Issue #516 - Sunday, March 6, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Since the dawn of cannabis growing, growers all over the world have been looking for a way to avoid having to water their plants. Luckily, we live in the future and you can force modern technology to do most of the work. Check out today's newsletter to learn how you can get your plants watered while doing next-to-nothing!
- What's getting tested next? Flowering stage defoliation! Does it really increase yields? We'll be finding out soon!
- I accidentally sent the wrong link out for the lab results of my auto-flowering grow journal. I have the actual link for you this week (Oops)!
- If you look at this week's "Trophy Pics of the Week" in the right order, it's like watching a plant slowly grow up in a bunch of locations. Or, if you don't want to use your imagination, you can just look at them and you'll still be pleased all the same. In fact, forget the imagination thing and just look at these cool pictures!

How to Set up an Automatic Watering System for Cannabis Plants
⏲💦🌱➡🌳
|
|
What is an automatic watering system?
An automatic watering system for your cannabis plants is essentially any setup that delivers water to your plants without you having to do it manually. There are essentially two main ways to accomplish automated water (this article goes over both). One is using a gravity-fed system with clay stakes, and the other, which I’ll be going over today, is an automatic drip
irrigation system. Essentially you set up a water pump to automatically give water to your plant roots on a timer. As a result, you can deliver the exact desired amount of water to your cannabis roots for a week or longer without needing any input from you.
Here’s an example of an automatic watering system. I had germinated a bunch of valuable seeds when suddenly I had to leave for an unexpected 7-day trip. I was able to use this system to give water on a schedule and the plants looked beautiful when I got back.
Automatic Drip Irrigation Kit (pump water to plants on a timer)
This tutorial will walk you through setting up this automatic watering system, but the directions apply to nearly all auto-watering systems.
I recommend using this type of system in a grow tent because most come with a water-proof tray at the bottom that can hold many gallons of water if something goes wrong and the pump doesn't turn off. You don't want 5 gallons of water pumped directly onto your carpet because something springs a leak.
What You Need
- Automatic watering kit with a water pump - This kit should contain everything you need to get started including the pump and tubing
- Something to hold water - I used a 5-gallon water jug
- Something to catch extra water - Like plant trays or saucers
- Scissors - Cut the tubing to the size you want
Next Grow on the Way: Defoliation Test
|
|
Does removing leaves in a strategic way actually help plants produce better? Or is it an old wives's tale?
|
Up next: Does Defoliation Increases Yields?
My next grow journal is going to feature two sets of clones grown in identical setups. One set of plants is going to get defoliated in the flowering stage, while the other will be left to grow naturally without removing any leaves.
My theory is that the defoliated plants will end up yielding a higher weight with denser buds, but we'll see how it goes. So far I've been surprised in some way from almost every side-by-side grow experiment I've finished.
The plants featured in today's main article are actually the mom plants for that grow. The strains will be Platinum Cookies, Runtz S1, Pacific Punch, and Blackberry.
This week I will be taking clones off each one via the aerocloner since that typically produces roots in 7-10 days. Are any of you interested in seeing a tutorial on how to use an aeroponic cloner? Reply to this email and let me know if that's something that would interest you.
Next grow will feature several strains including Platinum Cookies! I've always wanted to grow this strain so I'm pretty excited. What's your favorite strain you've grown so far?
Autoflowering Lab Results: Part 2

Check out the averages for each tent! Full lab results below
Oops last week I accidentally linked to the wrong page when I shared the lab results for my recent auto-flowering grow journal. Here's the real link.
See the final update! (includes individual plant weights and links to the complete lab results if you want to sift through the data yourself)
Also, I just want to add I've been smoking the weed from this grow journal and the results are A+ so far. Magnificent.

"Hi. I just wanted to submit a pic of the Mephisto genetics Sour stomper auto I grew. It yielded an amazing 252 grams dry weight. I grew it to 6 nodes and then topped to the forth node. I used velcro straps to low stress train her. I used gh flora duo plus calmag at half streangh through flower. Medium is Mother Earth coco perlite 70/30. Light is hlg 300 r spec. Light schedule 22/2. Germinated December 1, harvested February 9. The first
pic is from Feb 8. The second is after 2 weeks cure. Thanks."
~BastarBaker
You grew an incredible looking plant that produced some impressive looking weed. Well done! ~Sirius

If you feel it's a scam, trust your gut!
"Something doesn't seem right..."
If you've ever watched any of those anti-scammer Youtube videos, you'll know that for some people, the only thing that saves them from a scam is listening to their gut. These lucky folks managed to save themselves from disaster simply by listening to that little voice in their head that told them that something wasn't right. Trust your instincts when they're telling you a scam is going down. If you're wrong about it, it's not a big deal anyway.
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).

How Often Do I Water Indoor Marijuana Plants? - If you're going to water your plants manually, it's extremely important to know how often they need to be watered. Cannabis plants that receive too much or too little water will be upset and they'll definitely show it in their leaves and stature.
-
The Easiest Way to Water Plants & Remove Runoff - This goes along with the last article; it shows you how to water if you're going to do it manually...like a maniac! This page has actionable, specific information on how to water your plants as well as starting amounts for how much water to give them at a time.
- How long can I store nutrient water? - This is excellent information to have in general, but it's even more critical if you're auto-watering since your nutrient water will be sitting around for a bit. If you want to let your nutrients sit around for longer, make sure to pick a brand that isn't made from
organic ingredients.

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
