Yes, we actually have an ultra-rare original 1658 printing of the 1658 "Savoy Declaration" outlining the Faith & Order of Congregational Churches. Â Collectors of Church History Confessions and Creeds typically search for many years to see one of these come onto the world market.Â
Â
This extremely historically important work declares that the early congregational churches (Baptists, for example, are congregational in their church governance), essentially accepted almost all of the Presbyterian Church's Westminster Confession of Faith, except for the part about church government.Â
Â
Think about that for a moment. Â Early Baptist and Independent Congregational Churches in England in the mid 1600's held to basically the same theology as the Calvinistic Presbyterians. Â We certainly cannot say that today! Â
Â
For the Reformed person today, I would think the sheer joy of teasing your Baptist friends with this proof that they used to be Calvinists, would alone be worth acquiring this piece. (The original owner of this estate piece was actually a Baptist, so he had a good sense of humor, and an appreciation for its foundational importance).Â
Â
This example is in excellent condition and nicely bound in leather with marbled boards. Â It is appraised at "$5,000", which I think is low, given the rarity and importance of this work. Â However, as part of the estate liquidation sale, the price has been dropped down to the surprisingly low point of only $1,750. Â Act fast, we only have one.
