Leaf Miners, Leafhoppers and Broad Mites

We've had several outdoor growers write in lately about bugs that are attacking their plants. Right now in the Northern Hemisphere is when certain bugs are really attacking in earnest.

Today I'm going to share 3 of the most common outdoor cannabis pests people have been writing in about, but if you can't find your bug check out our complete list below!

These mites are so small you will likely never see them even under a magnifier. However, you can tell your plant has been infected because your new leaves will be blistered, twisted and glossy. The overall plant will also be growing poorly and if it's flowering the buds may turn brown. Broad mites and russet mites are often mistaken for other problems like nutrient deficiencies, heat stress or pH problems.

These bugs come in almost every color known to man so sometimes it can be tough to tell what they are even if you catch a bug in action. However, they all make clusters of spots on your leaves where they've sucked out all the sap, so if you see spots like this you know you've got leafhoppers!

Leaf miners are larva that actually live inside your leaves and tunnel through them to eat! If you don't know what causes these lines in your leaves, it can be confusing because you will never see bugs crawling around! If you look closely at the lines, sometimes you can see a little dark spot at the end - that's the bug inside the leaf!

How much of a difference does genetics make?

The genetics of your plant make a huge difference in your bud yields, looks and potency. If you choose to grow "bag seeds" (random seeds found in bud) you could end up growing something that isn't exactly what you want!

Example: These plants were grown in the exact same conditions, but the strain on the right yielded almost 2 times as much as the one on the left!

Learn a few tips and tricks to choosing the strain that you'll be most happy with!

Nebula's Recent Harvest

6.4 oz under 250W HPS Grow Light
(complete grow journal coming soon!)

If you're interested in getting quality genetics, Nirvana is one of my favorite seed sources (or view our full list of trustworthy seed sources here).
I just finished growing their White Rhino strain (this is the second time I've grown White Rhino from Nirvana) and I'm beyond pleased with the results from my tiny 250W HPS! This was the biggest cola.
Hanging to dry
The yield ended up being 6.4 oz, and the buds are sticky, smelly and smooth!
Bonus: You can't catch bugs from seeds!

Today we talked a lot about bugs. I was actually planning on getting some local clones for my next grow (I've used only seeds for years now), but after writing these bug articles I'm terrified haha. I spoke with dozens of growers and the #1 reason they got bugs is they brought an infested clone into their garden. Many of them took precautions such as dipping new clones and quarantining them, but sometimes it's not enough.
Look Who's Talking!

Thank you for the great article last week about buds taking a long time to mature. I have one plant maturing much slower than the other and this was just the info I needed.

Thanks again for the stellar learning materials. They are, by far, the best information and tutorials out there.

Sirius Fourside is a hobbyist grower who has gained the bulk of his experience growing in water as a medium (deep water culture, bubbleponics).

"Growing cannabis is a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
