October 4 to 7 this year will mark the 50th Anniversary of the Bathurst 1000 Endurance race and see over 180,000 V8 Supercar fans packing into the Mount Panorama track for their annual dose of mountain action. Originally built as a scenic tourist drive,Mount Panorama is now one of the most popular motor racing circuits attracting professional drivers from all around the world. The race is now a clash of the V8 Ford and V8 Holden 'titans' with fans pledging their allegiance in either Ford's blue colours or Holden's red. Holden currently hold the outright lead in victories over Ford 28-18. Mount Panorama's trackis 6.213km long, requiring the drivers to complete 161 laps in an anticlockwise direction to cover the 1000 kilometres of what have been described as merciless curves and unforgiving straights.
Every V8 Supercar driver wants to add a Bathurst 1000 'King of the Mountain' crown to their resume. It truly is the 'Great Race' of Australian Motorsport. To the winner goes the Peter Brock Trophy, inscribed with the words "King of the Mountain," named in honour of the most successful driver in the history of the race, who took line honours nine times!
Racing is very much a part of the Australian ethos and Australia's premier racing events include, the Melbourne Cup, for thoroughbred horses, the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race for boats and the Bathurst 1000 for V8 Supercars. The Bathurst 1000 takes place over four days in October, taking in practice and qualifying runs, official dinners, autograph sessions, a ball and street fair, and various other entertainment events.
Motorcar racing at Mount Panorama began in 1938 with its first race, the Australian Tourist Trophy, and continued through the years as the Bathurst 500, raced at 500 miles, before metrification changed its name to Bathurst 1000, raced at 1000 kilometres. Since 2000 the Bathurst 1000 has been run exclusively for V8 Supercars and the race has been between Ford and Holden each year.
50th Anniversary commemorative merchandise and souvenirs will be popular if the fact that most of the accommodation, hospitality and tour packages to Bathurst 1000 were sold out by February this year.
