Issue #499 - Sunday, November 7, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Do you need to give your plants nutrients every time you feed them? It sounds simple enough, but unfortunately, it's a question that gets skipped over to the detriment of newer growers. Today, we'll give you both points of view and our honest opinion on what you should do with your cannabis plants.
- Have you ever tried growing multiple different strains at the same time? I love harvesting a variety of strains, but growing multiple genetics can cause unexpected challenges. Learn how to minimize problems and maximize results!
- Get an update on my auto-flowering grow journal (plus the update I forgot last week). One tent got topped today, so the real experiment begins!
- Seed bank updates: Get the full details below!
- Many outdoor growers have something in common: they love growing plants that are as tall as themselves! In this week's "Trophy Pics of the Week", the plants are all tall enough to ride all the rollercoasters at your local Six Flags theme park. Also, I'm sure they're great to have on rides.

Should I Give Nutrients with
Every Watering?
🌳➕💊 👩⚕️
|
|
Is it a good idea to give nutrients to your cannabis plants every watering? Is it better to give nutrients every other watering?
There are many different schools of thought on the “best” way to grow cannabis. In fact, there are almost as many ways to grow weed as there are growers. In my opinion, the way to grow is the way that you enjoy and get the results you want. And that’s going to be true when it comes to cannabis watering practices, too.
But what is the “best” way to water? After experimenting with many different nutrients and watering schedules, I’ve come to realize that there are some “standards” of growing weed that just don’t live up to the scrutiny.
What do I mean? When I started growing marijuana, I was always taught that the best way to water plants is...
Growing Different Strains Together
|
|
Grow multiple different strains at once if you want more variety after harvest
|
Many indoor cannabis growers want to grow multiple strains together so that they have a greater variety of bud to choose from after harvest. Additionally, maximizing your grow space by growing many plants can increase overall marijuana yields.
Pros
- Greater variety of strains after harvest
- Growing many plants can increase yields
Cons
- May take more time and effort to care for plants with differing needs
- More likely to run into space or height issues if not paying attention
- Plants may be ready to harvest at different times
You get more bud variety if you grow multiple strains at once, but it can get overwhelming
Luckily, good planning goes a long way. With a little plant training and the right genetics, you can grow multiple strains in a remarkably small space.
Auto-Flowering Grow Journal: Week 3
|
|
Both tents at week 3. I’m pretty pleased how closely matched the plants are at this point.
|
Here's is a link to last week's update (which I forgot) where I transplanted the seedlings to their final plant containers.
Today was 3 weeks from the day sprouted seeds went in Rapid Rooters.
Here were the two tents at the beginning of the day
Tent 1 – Left alone completely
Untrained (these plants will be left alone until harvest except to get water). This is the "control group".
Tent 2 – Topped and leaves tucked
I cut off the top of the plants in tent 2 and tucked some of their top leaves to help expose the lower stems to light.
I cut this much off the top of plants in tent 2. It seems like such a small difference now, but I’m captivated to see how much this affects plant growth
Tent 2 after plants were topped and leaves tucked.
Oh boy! Will the tents look different by next week? Will the plants start flowering before the next update? Stay tuned!
Mutant Plant! (Petiole on Steroids)
|
The main stem of this plant split into two leaves, like it had topped itself. Then I noticed a new stem growing directly out of a leaf petiole (a “petiole” is the stem that connects a leaf to the plant). Never seen that before!
|
This is a week later. The new stem appears to be growing normally.
However, the growing branch from below the split is “whirled” (spinning) with multiple leaves and branches emerging from the same spot.
Seed Banks... This week's updates!
|
|
Sometimes good things disappear
|
If you've been reading the last few newsletters, you may know we've been investigating recent changes by seed banks. Here's what we found out this week.
Seedsman - Avoid for now
- The long-time trusty seed vendor Seedsman has recently gone through major changes including an updated website and logo.
- Something seemed off. We reached out for recent reports of their service.
- The feedback is unanimous. Their recent service has been BAD. Long waits before seeds even ship (over a month for some) and seeds are now arriving from Europe (seeds had been shipping from within the US to US customers).
- I recommend avoiding them for now. I'll update as I learn more.
- We continue to get great feedback about their service.
- However, some of you have mentioned they have a small selection of non-American genetics.
- Also, unfortunately, we learned they only ship to the USA for now :(
Herbies is a possible new contender for our seeds list. Why?
- Big selection of non-American genetics from multiple well-known breeders
- Also includes American genetics
- Ships worldwide (here's their countries list) including Canada, Europe, and Australia. A reader wrote in to recommend them for Canadian growers.
- I've ordered from them in the past and had a great experience, but haven't ordered recently.
So I need your help! What do you think of Herbies? Have you had any recent experiences, good or bad? Please reply to this email with any feedback. I'll be making an order, too.

"First off I love your website! I'm a novice grower and your website has been a godsend very informative so very helpful !! Thank you👍
However (I'm just throwing this out there) in the unfortunate event of a zombie apocalypse or some other tragic event that would prevent us from using cell phones, computers, internet etc. I believe your wealth of knowledge should be offered in hard print!! ... you know, a book maybe even a picture or two. Sign me up, I'll pre-order 2 copies right now in case I misplace one"

Nothing like the sweet, stanky smell of a successful cannabis harvest. Congrats, buddy! ~Sirius
"I found your web site early last year. I just want to thank you and Sirius especially with his bubbleponics tutorial. I grew two nice Acapulco Gold plants last year; and this year I'm trying some auto flowering plants, which are doing extremely well. Thank you both for the info. I'll send some
pics later on."

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Don't fall for this common trap
Don't let seed scammers take your money!
Has an unknown social media account offered to sell you seeds? Beware! Legitimate seed companies and breeders wait for you to contact them. Someone who contacts you first to sell seeds (especially by direct message) is often a scammer.
Where should you go for seeds?
Contact the seed breeder through their social media account or check out their website. Look for a newsletter signup because many breeders sell seeds via email. Another option is to ask a trusted grower where they got the genetics. Otherwise, here's our current list.

- Is This Nutrient Burn on My Marijuana Plant? - Ah, nutrient burn. The annoying problem that all growers deal with at some point. The cool thing about nutrient burn is that it can be stopped, and it doesn't pose a massive threat to your plant or yields. Easy-to-solve problems are the best kind to have, right?
-
Which Nutrients Are Best For Growing Cannabis? - Many growers get caught up trying to select nutrients from the dozens (if not hundreds) of nutrient companies that have sprung up almost overnight. Luckily, it's far more straightforward than it seems, and many of them will work fine. See this article for more info!

Solventless Extraction Showdown – Bubble Hash vs. Dry-Ice Hash! - Bubble hash is excellent stuff, but so is dry-ice hash. We could enjoy them on their own peacefully, or we could make them duke it out to see which one is supreme. This is just an opinion, so you're not necessarily wrong if you disagree with the article above...unless you think
dry-ice hash is better than bubble hash. That would make you wrong.
- Fire Protection: Only You Can Prevent Grow Room Fires! - You know what's cool about LEDs being so more prevalent than they used to be? Fewer growers are burning their houses down. Hooray for that! Still, it's wise to stay on the safe side when it comes to fire, especially since many LEDs are not FCC/UL
listed.
