Is My Cannabis Ready to Harvest?
by Nebula Haze

Thanks to all our readers who sent in pics!
Cannabis buds can come in all shapes and sizes! Although variety is the spice of life, it can make it a little confusing to know when to harvest your buds based on how your plants look. But if you harvest when buds are ready you'll get the best yields and potency, so it's a good idea to try to harvest as the right time if you can!

We have a full harvest tutorial, but this article is mostly just a picture gallery :)

When buds first appear on your plant they look like little round puffs of hair. Each bud is made up of many white hairs ("pistils") that stick straight out.

Baby buds (budlets) look like a ball of white hairs. These buds have many weeks to go!
As the plant buds get closer to harvest, they thicken and those white pistils start to darken and curl in. You'll notice your buds are slowly getting thicker and more dense. However if you still have a lot of straight white pistils, like this bud, you know you still have a few weeks to go.
You're in the harvest window when most of the pistils have darkened and curled in. This bud is now ready to harvest!
But sometimes it's a little difficult to identify when buds are ready, since each plant is different and buds can look very different at harvest time. So today I want to share lots and lots of pictures of many different cannabis buds that are ready to harvest so you can see the full gamut of variation!

Continue to the picture gallery below, or read the full tutorial on when to harvest your cannabis :)

These Cannabis Plants Are Ready to Harvest!

Without further ado, here's the gallery of "ready for harvest" cannabis buds!
Some buds kind of look almost white at harvest due to either lots of trichomes or the buds themselves may be pale. This type of coloring is how strains like "White Widow" got their name :) If you look closely the actual pistils/hairs have all darkened and curled in, so this bud is ready to harvest!
Another example of a pale bud that is ready to harvest
This bud has many tiny new sugar leaves and new pistils on top. It also has a top-heavy "fist" shape. These are common symptoms of heat or light damage, especially if they only appear on the parts of the plant close to the light. If this is happening, look at the older parts of the buds to decide when to harvest. Even though there's a bunch of new white pistils on top, this bud is ready right now because the rest of the bud looks good!

How to Grow in KIND "Super" Soil

For those who don't want to deal with bottles of nutrients or testing pH, "super" soil might be something to look into! Super soil has been amended and composted for months in order to create a "living" soil that feeds your plants nutrients using a colony of microorganisms, just like in nature!

When growing this way, you usually don't have to worry about adding nutrients since they will be slowly released throughout the grow. As another benefit, in super soil your roots can tolerate a far wider range of pH levels. As a result many growers they don't need to worry about testing and adjusting for pH in super soil (though if your water is really alkaline or acidic you may still want to manage your pH with organic sources).

With super soil you just water your plants and let the soil do the work for you!

However, it can be a little tricky growing with super soil since you need to treat it a little bit differently than regular soil in order to get the best results.

Recently, a grower named Royal Nugs in our forum shared how he grows with super soil, and I wanted to share his tips (and pics) with you!

KindSoil / Coco Loco

by Royal Nugs

For those that are unfamiliar with KindSoil, it's a concentrated super soil that you throw into the bottom of your final pot. You use 1 pound for every 1 gallon of pot size. I.E. For a 3 gallon pot, you would use 3 pounds of KindSoil.

The rest of the pot is filled with Coco Loco. You can use any media, I chose Coco Loco as the owner recommends it.

Strains

Back left is Purple Kush by Genofarm
Back right is El Fuego by GYO (DNA genetics)
Front left is Ice Bomb by Bomb Seeds
Front right is Lemon Headband Kush by Humboldt Seeds

Daily Care

I originally germinated in Rapid Rooters then moved the seedlings into solo cups filled with Coco Loco. After the leaves grew past the edges of the cup, I moved them into the 3 gal pots with the KindSoil and Coco Loco.

When you water in this system, you don't water to runoff. You water enough to saturate your media and keep the plants happy. I've been using about a quart of PH'ed water per plant every other day for some time now.

It was every 3 days but they got droopy on the 3rd day a few weeks ago so I went to every other day. I have accidentally overwatered to runoff. It smelled really bad... strong stuff. Hopefully I didn't wash away all the nutrients. I have Fox Farm's nutrient trio just in case I need to supplement.

I use my tap water (8.3-8.4 PH) corrected to 5.8-6.2 PH with Earth Juice Crystals. It's citric acid in crystal form. I only need to add a pinch to drop a gallon to the correct PH. (Learn more about adjusting pH in Super Soil)

Training

I topped all of them at the 4th node.
I then topped the 2 mains I created from the first topping at the 3rd node except the headband. It's sativa dominant so it stretched a lot more than the others. I topped her at the 2nd node. She also required an additional topping to stop her from getting out of control.
The others grew bushy and got the hint after the 2nd topping. The headband didn't get the memo, apparently but 3 times the charm. As you can tell I somehow managed an even canopy. The fuego in the back right is a bit stockier than her sisters because she's indica dominant.
Nebula: Aren't they beautiful? Once I saw them I knew I needed to share the pictures and information! You can check out the in-progress grow journal by Royal Nugs here!
