Issue #524 - Sunday, May 1, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- At some point in every grower's career, you're going to get brown, crispy tips on your cannabis leaves. This is a product of the super-common problem known a nutrient burn. But what does it mean when the leaf tips turn yellow instead? It's a commonly misdiagnosed problem with a completely different cause and today, we're going to show you what to do if it happens to you!
- Check out the latest update on my side-by-side defoliation experiment. Last week was the first defoliation session and you may be surprised to see how different those plants look this week!
- Check out how productive my 3' tall mini tent with a 65W LED grow light is so far! It's amazing what 65W can do in the right growing environment.
- This week's "Trophy Pics of the Week" are one heck of a mixed bag. We have the usual suspects: great looking plants that I wish I could sample through the screen. But we also have a cute mutant (a cutant?), an absolutely epic LST skeleton and an amazing creation in grow-based automation. Jealousy, activate!

Why Are My Cannabis Leaf Tips Yellow? 🌳🍃🤧🤷♀️

Grow tent update – April 29, 2022
It's been a little over a week since the last update and the tents look almost exactly the same as each other again from afar. The only visual difference is that there are fewer leaves at the bottom of the defoliated plants. Other than that they seem to have just as many leaves as the other tent!
At 9 days after initiating 12/12, the plants are only just starting to put out significant pistils (white hairs) to show buds are forming. This seems a little slower than normal. When I’ve grown the Runtz clones under different LEDs, the plants started flowering within a week of receiving 12/12. I suspect the red spectrum of this HLG 300 R-Spec LED may have something to do with the slow start.
By next week I’ll have some significant buds to show you!
HLG 65W LED Grow Light Tent Update
|
|
For those following my 3' tall mini tent grow under a tiny HLG 65W LED grow light, the plant seems to be developing perfectly. Ever since it started flowering I have just been giving nutrient water and that's it. The blue-heavy light ("4000k" spectrum) of this LED model helped the plant naturally stay short during the flowering stretch and now that plant has stopping growing taller and buds are getting
fatter.

"Sunday morning.......
Bacon & eggs, sports section and Nebula Haze.
I love your tutorials and the pics of what other growers are doing.
Have a wonderful week 😊"
~Jeff
I love hearing that we're a part of people's Sunday mornings. It's like we're all hanging out for a bit on the weekend. ~Sirius

"I would like to thank you. Thanks for the very deep and detailed explanations. Thanks for the experience that you share. Thanks for the treasure your site is.
I also dig the part where you talk about 1/3 part rich soil in the bags, where the roots will get nutrients when needed, I am experimenting with this indoors, because I don't like chemicals. Thank you!"
~Janique
Super soil is great if you want something more "natural" while also making the job easier on yourself. 👍 ~Sirius
"Lots of love to you Nebula for teaching me how to grow. All my friends smoke for free now 😂"
~Wade213
Giving free weed to a friend is a great feeling. They're always really happy and they get to enjoy something you created. How cool is that?! ~Sirius

"Hi guys, Boobah from down under again. Sharing with you the end result of my summertime grow (indoor). Monster cropped, lots of tying down, defoliating, more defoliating, lots of tying up, beautiful trichones and now harvest, trim and cure. The plant seemed to take for ever to finish but I think its due to the defoliation. Long way to go trimming but I am very happy with outcome. Gunna flip her back into grow again and see how she
goes."
~Boobah
Trichomes are looking good, plant is looking good, trimmed buds are looking sticky. Grading...🅰➕

"Has anyone ever seen a pot leaf do this? I grew a seed I got in a bud of Birthday Cake and it turned out to be a female. Just 1 leaf had a little piggy back. The buds are awesome."
~Patrick
It looks like this one grew an extra finger 😂 It's a somewhat common mutation and luckily, all it does it look a little funny 👍~Sirius
"4/22 week prior to going 12/12
4/29 one week after defoliation and start of 12/12
6/29 day of harvest
6/30 branching after harvest."
~gr865
I love a good story told through pictures. 📖 Well done! ~Sirius
"Thank you!!! I am a Patreon supporter. Your site has helped me take my grow to the next level. The pictures I am sharing are of a wall tablet I made to control my grow room. I made this with an opensource platform called Home Assistant and Tileboard. I coded
this with JavaScript I learned in my free time. It automatically waters and keeps track of what I fed the plants and other maintenance. It also links to your site to diagnose my sick plants. It all runs locally on my home network."
~Steve
Holy cow...this is amazing! I've seen people automate their grows with Arduino, but this might be my favorite implementation of automation I've seen so far. If you want to provide more information on this project, I'm sure there would be lots of interested growers including myself. ~Sirius
This page shows nutrient history...
Remote watering controls and moisture sensing. So jealous!
Light controls, temperature and humidity. Note that this controls his devices, this isn't just some fancy monitor.
It's good to know that this grower has Tegridy.
Quick Guide to Plant Problems

Scammers, you got some splainin' to do!
|
|
In case you were wondering, she grabs nine chocolates and drops one.
|
Scammers steal cash faster than Lucy can hide chocolates
Take the hard work and comedic nature of Lucille Ball in this scene, remove the funny, and pretend all the chocolates are credit card numbers. I know it's absurd, but it's a pretty accurate depiction of how much information is being stolen by scammers and used to steal money. Lucy can't scoop up candy fast enough to match the rate at which scammers steal information, money and identities.
And that's not counting social engineering scams like people pretending to be someone else, selling fake seeds, or even just pretending to sell seeds. Be on the lookout whenever someone is asking for money and remember to do business only when the person taking your money can be held accountable if something goes wrong.
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone
call, email, etc.).

- Light Burn or Light Stress - Light stress can dramatically slow down plant growth while light burn is a physical symptom of light stress. These both tend to happen when growers (like me) try to give a plant too much light. Many of us were taught
that more is better but that's not always the case...
-
PSA: Cannabis Can Get Too Much Light?! - Like I said in the end of the last bullet point, more is not always better when it comes to providing light for your cannabis plants. Grow lights can dish out a crazy amount of photons and in some cases, it's just too much. Check out
this article for more info.
-
Plant Doctor – Diagnose Your Cannabis Plants! - Hopefully, light stress is the only problem you deal with since it's easy to fix. But if you're dealing with other issues with your plant, this is a great place to go to learn how to identify the issue and quickly
fix it. Cannabis is a hardy plant and if you react quickly, they can survive almost anything.
- How to Make Cannabis Tinctures - Have you ever made an edible cannabis tincture? For those who don't know, a tincture is high-proof alcohol infused with cannabis. They're usually awful to eat, but really strong. If you have experience
with tinctures, reply to this message and tell me what you thought. I'll test any good information and add it to the page if it works well. Every reply will be read!

Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
