What Is "1 Gram Per Watt" and Why Do Indoor Growers Want
It?
As a cannabis grower, you may have come across this term: "1 Gram/Watt"
What does it
mean?
It's an unofficial measurement for indoor growers that refers to the yield you get from a certain wattage of light. For example if you're using a 600W grow light, yielding 1 gram/watt would mean you harvested 600 grams of bud. If you only harvested 300 grams, it means you got 0.5 grams/watt (300
grams divided by 600 watts).
Just to put things into perspective, even 0.5 gram/watt is considered a good yield, so going for twice that is pretty crazy!
A yield of one gram per watt is considered the "upper limit" of what's possible with indoor grow lights (though it can be beaten)! An average-to-good grow yields about 0.5 grams/watt. One gram per watt is meant to be a sort of "upper limit" of what to expect from indoor grow lights as far as yields. Although it's possible to get even better yields from your grow lights
(especially if you have the resources and space of a commercial grower), even getting close is a difficult task that requires preparation and a good setup. Most people are not going to put in the time or money for this and that's okay!
In fact, many hobbyist growers aren't as concerned with yields as much as making sure they're getting the effects they want from their buds...and that's the right fame of mind! But even if you don't care that much about yields, it can still be fun to try to beat your own record! The following tutorial will explain how to use this concept to your advantage, and then I'll teach you how to actually achieve it yourself!

If you’ve researched different types of cannabis grow lights for indoor growers, you’re sure to have come across LEDs. They're the grow lights that make plants look purple!
LEDs seem like they would be the best of all grow lights for growing cannabis - they're low on energy,
low on heat, and also they just look cool!
HPS on the other hand, which are normally consider the "gold standard" of grow lights, are hot and need ducting to work properly.

Can an LED Beat an HPS?
In my opinion, no, but I'll tell you exactly why! There are 5 barriers right now that are preventing LEDs from completely dominating the entire market!

I dropped in a few seeds in my tomato garden as a lark and fell in love when they sprouted. Looking for info online, I came across your site. I have studied it everyday and now looking at a beautiful and bountiful first harvest. Your site is educational and BS
free...it has been my bible. I did order a couple of books you reviewed and several products you recommended, all of which were spot on. Thanks for all that.

Two very different unknown strains from Grass O Matic.
Unknown strains were sent to me from a mate. They were free seeds from a seedbank purchase. Was a mixed pack from Grass O Matic. - 600W HPS light running 24/7
- 60cmx90cm DIY stealth
cupboard
- 25cm Diameter pots, should have used 30 or 40cm
- Pure coco grow, not mixed with anything
- Nutrients were GH Flora Trio and
CaliMagic
Plain PHd tap water for first two weeks. After first two weeks added 2.5ml per Gal of GH Calcimagic until flush.
I gave GH Flora Trio Series from week 4 as well as CalciMagic. Trio mixed at half strength of the
amounts listed on the GH Drain to Waste schedule found on their website, not the amounts listed on the bottle.
Fed nutrient solution daily. pH between 5.5 and 6.2 going in, never measured runoff. I don't have any ppm readings as I don't have a meter.

No training or thinning of any kind (except a bit of thinning for photos just prior to harvest). Lifted smaller lady up so
she was the same height as the taller one.
Temperature was pretty consistent between 22-28C for the entire grow, no idea about RH as again I don't have a meter for that.
- 4.5 Oz good dried & cured buds from the short fat lady
- 3.5 Oz good dried & cured buds from the taller more sativa dominant looking strain.
- 3 Oz of dried & cured small buds & good trim for edibles
All up 11 ounces of useable material from a
first grow.
I gained all the information I needed from this website as well as The Cannabis Grow Bible: The Definitive Guide to Growing Marijuana for Recreational and Medical Use by Greg Green and The Cannabis Encyclopedia by Jorge Cervantes.

easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
