'm at 14 out of a 36-book goal on Goodreads. I'm keeping a nonfiction, a recipe, and a fiction book going at all times. It's like my brain converted writing time to reading, but some of that has to switch now.

I'm reading Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight V. Swain, and so far I cannot say enough good about it. He thinks like I think, where rules are there to consider but not in granite to comply with. However, you have to know the rules before you decide which ones to follow...the ones that make your personal work stronger.

I didn't start writing by following the rules. I wrote my story based on how I'd want to read it . . . with a nod to the good books I'd read. The craving to comply with all the rules can be a sign a writer fears doing something wrong.

However, the most important part of writing is to feel what you desire to write. Not be robotic and turn writing into an A-B-C or 1-2-3 type of rule following. I've known a lot of writers who felt the need to read dozens of how-to before putting pen to page.

This is a job where you learn best by doing, and feeling the energy of the story is the best place to start..

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS

HOW MUCH TO CHARGE?

You may not realize it, but I wrote the chapter "How Much Should I Charge?" in the 2022 Writer's Market this year. It was a humongous assignment, and until I did the research, I didn't realize how much had changed in the last five years as well as mid- and post-COVID.

Freelancers are very much alive and well. Employers have learned to embrace freelancers with a passion. Freelancers tackled social media as marketing tools and learned new methods of landing clients, establishing a brand, and networking.

But how much you should charge depends on so many factions:

1) your experience
2) your niche (and sub-niche)
3) your diversity in skills (i.e., more than writing an article)

You can get down into the reeds and try to break it down into small sub-factions, but these three major ones pretty much steer your ship and dictate your income.

A beginner is usually anyone with 0-3 years of experience, however, you will find the exceptions who leaped in and made six figures within two years. Many others will brag about how much they made in spurts, like four months, but the proof of success manifests itself in how well you can perform over an entire year, because there are high and low seasons within a year that tend to average out that income. An intermediate is 3-7 years and a professional 7+ years. If one cared to, they could call anyone over 15 years an expert.

I learned that beginners tended to charge conservatively and often adhering to whatever the client wanted to charge. Intermediates hit a comfortable range that pays well. The pros are ever hungry and charge a premium for their valuable time. In other words, the amount of self-assurance grows almost exponentially with age.

But if you really want to know what to charge, ask your peers. But an equally as valuable method is to look at things through the customer's eyes.

Foundation is a site that offers content services, and they posted an educational piece addressed to businesses on how to hire a content creator. The graphics are wonderful. But what is interesting is that they suggest in hiring a freelancer writer, they hang out where writers hang out. In other words, go to the social media and online sites where writers are - Facebook groups, Medium, even Instagram and YouTube/

The next best avenue is to ask fellow entrepreneurs for suggestions, especially through LinkedIn, but also through Quora, Reddit, and Slack.

So if the content hungry are hanging in those areas, why aren't you? The world is crazy busy with work for freelance writers. If ever there was a time to leap into the business, the time is now.

SUCCESS QUOTE

"...the universe of which we are a small and fleeting part — drags our bodies across the stage of the cosmic drama toward oblivion. And yet, somehow, in the swirl of it all, we go on living. If we are lucky enough, if we are alive enough, we go on making art, making meaning, making an effort to 'leave something of sweetness and substance in the mouth of the world.' ”

Case Study: Crowdfunding a Novel (Part 2 of 3)

By Dan Brotzel

(Read Part 1 here of this three-part series.)

2: Getting the orders in!

After getting the book deal signed with Unbound, we now had to raise a five-figure sum in pre-orders to get our manuscript turned into a real book.

One of the fun things Unbound does is teach you to offer different levels of pre-orders (pledges). These go all the way from basic ebook and paperback versions up to pricier bespoke levels. We offered book critiques, and various fun items “created” by some of the book’s dotty characters. Some actor friends recorded an audio version of the first few chapters, which we offered exclusively as another pledge. See a list of all our pledges here.

The first few weeks of crowdfunding proved easy. Friends and family chipped in generously, and the target ticked over nicely. (Unbound provides dashboards you can obsessively consult.) But then the pace starts to slow, and you start to reach out to former colleagues, school friends, neighbors, ex-neighbours, friends of friends… anyone you think might pre-order a book and not be offended by you asking.

This is the hardest part, and, honestly, I’m not sure we performed as well as we could have. We weren’t especially comfortable with selling to people we didn’t know very well or hadn’t been in touch with for a while. I think I blasted out lots of emails very quickly to get it over and done with, which probably didn’t give the best impression. (Unbound advises you to only send to a few people at a time, and to tailor your messages.) One old friend did get offended, and plenty more ignored us, but on a good note, I did revive a few friendships and there were some lovely surprises – including an order from my first boss of 30 years ago!

We tried other tactics as well. We gave a couple of talks to workplaces, and experimented (without success) with paid search ads and display ads in small magazines.

As well as sales, we looked to promotion and publicity through:
•    Articles about the book in local websites and papers
•    Content in lit mags about collaborating, crowdfunding etc.
•    Flyers in the library, clubs, shops, etc.
•    Promo messages on Twitter and Facebook groups

At first I was happy to write articles for sites that didn’t pay, thinking it would be enough just to get the book plugged. But this didn’t do much, so we decided to use the skills we had and write our way more professionally to the rest of our target.

We wrote over 70 paid articles, and ploughed all the proceeds into our target. We wrote for: Writer’s Digest, The Author, Boundless, The Millions, the SFWA blog, Writer’s Write, Re:Fiction, Pen & Prosper, Barefoot Writer and many more. I also wrote many pieces for FundsforWriters, and I am very grateful to Hope for all her support and guidance.

Gradually the target edged nearer, boosted by two incredibly generous contributions – one from a relative (anonymously) and another from a book-loving tech entrepreneur that I’d emailed about our “ask.”
We felt exhausted but elated when we hit the target. And then COVID arrived…

Key learnings:
•    Be prepared for the hard yards of promotional and sales hustle.
•    Have a good explanation ready for what crowdfunding is: many confuse it with vanity publishing.
•    Be prepared to supplement the publisher’s activity with your own promotional work any way you can.
•    Keep your supporters involved. (Unbound lets you email out updates.)
•    Be realistic about the money to raise and whether you can do it in time (books are sometimes withdrawn and monies returned if the funding stalls).

Part 3 to appear online and in next week’s newsletter. Read Parts 1 and 2 of this 3-Part piece at FundsforWriters.com.
