Issue #500 - Sunday, November 14, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
Wow it's Issue 500! We've been doing this newsletter non-stop for 500 weeks. Pretty cool!
In today's issue...
- Over the years, we've had hundreds of growers ask for our help with plant problems. Many of those problems were nutrient deficiencies...or that's what we thought! Many problems that look like deficiencies are actually pH problems and today, we're going to show you how to tell the difference.
- Today's article was about pH but I also made a quick text guide to some of the most common cannabis plant problems. The idea is to make it quicker and easier to diagnose your sick plants. It's still the beta and I'd love your feedback!
- How do you grow small cannabis plants in tiny spaces? Check out this tutorial classic!
- Check out the latest update to my auto-flowering grow journal! You'll see how 4 auto-flowering plants reacted to being topped vs their siblings that were untouched. I'm a little surprised at how they've responded so far!
- This week, there are a couple more trophy pictures than we normally include. We didn't have much of a choice as we were bombarded with dozens of pictures of beautiful cannabis plants. If anything, you should blame the people sending in all these awesome pics!

Which Nutrient Deficiencies are
Caused by pH? (picture guide) 📸

Cannabis nutrient deficiencies are the worst. Well, maybe not the worst, but I feel a twinge of pain when I check on my plants (all hopeful and excited) only to see yellowing, brown spots, unhealthy leaves, or other plant problems. Talk about a bummer way to start a day.
This cannabis plant was green and happy just a few days before this picture. What caused the nutrient deficiency?
Discolored cannabis leaves can be the results of watering problems, environmental problems, bugs, and more, but today’s article is going to address the most common and the most misunderstood cannabis problem: the nutrient deficiency caused by pH.
There are many reasons cannabis leaves get what appear to be nutrient deficiencies:
- Not enough nutrients – The plant used up all the nutrients in the soil or just isn’t getting enough. This is a nutrient deficiency in the purest sense.
- Too many nutrients or supplements – It may seem counterintuitive but nutrient overload causes burnt tips and dark green leaves that are sometimes mistaken for a deficiency..
- Mixing non-compatible nutrients or supplements – Always try to get all nutrients and supplements from the same company to reduce the chance of interactions
- Watering problems – Most commonly overwatering but sometimes underwatering
- Heat or cold – Extreme heat or cold can cause symptoms that look just like nutrient deficiencies (learn more about temperature and cannabis)
- Too much light – When a grow light is too close, it causes light stress, which is often mistaken for a nutrient deficiency.
- High or low pH (acidity) at the roots <– Today’s article!
High or Low PH Causes Most Nutrient Deficiencies
Cannabis plants need a slightly acidic root environment in order to absorb nutrients...

When diagnosing a sick plant, it helps to narrow down your options. That's the purpose of our interactive plant doctor tool.
However, I wanted to make a chart that could be printed for easy reference so I created a guide this week.
What do you think? I would love to hear your feedback, suggestions, or requests to make it even better. Hit the reply button and let me know!

