Issue #521 - Sunday, April 10, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Overwatering is one of the easiest mistakes to make when growing cannabis. But overwatering a seedling? That mistake is even easier to make because the plants are so fragile when they're young. Learn to water your seedlings correctly and they'll grow much faster in addition to being healthier.
- Check out the latest entry in my grow journal and hear what I have discovered about the HLG 300 R-Spec LED grow light!
- All these growers have bud that is approaching the time for harvest. The plants look drastically different, but the end is the same for all these growers: they're going to have some sticky plants to harvest trim and smoke although the amount will vary greatly between growers (you'll see what I mean 😂)

Are my cannabis seedlings overwatered? (Solved)

Overwatering is one of the most common cannabis seedling problems. I get it. You want to give your new seedlings all the love you can. To be honest, I still do it myself sometimes. Luckily it’s usually not a big deal and easy to fix. If your seedlings are droopy and possibly also with unexpected nutrient deficiencies, you’ve come to the right
tutorial. Solution incoming.
This tutorial will teach you how to spot and treat overwatered marijuana seedlings.
Is my seedling overwatered?
What are the most common symptoms for overwatered cannabis seedlings?
- Droopy
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Growing slow
- Soil never dries out
This is a mild case of overwatering. Notice how the leaves droop down.
This seedling is a little more overwatered.
This overwatered cannabis seedling is starting to show signs of nutrient deficiencies. This is because water and nutrients aren’t able to move properly from the roots to the leaves.
Overwatering symptoms can get out of control if you don’t do something about it. When you see green algae growing on top of the soil, that’s another sign you are overwatering (algae appears when the topsoil stays wet for too long).
Grow Journal Update: Clones are looking happy!
|
|
So far the two grow tents look pretty identical, which is great because that's what I was aiming for with these clones. But soon that will change. In the flowering stage I'll be defoliating one tent but not the other. The goal is to see how flowering stage defoliation affects bud density, quality, and yields between clones grown in identical conditions.
We'll also get buds tested at the lab for THC and terpenes (smell) too! Click here for the full journal plus more information about this experiment.

It’s been about a week since the last update and the plants are growing green and healthy. The clones were a bit yellow when they came out of the aerocloner but now they have a nice green color. They finally caught their stride and now they're growing fast enough
to see significant new growth from day to day.
They look healthy but they’ve been growing a bit slowly in the vegetative stage so far. Here’s a gif showing one of the tents just after the plants were topped (last week) vs one week later (today).
I remember noticing slower growth in the vegetative stage the last time I grew with an HLG
300 R-spec LED light, too. It’s not too surprising since “R-spec” or “red spectrum” grow lights are specifically designed for optimal performance in the cannabis flowering stage while buds are forming. They can be used in the vegetative stage too, but in my experience, the Spider Farmer SF-2000, Mars Hydro TSL 2000, and Electric Sky ES300 LED lights all produced
faster vegetative growth than this R-spec.
- Example for reference with an Electric Sky LED: Cannabis plants after being topped and about a week later (check out the full grow journal
here). Look at all that vegetative growth in just 7 days. It feels like more growth than the HLG 300 R-spec produced over the last week.
But a little extra time in the vegetative stage doesn't bother me as long as the buds turn out amazing. Part of why I decided to use these HLG lights is because the older 2019 version of the HLG R-spec produced some of my favorite buds I've ever grown. I'm excited to see how this 2022 model performs after buds start forming.
The plants have picked up in growth over the last few days and I think they'll look totally different the next time you see them. I'm hoping by next week they'll be spread out enough to fill the tent and we'll flip to 12/12 soon after that. Then the experiment begins!

I'm Talking to You, Scammers!
|
|
Fraud is one of the lamest ways to become a criminal.
Scammers: New-School Fraudsters
For some strange reason, scamming has less perceived harm than people who commit fraud. Guess what? They're the same thing! Scammers are the replacement for our "fraudsters" of yesteryear, except they're more prevalent since scamming is worldwide with minimal startup cost. Be sure that you show both groups the same amount of respect (none) and the same amount of caution (TONS), so we can keep their numbers as small as possible. The less successful scammers are
at scamming, the fewer of them there will be.
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).

Common Seedling Problems & Mistakes - Having a problem with your seedlings is a frustrating experience. Since the plant is so young and new, visual problems stand out more and can be upsetting to newer growers who haven't got to feel the fun side of growing yet. Learn
