Issue #507 - Sunday, January 2, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- The "12-12 From Seed" technique is the answer to a simple growing question: What would happen if you flowered a cannabis plant as soon as it sprouted? The cool thing about today's newsletter is that you don't have to find out yourself! We've done the legwork and we'll tell you the pros and cons of using this weird style of growing.
- I have great memories of Maui Wowie, Yukon Gold (anyone know a current source?), and White Widow from the early 2000s. Some strains will stay remembered for a long time because their effects are more than just a THC percentage.
This week, I'd like to briefly introduce you to an underrated strain with effects that have that "timeless" feel. When you find a great strain, hold on to it!
- Check out week 11 of my side-by-side autoflowering grow journal featuring plants that were trained vs the same strains allowed to grow wild. And grow wild they did. These plants are getting heavy with sparkling buds and I anticipate it'll be time to harvest soon!
- This week's trophy pics start with a cautionary tale, but luckily, you can learn about it from the comfort of your own cozy home. After that, it's just a bunch of good ol' cannabis plants doing what they do best: making lots of weed and increasing my Sunday happiness. Happy first Sunday of the New Year!

Is 12-12 From Seed Worth It?

Will the “12/12 from seed” cannabis growing technique give you huge yields? In a word, no… but there are benefits to initiating the flowering stage as soon as possible. Giving a 12/12 light schedule from seed
germination is a great way to create tiny “bud stick” cannabis plants, which may be perfect for a small stealthy marijuana garden. When modified slightly, the same basic technique can create bigger plants and bigger yields while adding little to no extra time before harvest. And then there is the matter of genetics. Certain strains give better results than others.
This creates small “bud stick” plants that are typically ready to harvest in 3-4 months. Check out this beautiful example of “12/12 from seed” by Fuel.
If you haven’t heard this term before, “12/12 from seed” means giving your cannabis seedling 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark each day from the moment of germination. Providing a 12/12 light schedule initiates the flowering stage and causes
cannabis plants to start making buds. The idea of this technique is to get seedlings to start flowering as quickly as possible to reduce the time to harvest. Once a plant has started flowering, most strains are ready to harvest within 12 weeks. The sooner you get a plant to start flowering, the sooner you get to harvest.
There’s just one major problem… 12/12 from seed often causes stunted growth and small yields. This results in yields that are often less than 1 ounce per plant, even under strong grow lights.
This seedling took nearly 4 months from seed to harvest under about 150W of fluorescent lights and yielded only 1/2 of an ounce.
I think it looks kind of cool, but 1/2 ounces is not a great harvest after waiting so long. I’ve found you can tweak the light schedule to double or triple your total yield per plant without necessarily increasing time-to-harvest or plant
height. More on that below!
You got the general idea of what to expect when using "12-12 from seed", but we have even more helpful information!

Can you feel it pulling you in?
The picture below is one the earliest examples of Critical Kush (by Barney's Farm) plants I've grown. I would tell you about how great it is, but I have a feeling that you can tell I'm a fan by these two gifs I made just for this newsletter 😂
Trust me, Critical Kush is a double-gif-worthy strain.

Auto-Flowering Grow Journal: Week 11

The Sour Diesel Auto plant (pictured above) that I allowed to grow wild got soooo tall, but it looks like it's going to reward me for the trouble with huge yields!
|
Here's a picture of the untrained tent (that Sour Diesel is the enormously tall plant on the far right)
Now the trained tent (same autoflowering strains in the same order, but these ones were topped and trained to stay short). What a difference!
I'm actually kind of curious which tent is going to yield more. The trained plants are little bud balls (much higher bud-to-plant-size ratio), but the two outer plants in the untrained tent have so many loooong buds I think their sheer size may give their tent the win
for yields.
My other big question is how their THC and terpene percentages will compare after getting the buds tested in the lab. The trained tent with the smaller plants seems like it smells much stronger and buds may be sparklier, but I've found over the years that it's a crapshoot to guess THC or terpenes (smell) before the results come back.
It would be interesting if the tents ended up having significantly different lab results because that would indicate topping and training plants in the vegetative stage has an effect on bud quality in the flowering stage. I've heard growers theorize about the effects of early stress on bud potency, but how crazy would it be to get lab results with objective evidence?
Getting close. I may have harvest pictures for you next week, but if not it will definitely be the following week. I’m also germinating seeds today in preparation for my upcoming side-by-side grow that tests the effects of flowering stage defoliation on plant yields and growth. Stay tuned 🙂

"Bless you guys, you do good work online. I'm a pollen chucker and reader. Thanks for following your bliss and setting an example for me!"
~Trey
Thanks, Trey. That's very much appreciated. That being said...
I read "pollen chucker" and instinctively went to reassure my plants that I would never let pollen touch them. ~Sirius

"I just wanted to share this information. I noticed one of my plants had some drooping leaves that were turning pinkish red. After further investigation i found Brown Stink bugs feeding on the main stem that all of the effected growth was happening on. I figured this could be helpful to add to the website as information and symptoms of the stink bugs are limited. As
none of the other plants were showing signs or had bugs."
~NitroGrower
I appreciate you sharing this with us all. Showing off a good looking plant is much easier than putting your bad times on display so others can learn. Also the red plant is weirdly beautiful despite the cause. 🏆 ~Sirius

"Happy frog 7 months outside increased yields 6 fold"
~Chud
No joke, those outdoor plants can get big enough to drive off with your car. Be careful not to ignore car alarms until those plants are harvested. ~Sirius
"Ground control from Major Stamen, do you read me Sirius Fourside?
On 1/1/22 she will be 8 weeks, and EXPLODING with life!
I am now watching trichomes and just as Nebula Haze, I like 20-30% Amber . Thank you both for the nuggets to make this happen, “gold nuggets”. HAPPY NEW YEAR."
~Major Stamen (formerly Mark)
Happy new year and good job, Major Stamen. Definitely let us know how the harvest goes! ⚖ ~Sirius

Don't Let Scammers Steal Your Money!
|
|
Yoink!
Scammers stink.
Sirius here. Although I can't verify if scammers actually smell bad, one thing I know for sure is that they stink at being decent human beings. Honestly, it hurts to see good people get scammed out of their hard-earned money when all they want is a few seeds to grow. Please be wary when approached by people trying to sell you something online, especially on Instagram and Facebook. The thought of a scammer stealing from our people is infuriating!
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).

How to Prepare for the Flowering Stretch - When your plant reaches a certain age, there's a chance it can do a crazy stretch which can double its height. This stretch can totally ruin your plans of achieving an orderly grow. Luckily, if you know about the stretch in advance, you can be ready for it and even use it to your advantage.

- Sea of Green (SoG) Tutorial - If you're thinking about doing 12-12 because you want to grow a ton of weed quickly, Sea of Green is the method you're really looking for. The strength of the Sea of Green technique lies in the fact that filling a grow tent with plants happens faster when you start with many plants instead of one.
