Issue #503 - Sunday, December 5, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- You've probably heard that you can increase yields simply by adding CO2 to your growing environment. But is it really that easy? In short, no. But we can show you how to use CO2 with your cannabis the right way so you know it's actually worth the time, money and effort!
- Did you know you can make pure cannabis hash oil at home? This ultra-concentrated form of cannabis can be smoked or eaten directly!
- Have you ever grown a plant as tall as you? Honestly, I never have... until this week! Check out this week's surprising grow journal update, plus check out bright purple hairs growing on the Critical Purple Auto buds!
- If you've been a newsletter subscriber for a few months, you may remember the drama as multiple seed companies went through big changes at once. There was speculation that the long-time recommended Seedsman was sold to a new owner. Today, Seedsman speaks out! Hear what Tom (co-founder of Seedsman) has to say in his own words!
- The trophy pics this week are great, as is the norm. What's really cool though, is that two of the three sets of plants have crazy stems. What do we mean by "crazy stems"? Luckily, it's easy and fun to figure out the answer... just scroll down and enjoy!

How to Use CO2 to Increase
Cannabis Yields

Introduction: How to Use CO2 For Growing Cannabis
Supplementing your plants with extra CO2 can increase your yields and growth by up to 20%, but what’s the best way for a cannabis grower to use CO2? There’s the right way and the wrong way to use CO2, and unfortunately, a lot of people use CO2 in the wrong way and don’t get any of the benefits.
This cannabis grower uses CO2 injection to increase yields
Cannabis Plants Need CO2 or they Can't “Eat”
CO2 (short for “Carbon Dioxide”) is an odorless gas in the air you’re breathing right now.
CO2 in the air is essential to life on earth
Cannabis plants need CO2 to make energy from light via photosynthesis. Without enough CO2 in the air, plants will “starve” and die because they can’t make energy. Luckily, fresh air naturally contains more than enough CO2 to keep plants alive.
With low-powered grow lights (like CFLs, T5s, or small LEDs) your plant can already “digest” all the light at natural CO2 levels. If your plant doesn’t need more CO2, it won’t help much to add more.
But with powerful grow lights (especially HPS), CO2 levels may drop enough to limit photosynthesis. In other words, some of the light goes to waste. In that case, extra CO2 helps plants produce more energy with the same amount of light, resulting in faster growth and bigger buds. As an added bonus, this environment makes plants more resistant to heat, low humidity, and light stress.
But is CO2 enrichment right for your setup?

Auto-Flowering Grow Journal: Week 7
|
|
Did any of the plants go crazy this week? Yes. Yes, they did. The untrained tent now contains the biggest indoor plant I’ve ever grown.
Untrained tent (these autoflowering plants receive water but have otherwise been left completely alone). Wow! That Sour Diesel Auto plant on the right is almost as tall as me!
Here’s a view from the top. From what I can see so far, it looks like the Sweet Grapes Auto plant on the left is going to yield quite a bit
It is soooooo hard not to prune these plants. I want to cut off so many branches. But I’m holding off for the sake of the experiment.
Here is the grow tent with the topped and trained plants. Much more orderly, and the buds are further along, but plants are less than half the size.
The Sweet Grapes Auto plant on the left is going to be a big producer in this tent, too. Its buds are twice the width of the others.
Which tent will yield more? I am not sure yet. The untrained plants are humongous but have only a few buds per plant compared to about a dozen on each trained plant. The real deciding factor will be how far the buds fatten down into the plants. The
longer the buds end up being, the more likely the big plants will yield more overall.
The two Critical Purple Auto plants are now growing bright purple pistils/hairs. The skunky sweet smell blasts me in the face every time I get close. Click for closeup!
What to Test Next? Defoliation!
|
|
I defoliated these plants and they produced over a pound of weed, but would yields have been even better if I left them alone?
|
What experiment should I do next? Last week I did a runoff vote of the two most popular choices and there was a definitive winner.
How exactly does defoliation affect plant growth? We are going to find out together as I perform my first side-by-side defoliation experiment!

Dear Readers,
GrowWeedEasy.com has recommended Seedsman.com as a trustworthy seed source for almost a decade. However, recently their service was not living up to their great reputation. Rumors were rampant, and people (including GWE) thought that their business was under new management.
Tom is a founder of Seedsman and today, we want to share his story in his own words.
Love,
Nebula

