Happy Halloween to those who celebrate!
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Have you ever met anyone who prefers larfy, airy bud over dense nugs? Me neither. Dense buds feel better in your hands, they break apart better, and they contain more weed. In short, dense bud is better. Learn how to make sure your cannabis plants grow hordes of sticky, rock-hard nugs!
- Today's article includes a list of density-boosting supplements, but do you need supplements to produce great weed? Learn the answer today!
- I published an article about autoflowering strains a few weeks ago, which you loved (thank you for the compliments, you all put a smile on my face), but some of you have asked for a detailed breakdown of photoperiod vs autoflowering strains with pros and cons. I put together a guide for you this week!
- What's the latest scoop with seed companies including Seedsman? I learned some insider information this week, don't miss it!
- We've been posting trophy pictures for years now, and one thing that's struck me is how professional pictures look these days. The technology is helping, no doubt, but you guys have definitely learned how to take some beautiful photographs. Check out this week's tasty selection below!

How To Grow Dense Cannabis Buds
🌱➡💪🌳 😲

Say “No” to Small, Airy Buds!
Grow Fat, Dense Cannabis Buds!
Buds can be airy or dense. Often buds come out airy due to a mistake on the part of the grower, though some strains will grow airy no matter what.
Density is just one aspect of bud quality (and maybe one of the least important), but many growers would like to grow denser buds either because they like how it looks or because they would like to increase their yields. If that's you, you're in luck because you are about to learn the secret to growing dense buds.
By the end of todays article, you will be a density master!
Top 5 Most Common Reasons for Airy Marijuana Buds
-
Light – The most common reason buds aren’t dense is the plant didn’t get enough light in the flowering stage. Light is like food for the plant. Although cannabis plants can survive in relatively low light levels, they won’t produce much bud. Up to a point, more light in the flowering stage = bigger buds. On the flip side, too-bright light (less common, but can happen when buds are too close to grow lights) can also cause buds to develop poorly and/or produce airy, hairy fox-tails.
-
Strain / Genetics – Some strains will only produce loose buds no matter what you do. For example, Sativa plants often grow buds that are less dense, while Indica strains tend to grow more compact buds. Although one isn’t necessarily better than the other, if you want dense buds it’s important to start with genetics that produce dense buds.
-
Temperature – Cannabis wants the temperature just right for optimal bud growth. Conveniently, this is about the same temperature as what’s comfortable for humans. Too hot
temperatures in the flowering stage (especially above 85°F/30°C) can cause plants to develop loose buds, grow airy foxtails, and experience herming (which makes buds stop fattening and become seedy).
-
Nutrients – Buds won’t fatten and get dense unless they’re getting the right nutrients at the right time, which means...

Do you need supplements to grow great weed?
|
|
There are an overwhelming number of cannabis supplements to choose from
Subject: Which cannabis supplements are actually necessary?
“This is what puzzles me most, is all the nutrient companies have a “basic” nutrient line and then they have all the “extra” stuff they want you to give the plant to make big better buds. You can read in forums that growers think the extra stuff rocks and other say that it sucks. The companies all claim theirs is the best. I have not seen a study that shows bigger buds are more potent or even healthier. I wonder if it is like when you compare an organically grown
apple to a non-organic apple. The Non-organic one is bigger and shiner but the taste and texture (the important things) do not compare to the organic one. Are all the “extra” really better or would the plant be happier without them?”

My Reply:
Oooh, this is a great question! So here’s the thing. You need base nutrients, and that’s it. You can get all the way to harvest with the most amazing and top-quality buds ever, with even cheap base nutrients and nothing else.
However, obviously, it’s more complicated than just that.
One thing I’ll say, and when you talk to growers who have tried a lot of different nutrient lines, you’ll often hear this…

Auto-Flowering vs Photoperiod Strains
|
|
What's the difference between photoperiod vs auto-flowering strains? What are the pros and cons of each?
I received several questions about this since I released my auto-flowering guide, so I wrote a new article just for you.
Here's a quick summary of the biggest difference:
|
Now that you have an idea of what they are, get the answer to the big question:
What's going on with Seedsman?
|
|
Check out what I learned this week!
|
Last Sunday I shared that that the long-time trusty seed vendor Seedsman has revamped their website and may even have been purchased (like Crop King, Sonoma Seeds, etc). As a result we are keeping them
off our seeds page while we investigate.
I spoke with a staff member from Seedsman and she said that the Seedsman brand and logo were updated, and the new website is up and running with a new look, but didn't say anything about whether Seedsman is being run by a new company or not.
Here's their new logo if you haven't seen it:
So is Seedsman under new management or not? At this point I'm not sure.
What's next in the investigation? Last week I put an order through the website to see what happens. I'm curious to see if the seeds ship from the same place and the same way as they normally do. I'll let you know how it goes. If you've ordered from Seedsman since they changed the website, let us know your experience by hitting the reply button.
Stay tuned for the next update!

"I am celebrating 25 years of growing this year. I started indoors in rockwool and now grow outdoors in pots. The grow pictured is almost 100% organic. 32 grow bags, 7 gallons each, 12 strains, several phenos including my own cross of Loudmouth (east coast sour diesel x abusive og) X Lemon Larry OG. I call this Loudmouth Larry and am in process of stabilizing her to brand and market. The grow is 150 sq. ft. on my 2nd floor patio. The soil is a living soil mix
that i made and am re-using.
I have been following GWE for about 10 years and recommend regularly as one of the best places to get good info on all aspects of growing. I am sending you some more pics including a landrace purple afghan cross that I've been working with. Blackjack is a growcat and longtime companion. Peace"
~Mark
I love everything about these pics: the huge plants, the dark colas, the chill growers. But let's be honest, Blackjack the "growcat" is the star of the show. 😻 (This is an impressive grow, by the way. A+ grow, even without the kitty.) ~Sirius

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Make sure you get good seeds!
Don't let a seed scammer take your money!
Have you received a direct message from an unknown account offering to sell you seeds? Maybe the account name and picture seem familiar, but the spelling seems off or something is not quite right...
If this happens, watch out! Legitimate seed companies and breeders wait for you to contact them. Someone who contacts you first to sell seed by direct message is often a scammer.
Where should you go for seeds?
Contact the seed breeder through their official social media account or check out their website. Look for a newsletter signup because many breeders do "seed drops" via email only. Another option is to ask a person who's growing their strains where they got the genetics.

- Low Stress Training (LST) Tutorial - Giving 2-3 inches of space around a cola will ensure that it's getting enough light. If your grow light is strong enough, this will eliminate any larfy bud that would normally develop as a result of overcrowding. More density!
-
-
Nebula’s Easy Manifold (Cannabis “Main-Lining” Tutorial) - Assuming you have a proper light, one of the best ways to get dense bud is to have less bud. I know it sounds weird, but one of the most common ways people get larfy bud is by allowing too many colas to grow and compete for space and light.
- Complete Guide to Cannabis Plant Training - As you've already seen, plant training has a lot to offer if you're trying to grow dense bud. Additionally, plant training will make sure you harvest more of your dense bud in exchange for a little care. It's free real estate.
