Complete Grower's Shopping List
by Nebula Haze
Checklist

Over the years we've had lots of people request "starter" shopping lists for new growers - it can be frustrating trying to figure out exactly what supplies you need to start growing cannabis indoors! So today I decided to make a few comprehensive shopping lists for common setups that include everything from nutrients to grow lights to rope ratchets. I'll even tell you what yields to expect with each setup.

If you don’t want to have to figure out exactly what to buy to start growing, this article is for you! I will break down what to expect based on your space limits and desired yields, so you can get the exact perfect setup for your situation.

For each example I’m going to include a matching grow tent, as I believe grow tents are the best way to create a perfect environment for your plant at a really low cost. But if you want to skip the tent and make your own grow space in a grow box or closet, learn how to create the perfect growing environment for your plants!

These cannabis plants are in the Hobbyist Large (600W MH/HPS) setup, which on average yields 10-21 ounces

Growing Setup Examples
(starting from scratch)

I tried to include everything in these lists, as if someone were growing marijuana completely from scratch. For each example I calculated the cost as if you were buying everything online off of Amazon.com from the included links. A lot of these items cost less money if you shop around online or buy them in person, and you may already have some stuff lying around the house already.

  • Average Yields: 1-2 ounces
  • Recommended 1 plant
  • Grow space is 2’x2’x4’ or larger
  • Setup Cost if No Fan or Carbon Filter: $364
  • Setup Cost w/ Fan & Carbon Filter: $449.00

  • Average Yields: 2-4 ounces
  • Recommended 1-2 plants
  • Grow space is 2’x2’x5’ or larger
  • Setup Cost if No Fan or Carbon Filter: $501
  • Setup Cost w/ Fan & Carbon Filter: $586.00

  • Average Yields: 4-9 ounces
  • Recommended 1-4 plants
  • Grow space is 2’x2’x5’ or larger
  • Setup Cost: $648.00
* Alternative/Equivalent LED Grow Light: Kind LED Grow Light "K3 L600"

Note: Because the 250W light runs significantly cooler and tends to grow smaller plants compared to the bigger HPS grow lights, the 250W setup uses a cheaper exhaust fan and carbon scrubber. The lower cost of these items is why this setup is so much cheaper than the other HPS setups.

  • Average Yields: 7-14 ounces
  • Recommended 2-6 plants
  • Grow space is 3’x3’x5’ or larger (2'x4'x5' also works)
  • Setup Cost: $839.00
* Alternative/Equivalent LED Grow Light: Kind LED Grow Lights "K5 XL750"

  • Average Yields: 10-21 ounces
  • Recommended 2-8 plants
  • Grow space is 3.5’x3.5’x6’ or larger
  • Setup Cost: $890.00
* Alternative/Equivalent LED Grow Light: Kind LED Grow Light "K5 XL1000"

Although there is a larger size MH/HPS grow light available (1000W), at that size it starts going outside the scope of a "hobbyist" grower as far as ease and yields. In addition to needing a lot of extra cooling, a 1000W HPS grow light is less efficient compared to a 600W grow light (as far as how much light is put out for electricity used). I think most hobbyist growers would be happier with a 600W, or even two 600W lights, over a 1000W.

Where did the word "cola" come from?

I got an interesting reply to a recent article we shared about plant training in the Sunday newsletter.

This is what we said in the article....

What's a cola? A "cola" is an informal term used by cannabis growers to describe a main stem or 'growth tip' that has made it all the way to the top of the canopy."

Each growth tip/cola looks a little like a "star" from above in the vegetative stage. Can you spot the 8 main colas on this plant?
Nurture lots of colas for a "sea" of bud sites in the flowering stage!

In response we got this note, which I thought was really neat :) You learn something new every day! ~Nebula

Subject: cola trivia

Message: Hi! Thanks for the great article about no technique growing. Cola is a Spanish term meaning "tail" and was mostly used by weed smugglers and Mexican growers. Back in the 70s when marijuana was mostly of the commercial brick variety, we'd always look for weed that had the biggest colas. LR
Learn Your Plant's Gender as Soon as 3 Weeks From Seed!

What are cannabis "pre-flowers?" They are little versions of adult flowers that appear on your plants and can help you figure out the plant gender as soon as possible. Only female plants make buds so most growers toss male plants immediately. Cannabis pre-flowers can give you a way to determine your plant gender when it's as young as 3 weeks from seed.

Yes, that's right, you can learn your plants gender while it is still in the vegetative stage just by knowing the right place to look! Male plants usually show their gender around week 3-4 from seed, and female plants tend to take a week or two longer before they show their first pre-flower.

Here's what cannabis pre-flowers look like for male and female plants:
Male Pre-Flower --> Toss plant immediately!
Female Pre-Flower --> Yay, this means buds are coming!
Sometimes you'll see a female pre-flower that hasn't grown its first white hair ("pistil") yet, and this can be confused with a male pollen sac.

For example, the following plant is female even though there's no pistil yet. You can tell because the pre-flower is more pointy and less spade-shaped than a pollen sac. But if you wait a few more days you'll know for sure whether it's female because white pistils should start appearing.

This is also a Female Pre-Flower (pistil hasn't emerged yet)

I just want to say your website is absolutely fantastic. So comprehensive, so thorough, written so friendly. You've done a really great job. Must've been a ton of work. Thank you, truly.

Trophy Pics of the Week!
These four Grand Daddy Purple clones did 90 days of veg including initial topping at the 6th node, LST & what you've described as 'advanced defoliation' throughout. Too much at times.

On 4/20, as chance would have it, day 90 marked the beginning of 12/12 light schedule. I accidentally re-veged during week 2 b/c its my first grow and i didn't know that showing it during dark time would screw me for a whole week!

I want to say thanks to the authors of my primary reading material for the last 4 months as i enter month 5 & almost week 4 of flower (incl. that damn re-veg week) Thank you thank you thank you. No other site lays it out there like you guys do.
