Issue #522 - Sunday, April 17, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Uh oh...it's another acronym to introduce to your cannabis growing vocabulary. What is DLI and how does it relate to cannabis growing? Can it help you grow better or are you better off without it? We'll quickly educate you on the subject so you can decide if you think DLI is worth worrying about or not.
- Side-by-side grow journal update: Plants have taken over the tents, and I also have a fun little side project to share!
- Why are LED grow lights so good for growing plants in heat? Part of it has to do with leaf surface temperature. Today I did a little experiment with a temperature gun to help you see with your own eyes!
- There are so many tasty looking colas in the "Trophy Picture of the Week" section that if you're like me, you'll get the strong urge to pluck a few colas from these various strains. When is someone going to make a multi-strain cannabis buffet you can pick through? Oh wait, you can already do it at home! Start with a visual tour today, then grow your own multi-strain buffet!

How to Increase “DLI” for Bigger Yields (Daily Light Integral Tips)
🌞💡🤷♀️💡🌛

What is “DLI” (daily light integral) and how can you increase it for bigger yields?
Definition: DLI stands for daily light integral. It describes how much light in the PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) range is delivered within a 24-hour period to an area. “Daily” because it’s how much in a 24-hour period, “Light” because it measures photons, and “Integral” because scientists need to use an integral (calculus term) to calculate the DLI.
DLI is a measure of the total number of photons in the PAR range received in a day for a specific space. Imagine a bucket that catches photons. DLI measures how full the bucket is after 24 hours.
What does that actually mean? Light is made of many photons, but scientists have found plants can only use photons in a certain range on the spectrum, which they’ve named the PAR range. That’s why DLI is such a useful measurement for growing cannabis. If you imagine photons raining down on your plant like rain, DLI is like if you took a container and captured only PAR photons for a day, then counted
the number of photons in the bucket. Essentially, it tells you how many usable photons land on your plant in a day.
Why is DLI important to you as a marijuana grower?
Because increasing your DLI (properly) is an effective way to increase yields. A higher DLI increases total photosynthesis and drives cannabis plants to produce big buds in the flowering stage. To a point, of course, too much light can harm yields.
The right DLI results in faster growth and bigger buds. These cannabis plants were grown under a Mars
Hydro TSL 2000 LED (here’s the full grow journal) and given excellent DLI to produce over 10 ounces at harvest.

Side-by-Side Grow Journal Update: Tent is almost filled!

“Defoliation tent” on top with “Natural tent” on bottom (both tents have received identical treatment so far but that will be changing next week). Click here for the full journal plus more information about this defoliation experiment.

Almost time to start flowering! – April 16, 2022
The plants have hit their stride under the HLG 300 R-Spec LED grow lights. I can see brand new leaves appearing every day.
I suspect that next week the plants will have completely filled the grow space so I will be ready to start a 12/12 light schedule to initiate the flowering stage. And that means the "defoliation tent" is going to receive its first defoliation, followed by a second defoliation 3 weeks later. The "natural" tent will not have any leaves removed. I will leave it
completely untouched. That means there will be enormous differences between the two grow tents soon.
BONUS PLANT IN A MINI TENT
I had extra mother plants from the beginning of this experiment and decided to start growing a few of them out in mini tents with tiny LED grow lights I have lying around.
I decided to start making grow journals for them too. I've only done one so far but if you're interested in seeing a mini tent grow journal with a plant that was trained like this, check it out!
LED Grow Lights and Leaf Surface Temperature
|
I thought you might think this was interesting. I just wrote an article about the best cannabis grow lights for a hot grow room, and one of the main takeaway points is to use LED grow lights. And one reason is that LEDs do not raise the temperature of a leaf nearly as much as other types of grow lights. As a result, LED plants actually do pretty poorly in the cold but thrive in the
heat.
I wanted to show that to you with numbers.
Note: A temperature gun ($35) is a fun and handy tool. You point it at something and pull the trigger to get the temperature of that surface.
The air of the grow tent is about 77°F. When I use my temperature gun to measure the temperature of the side of the grow tent next to plants, the surface temperature is about the same as the air temperature.
|
However, if I point the temperature gun directly at a leaf, the surface temperature of the leaf is several degrees colder than the temperature of the air or the sides of the grow tent.
In the past, when I’ve run this same test on plants under HPS and LECs (bulb lights), the leaves that get direct light from the bulb have a much higher surface temperature than the air. That’s because bulb lights give off infrared light that raises the temperature of a leaf in addition to providing light. LEDs give off less infrared light and therefore do not raise the internal temperature of a leaf nearly as much. As a result, you can
have a much hotter grow space with LEDs and the plants stay cool on the inside. This makes LEDs perfect for any grower dealing with heat.

"Do you know what strain they are?"
~Rick
Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to tell the strain of a cannabis plant on sight unless it's a strain with unique physical characteristics like ABC, Ducksfoot, or Grinspoon. I have a feeling you'll be happy either way, though. ~Sirius

Zoinks! Like, watch out for Scammers!
|
|
I always hated how dry their sandwiches looked, but I hate scammers more.
It was old-man Scammer all along!
If none of these jokes seemed familiar, you didn't watch Scooby-Doo growing up! Here's a recap: A stoner, his talking dog, and their three preppy friends bust scammers on a weekly basis while being scared the whole time. Although it would be nice if you could personally bust real-life scammers and put them in jail, ensuring they're unsuccessful is the next best thing you can do. Plus keeping money out of scammer's hands helps us all by making them less likely to
scam next time.
Next time you think you smell a scam, hit them with the old cartoon running start (instructions below).

Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone
call, email, etc.).

Cannabis Light Schedules: Vegetative Stage vs Flowering Stage - This could also be called "Cannabis Light Schedules: The most important thing to know about cannabis if you actually want buds". It's way too long of a title, though. Also, autoflowers make that title a bit
inaccurate since they don't care too much about light schedules. Speaking of which...
-
Best light schedule for auto-flowering strains? - If autoflowers don't need a specific light schedule to flower, do light schedules matter to them at all? Yes! It's essential to make
