Issue #514 - Sunday, February 20, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Is it ever really necessary to have a showdown between types of hash? Yes. It's very necessary and and anyone who questions that fact should feel just a wee bit ashamed. Now, let's compare two types of hash to determine which one is worth your time. I promise this article isn't clickbait and we'll pick a winner, but you should still try both for scientific reasons.
- Ever seen brown spots on your cannabis leaves and have no idea what's causing it? Learn the solution to this common but hard-to-diagnose plant problem!
- You've got seedlings growing in a big pot, but they seem so droopy... How do you water seedlings perfectly so they grow as fast as possible? Get a picture guide to perfect seedling watering every time!
- Once again, our collective Sunday will be graced by stunning pictures of someone else's hard work. There's also a plant that had a pretty neat stress reaction that I think any grower will appreciate. Grab your coffee, tea, etc. and get ready for a relaxing look through some cool cannabis plants.

Solventless Extraction Showdown – Bubble Hash vs. Dry-Ice Hash!
🌳🤜🆚🤛🌳
|
|
Introduction: What’s the Best Way to Make Hash at Home?
Hash is a collection of the extracted resin glands (trichomes) from a cannabis plant. The effects of hash are typically much stronger than straight cannabis flowers because trichomes contain concentrated amounts of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids. The two most common types of hash made at home may be bubble hash and dry-ice hash. After releasing tutorials on how to make your own Bubble
Hash and Dry-Ice Hash, we received quite a few emails on the subject of hash. Everyone seems to love extracts in all forms, but there were two distinct opinions that kept showing up over and over again.
The results of making dry ice hash out of an ounce of cannabis
One group feels the dry-ice hash is the only way to go because bubble hash can be time consuming and doesn’t always get great yields.
The other group thinks bubble hash has the best potency/effects, and that dry-ice hash is an easy-to-make but less valuable extract.
Hash is basically a collection of trichomes from a marijuana plant (trichomes are the “sparkles” that grows on buds and leaves)
Pure trichomes are abundant in cannabinoids, which means that any kind of hash is much more potent than typical cannabis.
Honestly, I think they’re both great! But today, that’s not enough. Both types of hash are getting judged on certain attributes and we’ll figure out if one really is better than the other. In this experiment, the process of making bubble hash and dry-ice hash will be
judged by these criteria:
- Appearance - How pretty does it turn out?
- Difficulty - How hard is the technique?
- Yield - How much hash is extracted per ounce of weed?
- Perceived Potency - How strong is it?
What Causes Brown Spots on Cannabis Leaves?
|
|
Note: these brown markings were caused by too much heat and light.
Brown spots on cannabis leaves… the bane of home growers! Brown or bronze markings on leaves are extremely common cannabis growing symptoms. Luckily, it is usually simple and easy to fix once you determine the root cause.

How to Water a Seedling in a Big Pot
|
|
Hint 1: Give seedlings only a little water at a time, and pour it in a small circle around the base of the plant.
Sometimes you want to start your cannabis seeds or clones directly in their final container. This saves time transplanting from smaller containers to big ones. However, when seedlings are growing in a big pot, you need to make sure you’re watering plants properly. Read on to learn exactly what to do.

"Maybe you could do a little piece on information regarding the Autumn Color Effect? I've been seeing it crop up a lot on my plants this winter season - I'd love to hear your take, Neb! Feel free to use my pictures however you please."
~RunWithIt
The color on this plant is lovely! For you to get this effect, you (typically) need two things:
1. The right genetics - only certain strains can change color.
2. Cold night temps - even if you have the right genetics, plants typically need a cooler nights for their color to show.
I say "typically" because there are exceptions, such as plants that turn color with little-to-no change in temperature.

"G'day, Boobah from down under here. Sharing my summertime grow. The girl outside is grown from seed from last summertime grow. Nothing special about soil, handwatered with dept. store general purpose fertiliser. No idea of strain. Avg yeild 6-12oz. Indoor girl is a clone from the outdoor girl. In dwc, General Hydroponics Grow nutrient & under 2x ViparSpectra P2000 LED's. I'm training hard, tieing down, defoliating etc. Could be an
interesting plant. I will be back in touch."
~Boobah
I gotta know how that indoor plant turns out! 🙏 ~Sirius
"Picture of a plant I Fimmed and that got stressed into a hermie. I though it was cool because the 4th node grew exclusively pollen sacs while the 5th grew exclusively pistils. Personally, I don't weed out Hermie's cuz they make making feminized seeds
pretty easy."
~Jack
Before we see the pics, I want to say thanks to Jack for taking the time to document the stress reaction of this plant. It's tough to do in the moment, but it helps growers around the world to see.
Now, lets check out this plants interesting stress reaction!
~Sirius
Click to see a larger version. The top arrows points to pistils (female organs) and the bottom arrow points to a poll sac (male organs).
To make it even crazier, you can see that in this picture, the next node down goes back to pistils (female organs).
Despite the issues, this plant looks healthy and happy.

Quick Guide to Plant Problems

Yes.
"Could this be a trap?"
It might sound mundane, but asking yourself this question out loud if you're in doubt is a good habit. If you're asking yourself this question, you've probably already sensed that something seems a bit fishy. Trust your instincts if you feel apprehensive about something that seems even vaguely scammy. This goes for seed companies DMing you on Instagram, emails asking you for money, or even texts from people claiming to be banks or utility companies. Stay
vigilant my friends!
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).

Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
