Issue #506 - Sunday, December 26, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- How do you start growing indoors? It's kinda like building a computer from parts. It seems super complicated and it's hard to know where to start, but with a simple set of instructions, it turns into a laughably easy task. Similarly, today's article will have you laughing at how easy it is to get set up once you know what you're doing.
- Many indoor growers are trying to keep their garden on the down-low. If you're trying to keep your plants a secret, you likely want to know how to grow small plants that still produce a lot of weed. This week I wrote a whole new article with recommended short strains as well as 5 important tips to growing small plants indoors!
- I'm away from my plants right now due to holiday travel (I'm actually writing this on Tuesday) so I don't have an update for my grow journal. My plants are currently being watered automatically via Blumats, so let's hope they look good when I get back next week!
- There are lessons to learn and plants to love in this week's Trophy Pics. If you don't find at least one picture that interests you, I would strongly suggest you keep checking until you feel the power of these plants. At least, that's how I power up on Sundays...

2021 was a crazy year that somehow took forever and flew by at the same time. I don't know if you relate.
Do any of you remember how Y2K was going to shut down the global infrastructure in 2000? Or that the world was supposed to end in 2012 as prophesized by a Mayan Calendar? Yet somehow we're about to reach 2022.
Every New Year, I think about what I plan to do for the year. I don't really make a "resolution" but I do set some goals for myself. I know a lot of people decide to start growing around the beginning of the year. The holidays are over and if you start immediately you can get your first harvest of the year before 4/20.
If any of you are thinking about getting started growing weed next year, I made a new resource just for you!
Ready to start growing your own weed in 2022?
Learn exactly what you need to buy to start growing weed indoors. This covers your grow light, grow tent, fan, and smell filtering. You still need to add your grow medium, nutrients (if any), and seeds.

How do you keep plants short?
Each cannabis plant grows a little different. Some tend to grow tall and thin, while others stay short and bush out. Genetics affects everything from yield, potency, color, and smell of buds.
So if you’re growing in a short space (for example in a stealth setup or if height is limited), you can save yourself a bunch of headaches by starting with a strain that tends to stay short. That gives one less thing for you to worry about.
But in addition to strain, there are tricks you can use to get your plants to grow the size and shape you want.

Defoliation Test Coming Soon!
|
|
This plant was defoliated early in the flowering stage.
|
After that it was left alone. This is the plant just before harvest. Did defoliation cause the huge buds, or was it something else?
Last week I asked you what you want to see with my upcoming grow experiment on defoliation.
Note: Defoliation means to remove leaves. Strategic defoliation is often recommended to get cannabis plants to produce bigger denser buds, but it can hurt yields if done wrong.
I heard you loud and clear. You want to see...
- Test defoliation in coco vs soil
I can't wait. I have a feeling I'm going to be surprised at the results. I'll also test the buds in a lab so we can find out if defoliation affects THC or terpene production. I expect to start this side-by-side in February once I've got my clones ready. Stay posted for more details!

About to leave the babies alone for a few days. Blumat stakes will give water while I'm gone.
|
I'm going on a trip for the holiday so I don't have an update for this week (It's actually Tuesday for me right now so it's only been a few days since the last update). I set up the plants with Blumat
stakes to water them automatically while I'm gone. Luckily they're getting close to harvest and aren't drinking much anymore. Fingers crossed 🤞 the plants still look good when I get back.
Just curious, are any of you interested in learning about Blumats or other ways to automatically water your plants? Reply to this email and let me know! Also, what other problems, if any, do you have with watering?

"Hello, Ms. Nebula and Mr. Sirius,
As always, a fantastic newsletter once again. [...] As for the hash oil, thanks for the head's up on the Source Turbo. I picked one up and have processed several runs from my first grow with outstanding results. Yes, it's not a cheap machine, but the ability to reclaim so much of the alcohol will most likely
pay for itself over a short period of time. Add in the safety factor and ease of operation and it's a winner. Also, thanks for the turn on about the Ardent.
Love the convenience, the lack of turning the house into a reefer plantation smell wise and the easy infusion process. Enhanced olive oil makes for some great salads...
Thank you both for all the super helpful information and positivity you put out there. You obviously love what you do and it shows. I feel like I'm learning more and more each day and I wouldn't be where I'm at on my growing journey without you both.
The only problem with growing weed? So many strains... so kittle time and space.
Peace, love and great growing!"
~Cosmo
I'm glad we've been helpful to your cannabis growing journey. Your email reminded me to make some hash oil, so I literally stopped writing this to get the machine going 😂 ~Sirius

"I tried your manual method of making bubble hash. I thought it worked great. Started with just under 6oz's of trim from my own grows and ended up with just over 11.5 grams of hash. And it's pretty good. Thanks!"
~Tom
Oh jeez...now I have to make some bubble hash, too. Lemme go get my bags 😂 ~Sirius
"Hello Nebula and Sirius, I've used seedsman two times and the only negative was the shipping time. The first time it took 5 weeks and the last which was November of 2020 still took 4 weeks. I just used Seed Supreme from your recommendation and I got the beans in 6 days. Thank you for all of your information.
I'm very successful directly because of you two!"
~Muggs
Good to know both companies worked out for you! I hear Seedsman is moving some of their operations stateside, so I suspect their shipping for the U.S. will get faster in the new year. ~Sirius

"She has a couple stressful memories but I'm thinking she is doing just fine at 6 weeks."
~DBLOCK
At some point, we all have plants with a (more than) a couple of stressful memories. But just like people, the important part is what we do after the stressful events 💪 ~Sirius
P.S. You're doing great; keep it up!

~Sean
It looks like you walked in on 3 plants involved in some illicit activity. I would just slowly back out of the room. 😨 ~Sirius
"I learned how to do this type of growing method from a site called, “GROWWEEDEASY”, they are the very best to learn from."
~Mark
We've seen some of Mark's plants last week, but I couldn't help but include these. I got "inspired" and made a zoom-y picture. ~Sirius
This one is a rollercoaster! I'll let Mr. K narrate his own pictures as I gently hum the Lion King's "Circle of Life" in the background. ~Sirius
"This is what happens when you forget to plug in the pump on the cloner (and not check it for two days). 36 girls gone. S**t..."
After topping/defoliating...
One week later! Super skunk seems to thrive on defoliating (?)
All the bottom branches I cut off (28 plants) got put in the "cycloner""

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Scammers take your money and run!
Let's fight scammers together
Nebula here. I'm typically a pretty easy-going person but something that really gets my goat is scammers. How do people make a living stealing from others? If you feel the same way, here's a 3-minute video on Youtube that shares some quick and easy tips to help shut down scammers that target you.
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).

- 5 Time-Savers for Busy Growers - We've all heard the phrase "Don't rush a good thing". It means that a rushed task usually comes out with lower quality. counterproductive way.

Cannabis Breeding Techniques (Advanced) - I love buying seeds from people who have to do the breeding for me. All I want to do is have seeds with excellent, unique genetics show up at my door so I can grow them. But if you want to be in control of what genetics you have, breeding your own strains is the natural first step.

Fire Protection: Only You Can Prevent Grow Room Fires! - Luckily, grow room fires are becoming less and less of a danger as LEDs have mostly replaced HPS lights in home grows. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
