Issue #515 - Sunday, February 27, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Hey, would you like to hear about cats and weed together at the same time? I can't hear you answer, so I'm going to assume that you're shouting "Yes!" at the top of your lungs until you're almost out of air. At least, that's what I do no matter how many times you ask me. Onto some cats and cannabis!
- I've got a new article brewing and I need your help to make sure I answer all your questions about next week's topic!
- Finally! The auto-flowering THC and terpene lab results! Oh boy I was not expecting these results. This changes everything. Well maybe not everything but it was really interesting to see how the untrained vs trained autoflowering plants stacked up at the lab. I think you'll be surprised too!
- Caution: Some of the weed displayed in this week's "Trophy Pics of the Week" are dangerously sticky. In fact, they are sticky enough to be officially verified and classified as "sticky icky"*. You've been warned! (*The phrase "sticky icky" is at least 20 years old now. Yikes.)

Why Do Cats Love Cannabis Leaves? 😻🍴🌳
|
|
Did you know a lot of cats (and dogs) love cannabis leaves? Every cat I’ve owned loves to nibble on my plants if given a chance. I’ve heard the same from many other growers. One day you check on your garden only to see cat-sized bites all over your plants.
No kitty! Not my weed plant!
This cat is 2 seconds away from taking a bite
Why do cats love cannabis leaves?
I realized my cats loved cannabis leaves many years ago when one snuck into my grow tent and ate half of my plants. I was so angry at the time but it seems funny now. They eventually learned not to eat leaves off the plants and instead sit patiently next to me as I work in the tent. I reward good behavior with free leaves at the end. My cats go crazy if they see any leaves in my hands
because they know they’re getting a treat.
Am I a bad owner for letting my cat eat leaves? She’s 13 years old now, and I feel like she seems happier after eating leaves. Yet could it be in my head? (click for adorable video of a demanding clumsy cat)
I'm not sure whether cats love leaves because of cannabinoids, the leaf texture, the fact they just like nibbling on plants, or something else. I've heard from other growers that some cats seek out weed plants, while other cats don't seem to have any interest. Every
cat is different.

Short answer: It doesn't seem to hurt them, but click the link anyway to see lots of more cute pictures of cats and discover what I've learned over the years about pet symptom relief and growing weed around pets like cats and dogs.
Auto-Watering Tutorial Coming Next Week!

These seedlings and future mother plants tested my new auto-watering drip system
In a few moments I will share the exciting lab results from my recent auto-flowering grow journal. It took longer than expected to send the buds to the lab as I unexpectedly had to go out of town for a week.
The good news is that I set up an auto-watering system with drip feed to water my plants while I was gone and it went awesome. Since I've been home I've continued watering my plants with this system. It's actually easier than regular watering. Next week's newsletter will feature an article on how to set one of these up because it's been saving me a lot of time and I bet it could be a good choice for many of you, too.
Reply to this email and let me know what questions you want to see answered in the article about how to set up an auto-watering drip feed system.

Autoflowering lab results!!!!

Check out the averages for each tent! Full lab results below
They're here! This grow journal featured auto-flowering plants grown in identical conditions in identical tents. In the "trained" tent I topped all the plants and trained them to stay short, while the plants in the "untrained" tent were left to grow wild. I didn't do anything to those plants except water them from seed to harvest.
The idea was to find out exactly how training affects the yields and bud quality of autoflowering plants. I did think the trained tent was going to have significantly bigger yields but the untrained tent grew wild and the big plants yielded a lot though the buds were not as dense. As a result, the yields were almost the same.
I have to admit I'm super excited about seeing the test results. I've heard growers over the years say that topping and training plants causes them to grow higher levels of THC and smells, but it's pretty shocking to see it play out that way in the lab results.
Winner: Trained Tent
- Slightly bigger yields
- Higher THC levels
- More terpenes (stronger smell)
- Buds are significantly denser
- Higher overall bag appeal
There isn't a single measurable factor where the untrained tent won. Now it's important to remember that these are autoflowering plants, which means they were grown from seeds instead of clones. Instead of twins, the plants were siblings. That means that the changes between the tents could be a matter of natural variation. I would have to repeat the test a few more times in order to feel confident about the results as far as THC, yields, and terpenes.
Unfortunately, I can't run this test with clones because the process of cloning is essentially topping the plant so you can't create clones that are "untrained" or unaltered.
That being said, I feel the results are pretty clear in my mind. Unless I re-run the experiment, I don't plan to ever let auto-flowering plants grow wild indoors again :)
See the full update! (includes individual plant weights and links to the complete lab results if you want to sift through the data yourself)

"Sirius I have never seen a seed do this don't know if it will make it but its starting backwards lol. Just thought it was cool and I would share."
~Oldjarhead100
Whoa, that is pretty cool and I can't say that I've seen that before. This seedling must have gotten bad directions because it's leaving the shell backwards 🤣 ~Sirius
P.S. I asked Nebula and she said out of hundreds of seed germinations she's never seen one come out "leaves first" instead of "root first". This really shows how the first two leaves are already fully formed in the shell before germination.
"This is mostly wedding cake and G.M.O . The block O weed is the wedding cake after curing for about a month. It turned out great got a bunch of hash from my trim also"
~Shep
Wow, I bet your home smelled wonderful during the harvest and trim! Well done! 🏆 ~Sirius

Admiral Ackbar wouldn't lie to you!
"It's definitely not a trap!" - Imperial Scammers
In an ideal world, you would have a trustworthy friend like Admiral Ackbar to warn you before someone scams you or blows up your spaceship. In the real world, you'll need to stay on your toes and be your own early-warning system for scammy behavior. If you're in a situation where someone wants your money and you start feeling even a little bit suspicious, pretend you hear Admiral Ackbar yelling "It's a trap!" and exit the situation as soon as
possible!
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).
