Issue #519 - Sunday, March 27, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- You can grow a insane strain under a fantastic grow light using good nutrients and it all means nothing when you end up with weed that smells like hay. Why does that hay smell show up and how can we prevent it from happening? Today's article will answer this question and a few others before you even ask them.
- If you haven't started growing weed yet, what's stopping you? You can't say "price" any more because I put together a guide on how to grow weed and produce up to 5 oz in less than 90 days... for only $130 plus seeds!
- If you've been following my current grow journal, we have hit a new milestone. The clones have roots!
- Lush green canopies everywhere! These are plants that you could build a nice tree fort in if you don't mind the smell and stickiness. Also, just to be fair, I have to warn you that there's a graphic picture in the trophy pics. Please skip past the last picture if you are offended by bare root vegetables.

The Secret to Fighting "Hay Smell" When Drying Cannabis
👃🌳👍

The dreaded cannabis “hay smell” after drying marijuana buds has been a thorn in the side of home growers since we first started growing weed. If this happens to you, it’s unbelievably frustrating, especially if you can’t figure out why. What causes marijuana buds to smell “harsh” or like
“fresh cut grass” or “hay” after they’ve been dried?
Why do buds sometimes smell bad like musty hay after being dried?
This often happens to beginner cannabis growers:
- Buds smell good before harvest
- Musty “hay” smell after drying
- Curing buds in jars helps fix the smell
Stop this vicious cycle!
Did you know you can dry buds in the right way and they smell delightful from the moment they’re done drying? At that point, curing buds in jars will enhance the smell further and make buds smooth to smoke, but you don’t have any point where they smell “bad”.
Here is a quick overview of 3 effective ways to dry cannabis buds without hay smell. Then I'll give you the step-by-step instructions.
1.) Air dry in cool space (best)
Keep the temperature under 70°F/20°C while air-drying in a gently ventilated area to produce excellent buds with no hay smell every time. Buds come out perfect after 7-10 days.
2.) Cannabis bud dryer
Cannabis-specific dryer gets good results when used properly in a variety of different environments, but it’s super easy to over-dry your weed if you aren’t careful. They work well even in a warm drying space, but they tend to get worse results in low humidity
3.) Air dry in a cardboard box or paper bag
Drying in a cardboard box (or paper bag) is a great old-school but effective choice to reduce hay smell when you don’t have a cool drying space and can’t get a dryer. Boxes also help buds dry better if you have low humidity.

Clones have roots! – March 21, 2022
Look what I spotted today! It’s been a little over a week since I put these clones in the aerocloner and roots finally started popping out.
I’m going to give them a few more days until they all make roots then move them into coco. After they adjust to their new homes and start growing I’ll pick the two most similar clones between each strain and put one in each tent.

Glad to have you with us over the years, Chris. 🤘 ~Sirius
"I just wanted to thank you. I found after many years (a lot has changed in the last 10 years!) that I was a bit rusty on the good stuff. Went back to soil for my first small grow, built the bubble for my next hydro....I just cant thank you enough! Keep up the great work!"

"This is a plant I've grown to attempt a 2 pound plant. It's in a special RDWC rig i made with everything a lite larger for the larger plant. It was vegged for 2 months, I've been using gas since the second week. I'm using a special (new) mono-silicic acid Silica spray from Bioag. Nutes are just the GH trio. Lights are ChilLED. If I don't reach my target (I don't think it's big enough, but if the buds are very large I might make it) then
I'm gonna reveg. Strain is Gigabud"
~Stltoed
Whether or not you hit two pounds, I'd still say you did a good job based on this picture. 👍 ~Sirius

"Not the best pics. I'll try again with my Sony digital camera to capture the colas properly. I'll look thru old batches of pics too and see what I have."
~Boodles
Funny you should say that, I thought you took great pics. Now I'm curious to see the "good stuff"! ~Sirius
"2 White Widow Auto Plants!! Hydro Grow Well over 3' high and canopy over 4'. This has been my EASIEST grow and will be my most productive. Just getting to the flower mode now. I fimm'ed the plant on the left, the other is natural. These seeds sprouted fast. One was pale yellow after clearing the rockwool. After a few days I gave it light nutrients and bingo...greened right up. First time ever, having to feed a sprout. General Hydropnics
trio, change water every week, Ph 5.5 -6.5 temp 70-78"

They went from a rabbit's snack to a cannabis forest 😂 ~Sirius
"My friend had seeds in his harvest, I told them they must have a male in their garden. Here it is."

I think he has a good idea...
Can't we all just be done with scamming?
True Story: This month, a scammer somehow got a hold of one of our credit cards and tried to buy multiple iPhones at a store in Texas. We have no idea how they got the number or why they didn't think to start smaller, but that's the world we live in. Luckily, everything worked out, plus they actually caught the person (which isn't information you typically get to find out). Stay safe out there and make sure you're only putting your information in places that you
know are absolutely trustworthy. Otherwise, some jerk might try to upgrade their phone on your dime!
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).

When Are Marijuana Buds Ready to Harvest? - Harvesting at the right time can have a massive effect on the yields and potency of your harvest. It's also important for smell! You'll notice that as you get later in flowering, your plant will hit a apex level of stinky and you'll miss out on that if you harvest too soon.

Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