Auto-Flowering Grow Journal: Week 4
|

Week 4 - Topped tent on left. Untouched tent on right.
|
Plants are growing fast! They’ve really picked up in speed over the last few days. The topped plants (tent on left) seem like they possibly were a tiny bit stunted from their topping
a week ago, but I’m not certain. It’s possible that it seems that way because they’re growing multiple branches, which means the plants energy is split more ways. The untrained plants only have one main stem and are getting tall quickly.
Here’s another view. The top plants were topped and branches bent down to maintain a flat canopy. The plants from the untouched tent have been getting water and that’s it (no training whatsoever).
The topped plants are certainly wider, while the untouched plants are taller. It’s hard to know what will happen next.
A leaf from the Sour Diesel plant I removed today from the topped tent (it was blocking a bud site)
This week didn’t produce a whole lot of changes that you can see in pictures, but their underlying structure is very different. I’m curious to see how they progress now that the plants in the topped tent have so many main branches compared to the untapped plants. Will
the topped plants tend to stay short overall, or will they catch up in height?
We'll find out next week.
Seed Banks... This week's updates!
|
|
Nirvana on their way to the US (in my imagination)
|
Nirvana Seeds
We learned this week that long-time seed seller Nirvana recently moved to the United States, like many of other seed banks from Europe. They also majorly jacked up their prices (they used to be known for low prices). I used to order from Nirvana but was once extremely disappointed with the bud quality from their free "mystery seeds". However, we had a reader write in a few
weeks ago saying they've had good experiences with them over the last few years.
I'm curious, have any of you had recent experiences with Nirvana Seeds? Anyone ordered off their new website yet?
Last week I asked you all about Herbies Seeds. There was an overwhelming consensus... you all LOVE Herbies. We received dozens of compliments about their service, and no complaints.
Therefore, I feel like we can whole-heartedly recommend Herbies to our readers (especially for growers outside the US since they can't order from Seed Supreme yet).
- Ships from Europe (seemingly out of Spain)
- Big selection of non-American genetics from multiple well-known breeders
- Also includes American genetics
- Ships worldwide (here's their countries list with estimated shipping times) including Canada, Europe, and Australia.
However, we're still taking feedback! Please don't hesitate to reply to this email and let us know anything you have to say about Herbies, Nirvana, or any seed bank whatsoever. Let's pool our knowledge and experience
to improve things for everyone!

"Hello I'm William and happy growing! I cannot thank you enough for teaching me to grow amazing medicine! I'm always referring to your website with problems or anything since there is so much great knowledge. As for Herbies seeds I had no problem ordering or receiving, however 5 of the glue
berries didn't pop but other strains did well. I recommend them.
Thank you Nebula and Sirius!!"
~Muggs
I'm glad we can help. If five of your seeds didn't pop, I would definitely reach out to Herbies. In fact, I recommend that for any seedbank. 👍 ~Sirius

No, thank YOU! 🏆 ~Sirius
"I love your website and look forward to Sunday mornings. GWE is my go to site and GWE has helped me with my grows and I appreciate the wealth of info it provides."

"Around 4 or 5 weeks. Maui Waui and Ak-48 seeds made in July"
~Farmer Dave
The angle on that first picture is so weird...and I love it! 💖 ~Sirius

"So beautiful when on plant. After harvest completely different look. Darker buds loss smell. Trying to cure now."
~Allen
That can happen, but just stick to the cure and you'll be good. Also, they look fantastic. 🏆 ~Sirius
Look at those sticky fingers! I bet his hands test at 14% THC right now 😂

Sending pictures of your cat is just plain cheating. Or is it bribery? It's the one where I bend the rules because of kitties. ~Sirius
Uh oh...I smell a possible kitty-jailbreak. 🙀
"ILGM Chocolope, 6 weeks old at flip (48hr dark period followed by 11/13). Topped once, lst began and stem split immediately after light came on after dark period. 3 weeks from harvest. Spider farmer sf 2000 led grow light and 2x4. HVAC upgraded, shared system with 3x3 flower tent, AC
infinity. Daytime temps 77-87, night as low as 69 but rarely below 71. Bergman's complete, tribus, silica and signal for nutrients. Work okay, definitely sticking with jacks 321 in future. Bang for buck."
~Kek
The way you took these pictures makes me feel like I got a real close-up look in your grow tent. Well done on all accounts 👍 ~Sirius
Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Don't fall for common seed scams
Spread the word!
Watch out for seed scams. Avoid ordering seeds from an unknown website or a social media account. Too many people will take your money and run!
Where should you go for seeds?
If there's a particular strain you want, contact the seed breeder through their official social media account or check out their website. Look for a contact form or newsletter signup because many breeders sell seeds via email. Another option is to ask a trusted grower where they got the genetics. Otherwise, here's our
current list.

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