Regarding the Seedsman website upgrade
Dear Growers,
Seedsman is my life's work. I've dedicated my time and energy to this site for almost 20 years, so it was devastating to see it hit so hard by Covid and Brexit. First Covid slowed down mail delivery which led to big delays to orders, and then Brexit turned our entire supply chain upside down.
On top of that, the Seedsman website was in desperate need of an upgrade. It was getting slower over time and we couldn't make the new and big improvements we'd been dreaming about for years. It was time. We knew that migrating such an enormous website onto a new platform was going to be a huge undertaking, but we had no idea what was to come.
Let me be frank. There have been multiple failings in our business over this project. When we released the new version of the website it had broken links and functionality problems. During this transition, our communication and service were not up to our standards. I take full responsibility.
We now have a full team working on the site and are also working with a development agency to get the site to where it should be, learn from customers to make the improvements you want to see, and greatly improve the user experience.
And this upgrade, despite all the growing pains, was not in vain. Seedsman.com is quicker, more secure, and translated into 12 different languages. We also brought in a new payment system with added functionality that is being rolled out. When we open in the US next year we will have PayPal, CashApp, reliable card payment, BillPay, and more. We also have brought back a loyalty program and will be building it out continuously over the coming years.
Regarding our shipping and delivery. We are well aware in the days of Amazon that 2-4 weeks for delivery is poor. We will soon be running warehouses in three different jurisdictions, with different stock in each. It’s a complicated system that is still in progress but will bring a greater selection of seeds to more places with faster shipping.
We pledge to make it right for anyone who has had issues. We’ve tried to be as clear to people as to what is going on on our social media channels, but that is now a whole load harder because Instagram removed our page with 130,000 followers. Possibly due to some complaints.
Lastly, I really understand people’s frustration and disappointment – we can and will always do better. Our customer service team has really suffered from abuse. They've received vile messages because of this. We now have 5-6 full-time customer service staff who are really proficient and keen to help – we just ask that anyone is polite to them, even if they have had some issues. We will take care of you.
Thanks,
Tom

"I'd just like to say that this is the best newsletter I have seen. You guys do a great job. I grow in Southern Ontario Canada. My plants may not be as great as the ones in the pic, but they do the trick. I use your weekly newsletter as my guide. You are excellent and I thank you for your efforts and information."
~Chris
We're glad to help you grow your own bud! ~Sirius

"Hi Nebula!
Just wanted to say, I haven't read everything, but I love your website! I grew my first plant this year and my buds are in the curing stage and are doing very well, thanks to everything I have learned from you. This is great information, easy to read and understand... Thank you and stay safe and be well and many blessings to you and yours!
<3"
~Ingrid
It's satisfying to show people how to do something so helpful, fun and rewarding. Welcome to the hobby! ~Sirius
"I absolutely get so much out of your newsletter! Research! Utter enjoyment in writing about cannabis! I feel you :) I’d be interested in the clones grown in different sizes and subsequent growth and yield. Thank you for all you do. I’ll continue to follow. I grew for first time this year in the northeast - actually did pretty well. Your site was very helpful - my Indica plants suffered due to weather and being outside but the Sativas thrived. I’m still curing
:) being patient. "

"Ever seen knot weed? I'd never seen somebody tie a plant in a knot so I did it and it worked perfectly. Yellow cup is MIA x Rockstar and the Red knot is also Mockstar (MIAxRockstar)or Slymer XX there was a mix-up lol. I won a solo cup contest with the Yellow cup 3 months from germination to harvest pulled exactly 14 grams off it"
~Wizard Of Oz's
I have to admit that I had knot seen anything like this before today. Well done! 🏆~Sirius

"I would just like to thank you guys again for passing on the knowledge and education that you share with us. I try to pay the knowledge forward all the time. I know I've helped three people already get into and started growing. I get some of why you do it. Knowing that you're helping someone be self sufficient is almost up there with smoking hooch itself! Lastly I highly recommend Greenpoint seeds. All six strains I've grown I would put up against a lot out
there, and it'll hold it's own."
~Michael
Not only are you growing your own weed but you're helping others, too? Good on ya! 🙌 ~Sirius
"Indica, Mag Landrace in super soil/coco. Sprouted 9/20/21. 12/12 began 11/12/21. Today, 11/24/21 12 days into 12/12. In your opinion, did it strip the branches too far up to the bud sites? This is my 3rd grow. I understand that I am brutal at bondage , they seem happy. I tore her limbs and taped them up. I was aggressive. I only go to GWE for ALL of my training. I wish you gave tests, and graded us on them. Maybe send out Marijuana Crafters Certificates, I
would shoot for one! Sell them."
~Mark
I'd say you went really aggressive with your training, but the final structure is fantastic. Your grow tent is about to become Cola Country! 🤠🌳~Sirius

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Accounts aren't always who they say they are
Another reader got scammed...
This week a reader wrote in about a seed scam. An Instagram profile that claimed to be Nebula sent them a DM and offered to sell seeds. The reader sent the money via CashApp. The only problem... it wasn't me.
Please, look out for seed scams (way too many scammers these days!), and warn your friends to never buy seeds from an unverified social media account.
