How to Find the Right Strain to Grow by Nebula Haze |

Strains… There are a few widely known cannabis strains, like "White Widow" (pictured here to the right). But for cannabis growers today, there are literally thousands of strains to choose from. Each strain has it’s pros and cons. Each one produces different effects. Unfortunately, even knowing the strain name isn't necessarily enough to tell you what to expect from a plant! There are sometimes different versions of strains by different breeders. When there are several versions of popular strains, each version can grow wildly different from each other and produce different results. "White Widow" from one breeder may be completely different from "White Widow" by another breeder. So while you're researching strains, always pay attention to the breeder in addition to the strain name. Learn about some trusted breeders. Genetics play a huge role in how your cannabis plants grow, including the effects, appearance, smell and taste of their buds. So how do you pick the right strain? These steps will show you the way. How to Pick the
Right Cannabis Strains First, what exactly are you looking for? ◦ Medical vs Recreational ◦ Physical or Mental Effects, Bud Appearance, Color and Smell Find strains that fit your criteria Narrow down your list to a few
strains Compare these strains directly to determine your winner(s)
Let’s go through that list one step at a time... 1.) Determine exactly what you’re looking for Every grower has different needs. Are you looking for medical cannabis, or non-medical cannabis? Do you need a strain that’s easy to grow? Are you just looking for the most potent strain possible? Perhaps you want to grow purple or pink buds that look like the buds you see in a magazine. Regardless of what you’re looking for, chances are there’s a strain, or many strains, that fit your needs. Indica vs Sativa (& Auto-flowering) Strains One thing to keep in mind is “Indica” vs “Sativa” plants. These are not always the case, and characteristics vary a
lot by strain, but this list should help give you an idea of what to expect in general from Indica vs Sativa strains. The above plants were grown in the exact same environment. Notice how much a difference the strain made as far as their growth patterns. Indica Strains Generally
grows denser buds Grows short and bushy as opposed to quickly growing tall. Indicas usually do not stretch much after
being switched to the flowering stage Tends to produce a more “heavy” or “couchlock” effect, though it varies by
strains Tends to be more cold resistant May not be able to cope well in very hot weather Many Indica-dominant strains have relatively higher levels of CBD (1-2%)
Sativa StrainsSome sativa-leaning strains tend to produce less dense buds. You may end up with very long buds as opposed to small thick nuggets like with some indica-leaning strains Tends to grow very tall, with a big stretch after being switched to the flowering stage (often doubling, or even tripling in height after the switch to flower) Can provide a cerebral “daytime” or “trippy” effect that many growers love. Usually can’t cope with cold Often very heat-resistant Often low in CBD (less than 1%)
Auto-Flowering Strains Usually carries a mix of Indica and Sativa characteristics, since all auto-flowers have been mixed with other cultivated strains Short life cycle - seed to harvest in 2-3 months. Tend to stay small, so lower overall yields. Sometimes called "Lowryders" or "Ruderalis" strains. “Auto-Flowering” means these strains don’t need special light cycles to initiate budding. Here’s some ideas to get you started on the path of cannabinoid research. I am not a doctor, and this is not any type of medical advice, but I want to share what I’ve learned about specific cannabinoids. I hope this helps give you a place to start. THC stands for “Tetrahydrocannabinol,” which is a fancy word to describe the main cannabinoid in cannabis that produce psychotropic effects. CBD stands for Cannabidiol, a non-psychotropic cannabinoid that has recently been in the spotlight for its medical effects. CBN stands for Cannabinol, another known cannabinoid. While CBN is a product of THC, it causes less psychotropic effects and more of a body relaxation effect. The CBN levels do not have a lot to do with strain. The CBN levels of buds can be raised by harvesting plants later, giving time for some of the THC to turn into CBN. There are many other cannabinoids, but THC, CBD, and CBN are the most well-known and studied. We still have a lot left to learn from the others. When shopping around for strains, you’ll often be able to get information from the breeder about THC and CBD levels. Medical Strains Low THC, High CBD High THC Pain Nausea Lack of Appetite
Avoid “dabs” or waxes as they can contain contaminants that aren’t appropriate in a medical setting When shopping around for strains, many breeders will give you information about the THC and CBD levels of the buds produced by
this strain of cannabis. If they can’t give you specific numbers, I recommend avoiding that breeder if you’re a medical cannabis patient. Non-Medical Strains
High THC, Low
CBD Medium THC, Medium CBD High THC, Medium CBN (due to harvesting plants later) The following factors vary quite a bit from strain to strain, and also change due to different growing
methods. Varies by strain: Once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll be able to use this knowledge to help research individual strains that fit your list of needs. Cannabis Cup Winners Some growers are really interested
in growing the most famous strains and cannabis cup winning strains of the moment, and recent strain winners. One thing to keep in mind is that newly created
strains tend to be less stable and your plant may end up growing in an unexpected way. Yet many cup winners offer unique characteristics which can’t be found anywhere else. What characteristics are you looking for? Make your list now. 2.) Create a list of a few possible strains (here's how to do that step-by-step) Now it’s time to create a list of possible cannabis strains.
In this section I will walk you step-by-step through how I narrow down to a list of 5 strains that fit my needs according to the characteristics we just found in the last step.
Narrowing your list down this way will prevent you from having
to stumble through tens of thousands of strains trying to find just the right one. Continue reading this article....
7 Cool Growing Tools You Might Not Know About |
|
One of the toughest parts of becoming good at growing cannabis - or pretty much any other skill for that matter - is learning how to improvise. At some point in every growers career, they will run into a problem that needs
a custom-tailored solution. When there’s nothing available that can easily rectify a problem, being able to improvise a solution that makes both you and your plants happy is the next best thing. But the goal of this article isn’t to teach you improvisation skills, in fact we’re going to do the opposite! Instead, I want to show you some weird/cool tools I’ve found that can solve some of the unique problems us growers run into. Although being able to improvise is a must-have skill, it’s just as important to know when to use the right tools. No one wants to spend lots of time and effort to fix a problem when there is a $1 solution that can do the job more effectively. So let’s get to those tools!

"Growing cannabis is a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much
easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, perlite, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
