Issue #502 - Sunday, November 28, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Are you in dire need of a way to control an unruly cannabis plant? Sometimes, low-stress training just won't do and you need an extra-strength solution for cannabis that does whatever it wants. That's when supercropping comes in. If training your plant is an argument, supercropping is the final word!
- What's the best autoflowering strain for yields? There's one that grows far bigger buds than any other autoflowering strain I've ever grown (by far). What about the highest potency? You may be surprised!
- Check out the week 6 update to my Untrained vs Topped autoflowering grow journal! I wrote today's article because I had to supercrop two autoflowering plants this week. You will not believe how much some of my autoflowering plants have grown in the last 7 days!
- What grow experiment should I do next? I asked for your opinion last week and two choices got the overwhelming majority of votes. Will you vote to break the tie?
- I was looking through some great trophy pics when suddenly I came to and all the pictures were already picked out and posted on the newsletter. Did I go into a trophy picture trance? Was I nefariously knocked out by a grower who's trying to get into the trophy pics? Was it magic? Did I forget picking them out and posting them? All of these scenarios are equally likely.

Supercropping:
A Magical Technique to Control
Cannabis Plant Height
🌱⚡🧙♀️🌳
|

How Does “Supercropping” Control Tall Cannabis Plants?
Supercropping is a specialized bending technique that is used to control the height and shape of out-of-control cannabis plants by bending branches at major angles. The supercropping technique lets you make bends that otherwise wouldn’t be possible without breaking the branch.
This autoflowering cannabis plant was growing too tall for its grow space. I supercropped the branches at right angles to keep the plant short. As a bonus, this wide and flat table shape maximizes yields by allowing more parts of the plant to be close to the grow light.
Supercropping is used to bend branches at big angles even after the branches have become stiff. There is a specific technique that must be used to prevent branches from breaking (outlined today).
Instant height control!
After today, you'll be able to bend marijuana stems (even hardened or woody branches) without causing them to split or break
Autoflowering Strains for Yields or Potency
|
I received questions this week about autoflowering strains. Are they are potent as photoperiod strains? What about yields?
There are so many autoflowering strains it's hard to generalize, but here are my top picks for yields or potency of the strains I’ve grown.
|
Highest potency
- Cinderella Jack Auto by Dutch Passion – These buds tested at over 22% THC in the lab and the bud effects were excellent. A fan favorite.
A Cinderella Jack Auto plant I grew just before harvest.
Highest yields
- Ultimate Auto by Dutch Passion – This strain consistently produces 2-3x the amount of bud of most other auto-flowering strains in the same conditions. The buds tested at just under 15% THC in the lab, so it wasn’t the most potent, but buds are consistently smooth with classic relaxing effects that remind me of weed from the
2000s.
It’s the only autoflowering strain I’ve seen produce buds like this under a 300W grow light
Ultimate Auto buds are big and dense

Auto-Flowering Grow Journal: Week 6
|
|
This week plant growth was absolutely explosive. The plants in the untrained tent are much bigger than the plants in the other tent, but their buds are only just starting to form. They're also drinking more than twice as much!
Untrained tent at week 6. The two outer plants are over 3 feet tall! (about 1 meter) if you count their main bud
The other tent had some tall plants that got supercropped.
Topped tent at week 6. Notice how the two right plants are starting to get taller than the rest. An easy fix with plant training.
After a supercropping session, the canopy is more even with fewer stretchy branches
Well I know I can't wait to see what happens next! I have a feeling that things are going to be crazy next week.

This was one set of clones from a side-by-side grow journal featuring super soil (left) vs coco (right)
|
Last week I asked and now it's time for the runoff vote of the two most popular choices!
What do you want to see me test in my next grow journal?
- Pot size comparison: Grow clones in a solo cup, 1-gallon, 3-gallon and 5-gallon pots. How much of a difference will pot size make when everything else is equal?
- Defoliation experiment: Test defoliation in the flowering stage vs letting plants grow naturally.
Respond to this email and let us know which topic you're most interested in! I'll share the results next week.
Love,
Nebula
Would you like to see a comparison of clones grown in different size pots?
Or would you like to see how flowering stage defoliation affects yields and overall plant growth?

Recommended Cannabis Seed Sources
These sources have gotten great reviews from our readers lately:
- Seed Supreme – California, United States
- ILGM (I Love Growing Marijuana) – California, United States
- Herbies Seeds – Europe (seemingly out of the UK and Spain)
- We're still looking for a consistent Canadian Seed Bank. We've gotten a few suggestions but unfortunately they've also gotten bad reviews from other growers.

"Cheese auto, This strain handles powerful lights like a champ and grows well in mid to high temps up to 85°f. Plant it in the pot you want to keep it in throughout the grow. Wider the better. 22hrs of light with 1/2 hour dark every 5hrs 30min.24hrs of light can be used throughout the grow but I haven't noticed a difference in quality or yield. It is very important to avoid shocking/stunting this strain. It is very unlikely the plant with recover in time to
produce a proper crop. Do your homework ;)"
~Gamer guy
I'm triggered by the phrase "do your homework". I have an automatic reaction that makes me yell "No, you do it!" even if it's good advice 😂~Sirius

"I thought you guys might like to see this. Here’s a few pics of a nug of the Mimosa x Orange Punch you featured in the newsletter. I wish I had a better camera to show you how good it really looks! I’ve grown some good bud before but this is definitely up there, highly recommend it! Beautiful smell and taste and really packs a punch after just a few hits!"

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
You have to be careful who you trust online!
Unfortunately, seed scams are everywhere
Readers have recently been reporting text message scams. If a "bank" texts you about an unknown transaction, it is almost certainly a scam.
The most popular scammers are random accounts that message you out of no where on social media. If this happens, be extra careful.
If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always double-check who you're giving your money to, and avoid getting caught up in seed scams or other scams.
