Issue #504 - Sunday, December 12, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- The weather outside is frightful, but the weed you're growing is delightful. And if you want to harvest bud that's bold, you gotta help your weed deal with the cold. Seriously though, having a good plan to deal with the cold can turn a potential bud disaster into an easy, colorful harvest!
- Get a list of cold-resistant cannabis strains. These genetics can handle the cold! Despite what their mom says, they don't even need a coat.
- Do you hate holiday shopping but still want to give cool gifts? If so, you're in luck because I put together a list of 50+ fun cannabis gift ideas for the weed lover in your life!
- Week 8 autoflowering grow journal update with pictures! It's been 8 weeks since germination and buds are fattening nicely. I think they will be ready to harvest around New Years!
- I don't know if it's appropriate to refer to this week's "Trophy Pics of the Week" as "freaks", but I think it may be the most accurate description. We have actual freak cannabis plants as well as an auto that can only be described as a juggernaut. Also, why hasn't anyone bred a strain of giant autos and called them "Juggernautos"?

Cold Climate and
Winter Cannabis Growing Tips
❄🥶🌳👍
|
|
Temperatures are dropping in many parts of the world and unfortunately, cannabis plants don’t like the cold. In fact, most cannabis strains grow significantly slower once the temperature gets under 60°F (15°C), and freezing temperatures can cause major injury or even plant
death.
This cannabis plant is happy to be inside out of the cold weather
Cannabis plants thrive in the winter as long as you protect them from the cold
Keep roots warm and up off the cold floor
A plant growing outdoors is often more resistant to cold than indoor plants. Part of that resistance comes from the fact that their roots don’t experience big temperature fluctuations. Cannabis plants don’t like “cold feet”.
But you can capture that power indoors, too. For example, if you’re growing in a basement or garage, it’s common for the floor to be cold. In that case, put your plants on a tray or some other barrier to prevent roots from sitting directly on the floor.
Plants are droopy and sad when their roots get chilly. Keep the plant container off the ground when growing in a cellar or other space that has a cold floor.
Be prepared for a power outage
One challenge for growers in wintry climates is the impending chance of their electricity going out during the winter months. Indoor growers rely on electricity to keep plants alive, especially in the winter, so it’s a good idea to prepare ahead of time...

One advantage of the cold is it can bring out colors like purple and pink
Some cannabis strains can handle the cold much better than other strains. If possible, it helps to pick a cold-resistant strain if you know that your grow area may experience chilly temperatures on a regular basis.
Recommended cold-resistant photoperiod strains
Recommended auto-flowering strains for the cold
This Blueberry x Mazar Auto dealt with both extremely hot and cold temperatures (it was a rough grow) yet still produced an excellent harvest!

Looking for good gifts for a fellow grower?

2021 has been a roller coaster. No one needs the stress of picking out gifts for the holidays. It can be hard picking out the perfect present… unless the person is interested in weed!
Get ideas on how to make a cheap weed gift basket. These have a lot of "wow factor" but won't break the bank
This saxophone pipe made me laugh out loud
A Smoke Buddy is like a professional sploofy. Blow into it to scrub the smell of smoke from the air!
Need a last minute gift? Don't have time or money, but some extra weed? Put an 1/8 in a baggie and write “Happy Holidays!” on it with permanent marker. To this day I am still happy to get new free weed as a gift :)

Pretty impressed with the ES300 LED grow light. The gap in the middle helps accommodate plants that grow too close. Despite being only inches away, the top of the plant still has green leaves. That main bud is going to get fat!
|
Hitting the home stretch! The buds all got bigger this week, but other than that I didn’t notice many changes.
Untrained tent (these autoflowering plants receive water but have otherwise been left completely alone).
Trained autoflowering tent (these are the same strains as above, but they were topped and bent into a flat canopy)
The buds will continue to fatten and mature over the next few weeks and I expect these will be ready to harvest around the New Year. Stay tuned!

"Would love to see the defoliate / don't defoliate comparison. Thanks guys, love all that you do! "
~Ryan
Defoliation vs. Non-defoliation was by far the most popular topics recommended. It looks like that might be the next test. 👩🔬~Sirius

"Thanks for the news letter. I still make tons of mistakes but now I can identify how I screwed up after the fact."
~Robert
Learning from mistakes is on of the best lessons you can get in any hobby. If we've helped you in that area, I'm proud! ~Sirius
"What's up nebirrus fourhaze ( see what I did there?) It's Rob here, I'd love to see a defol vs. No defol. Please. For the record, I'm a defoller all the way!!!! Get dem leafs gone!! Anyway keep doing what you are doing. The world needs more peeps like you 😊

"These are both pictures from Freakshow from Humboldt. She was came out with one cotyledon black(dead). She grew 2 more of them adjacent to the originals almost like a survival instinct. She grew short and she was topped several times and I pulled 4 clones from her. She has roughly 16 colas now."
~EvenSteven
What a beautiful specimen! I've seen quite a bit of Freakshow and I'm still just as excited to see it every time. I love the shape of the forming buds. ~Sirius

You've manifolded your plant and managed to keep it at 8 colas...bravo! I know from experience that it's painful to remove extra colas when they look healthy. ~Sirius
~Grow_shop_girl
More beautiful examples of Freakshow. I think this might be a sign that we need to grow some of this strain... 🤔 ~Sirius
"Mimosa lemon auto at 10 weeks."
~Mark
That plant is big for an auto and it's big for a 10-week-old plant. We have a couple of autos behaving just like yours and I'm sure they're going to yield well. So, condolences and congrats at the same time! ~Sirius

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Don't fall for it!
Scammers, scammers, everywhere...
Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send fake seeds (or nothing).

We got this alarming email: "This is supposed to be Auto Bubble. 4 weeks in from seed. What is the deal? What is this plant?"
Unfortunately, this is not an actual weed plant. The reader got fake seeds. Don't let this happen to you!
