And the effects are far-reaching. When we see ourselves through the veil of negativity, rejection, and inadequacy, that’s what we come to expect from others and the world.
I have so much compassion for the inner critical voice because it shows we’ve somehow turned away from ourselves, believing limiting thoughts that just aren’t true.
Self-critical thinking was learned when we were young to cope as best as we could with difficult relationships with our caregivers. It was protective back then to keep ourselves hidden, safe, and as perfect as possible. It was a way to get attention or avoid pain. We came to believe that what others said about us was true.
If this painful tape is playing in your mind, it’s asking for your loving attention. Rather than believing what it says, question it. Don’t take it for granted or assume it’s telling the truth about you.
Start by neutralizing the language of these thoughts. Change it into words that are gentler and more supportive. In the spirit of love, peace, and harmony, let go of the inner name-calling and severe self-berating. And instead speak to yourself with words that transmit kindness, compassion, and possibility.
Then take a deep, expansive breath. Make space for the feelings underneath these critical thoughts, welcoming them in a warm and loving inner embrace. Feel the harshness of the inner critic transform into love and self-care.
Instead of the inner judging voice, consider activating your inner coach. Use your thoughts to support you in finding peace and ease within. Tell yourself encouraging things such as:
- I’m okay;
- I can do this;
- I’m here and breathing;
- It’s okay to step out of my comfort zone;
- These thoughts don’t define me;
- I’m bigger than these imagined limits.
Feel into the possibilities beyond anything your mind tells you.
If you live in the trance that makes you believe you’re inadequate and undeserving, neutralize your inner language. It’s a tool that will help to untangle these painful identities—leaving space for the shining brilliance of your true nature.
