Issue #523 - Sunday, April 24, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- When you're picking out a grow light to produce high-quality homegrown cannabis, a few specific steps ensure you get the best type of lighting for your situation. This article will give you three actionable steps you can take that will end up with you owning the best grow light for your setup.
- I just wanted to congratulate New Jersey who just launched adult-use cannabis sales on April 21, 2022!
- Defoliation day has come! See the insane amount of leaves and stems I removed from plants just before they enter the flowering stage!
- Do you love looking at horrifying bug pictures? I know I do! Check out some crazy awesome closeups of gross bugs attacking cannabis plant roots, and help us identify the one remaining mystery bug!
- I'm not the type of grower that picks buds off of a growing plant to "sample" it early. However, when it's other people's very pickable-looking plants, it suddenly seems like a good idea. Check out the trophy pictures in the appropriate section below and I thin you'll feel the same as I do.

Side-by-Side Grow Journal Update: Defoliation day!
|
|
Today was a big day for the defoliation tent. It got its first major plucking. Here’s what the tent looked like immediately after being defoliated and lollipopped. Look how many leaves and small stems were removed! Click here for the full journal plus more information about this defoliation experiment.

Initiated 12/12 and first defoliation! – April 20, 2022
4/20 seemed an appropriate day to switch to 12/12 and do the first defoliation 🙂
The “natural tent” (blue tags) on the left was left unchanged, while the "defoliation tent" on the right (white tags) received a major defoliation session. It will receive one more about 3 weeks from now.
Here are what the plants look like now. "Natural tent" on left. "Defoliation tent" on right.
Root Aphids & Drain Flies in RDWC Hydro

If you like looking at insanely clear pictures of horrifying creepy crawlies, you'll love this page. I personally am fascinated by bug pictures. Sirius received several amazing pictures of root aphids and drainfly larvae sent in by a reader named Rob MK, who was kind enough to let us publish them so everyone can enjoy.
See all the pictures!
Bonus: Can you identify this bug? This creature is tiny compared to the cannabis root it's hanging out on. If you know what this bug is, hit the reply button and let us know!

I think I found a journal entry from this grower:
"Day 65: The buds grow larger by the day. I am now 100% positive that they're taking my car out at night and buying Taco Bell on my credit card. If you're reading this it's too late for me. Just know that they never shared the tacos or paid for gas."

"1st indoor grow. FFOF, Fox Farms Trio. Day 70 flower. This is a clone from my first outdoor grow last year. Unknown strain"
~Pdubs
I like the structure of this plant; it makes me wanna pick off a few buds 🌳🤏 ~Sirius
"A little thing we like to call, "laying down on the job!"
The most beautiful plants I've ever grown was by using Nebula's manifolded tutorial which is typically only achievable from seed. I came up with this grow technique to achieve the same plant architecture as manifolding using clones. Enjoy!"
~Coco Lopez
You may have learned manifolding from Nebula, but what you're doing here is next level! 😲🤯 ~Sirius

Quick Guide to Plant Problems

It Could Happen to YOUR Ice Cream!
|
|
It would've been worse if he put it back, right?
|
Protect your ice cream, and the ice cream of those you love.
I've got to get serious with you regarding a sensitive subject. There are millions of people walking around with delicious ice cream just waiting to be stolen. And just like the guy above, you could fall victim and lose your frosty treat before you even know anything has happened. You'd be ice-cream-less and probably wondering how life could be so cruel.
Now imagine that same scenario, but the guy steals a few thousand dollars for which you're held accountable. Suddenly, the humor goes to a 0 out of 10. If scammers were like the trickster above, the world would be a substantially better place. But since scammers steal anything you own that they can get their hands on, make sure to stay alert and don't end up like the poor victim of brutal ice cream theft shown
above. I'm going to have to go get some ice cream after witnessing such a senseless crime*.
*I'm making lots of jokes, but seriously, scammers suck. Please be on the look out.
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone
call, email, etc.).

- Can you get in trouble for ordering cannabis seeds in the US? - This article is brand new but we didn't post it as a separate newsletter. It's more for people who are just thinking about growing, but the
short answer is that we've been unable to find information about even a single person who has been arrested for purchasing cannabis seeds.
-
What to do with extra weed (curse of the grower) - This is another article that Nebula snuck under the radar. Once you successfully complete a few grows with a decent setup, you'll quickly run into the common grower-problem, "I've got too much
damn weed in my house!" Although it's a great problem to have, you'll want to know what to do with all that green when it starts piling up...
-
How to Grow Up to a Pound of Cannabis with a 315 LEC Grow Light - Although LECs were the rage and still produce absolutely fantastic weed, many growers (especially those starting this year) might not know about this type of light and the benefits that come with
it. LECs are older technology, but they're (possibly?) unequaled in their ability to make glittery bud that seems to overproduce trichomes.
- MH & HPS Grow Lights for Cannabis - The MH/HPS combo was what you would find in nearly every grower's tent up until a few-ish years ago. They produce a lot of heat, but they also produce an amount of weed that I would classify as "too much"
and colas that are problematically large. LEDs are better for most people trying to grow their own weed, but the HPS still has some benefits that have yet to be matched by another light...

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
