Growing Different Strains Together

Table of Contents

Many growers want to grow multiple strains together so that they have a greater variety of bud to choose from after harvest. Additionally, maximizing your grow space by growing many plants can increase overall yields!

Pros
  • Greater variety of strains after harvest

  • Growing many plants can increase yields
Cons
  • May take more time and effort to care for plants with differing needs

  • More likely to run into space or height issues if not paying attention

  • Plants may be ready to harvest at different times

Good planning goes a long way!

You will get more variety if you grow multiple strains at once, but sometimes it can get a little crowded!
Growing multiple strains can be done in an orderly way with some planning!
Strain Differences

Each strain has different tendencies when it comes to overall growth speed and estimated height. Some strains grow tall and stretchy, while other strains grow short and bushy. Additionally, different individual plants of the same strain may grow differently from each other!

Each cannabis strain has unique tendencies and characteristics. For example, these outdoor cannabis plants of different strains all turned different colors right before harvest!
A Tale of Two Strains (Indica vs Sativa)

One of the biggest challenges with growing several different strains of cannabis together is pace of growth. Different strains often grow at different rates in both the vegetative stage and especially during the flowering stretch (the quick growth that happens immediately after the switch to the flowering stage).

Let's see what happens when you grow an Indica plant next to a Sativa plant in the same setup with the same nutrients!

Left seedling is an Indica strain. Right is a Sativa. You can see the Sativa is already growing just a touch "stretchier" and less bushy than the Indica, but the difference is growth speeds will become a lot more apparent soon.
Even though both are in the same conditions, they look decidedly different as they continue growing. The Indica plant tends to grow very symmetrical and bushy, while the Sativa grows tall and wild.
Grower tried to rein in the Sativa by bending all the tallest stems over
Plants are now mostly flat again. But you'll see that the Sativa will have none of it!
A few weeks later, right before the switch to the flowering stage
The grower gives the two plants one last cleanup, then switches to a 12/12 light schedule by putting the grow light on a timer
Nearly a month later, the flowering stretch has mostly stopped. The Indica plant on the left has stretched far less than the long, lanky Sativa on the right. The plants may get a little taller, but by 4-6 weeks into the flowering stage they'll be focused almost completely on making buds.
The grower raised the shorter plant so it could be closer to the light. As is common with Indica plants, it was more sensitive to heat and light, and couldn't be kept as close to the HPS as the Sativa.
The grower harvested both plants at the same time even though they matured at somewhat different rates. The Indica plant was taken down a little late according to its trichomes, and the Sativa plant was taken down a little early. Which plant do you think ended up getting better yields?
In this case, the Sativa plant ended up getting almost 1.5x the yields of the smaller plant!

Indica Plant at Harvest (6.6 ounces)
Sativa Plant at Harvest (9.3 ounces)
The strain makes an insane difference when it comes to how your plants grow and how much they yield! These plants were grown in the exact same setup, with the same nutrients, grow light, etc, and came out completely differently from each other!

Reader Pictures!

Normally we pick just one reader for the "Trophy Pic of the Week" but we've been getting so many amazing pictures lately that we had to share more of them!

I hope you enjoy them as much as we have!

Before reading GWE...

(1st. Photo taken one and a half years ago) Plant grown from bag seed in a window to start, finished in my closet under a 600w grow light. Very proud.
I caught the grow bug, stumbled upon GWE, and this is what happened afterwards.

2nd photo taken today (3/8):
Grow method: followed all of your directions as best as I could. With your help I will continue to improve with time, as you can see my plant training needs to get much better!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU peace and love to you both

Lovely little Ladybug, hard at work, eating her daily fill. We bought 3,000 and now they are everywhere, but I wouldn't change a thing. I rather have beautiful harmless ladies around, then those damn microscopic whiteflies!! No insecticides of any kind until you research if they are safe for your ladies!! 3,000 dead Ladybugs is a lot to clean up!! Carol

Cfl-grown bagseed grow. This is my 7th grow total and I'm pretty certain I have maxed this 3' x1.5' tent.

My last grow with the same setup yielded me five dry ounces from one plant. This time I have six inside of milk jugs as you can see and I'm hoping for a total of 10 dry. 6 or less and I'm pretty sure I'll be disappointed ;-).

Either way I'm gaining tons of experience without much overall input for cost right now that is a shot of them at 28 days 12/12 22 days flowering.

Setup
  • Coco Coir
  • 250w cfl blue for veg
  • 600w hps red for flower
  • Exhale co2
  • Canna nutrients
Veg and flower rooms both going into week 5

Some were micro topped , super cropped

We call this strain "The Cross" as we crossed a Critical Mass male and a rare White Russian female.

The resulting phenos have a high bud to leaf ratio.

This is one way to increase yields develop a strain that will flower in the middle of a fan leaf!

We got this picture without any comment. I'm not sure why the plant is in the pool, but beautiful dog and beautiful plant!

Look Who's Talking

Hi there! Just felt the need to let you guys know what a huge help this site has been. I was frustrated by some other sites not really putting it all together or not mentioning LEDs at all. I do my research and thought I was prepared. NOW I'm prepared. Truly appreciate the love and attention you pay to your plants and your site. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
