Help, My Plants Are Too Tall!
by Nebula Haze

If your cannabis plants get too tall for your grow space, you're not alone; it's a really common problem for indoor growers. A cannabis plant's ability to grow very tall in a very short amount of time can (and frequently does) get growers into a lot of unexpected gardening trouble!

If you need help with a marijuana plant that's too tall, this article will teach you what to do!
What Can You Do When Marijuana Plants Start Getting Too Close to Your Grow Lights?
How to Help Too-Tall Cannabis Plants

One of the biggest risks of having too-tall plants is burning your buds by keeping them too close to the light. Even if the temperature is under control, your buds and leaves can still get bleached or burned if the grow lights are too close. This can especially common with LED grow lights, which usually run very cool even when they are extremely powerful. Most LED grow lights should be kept 18" or more from the tops of your plants. Learn how to avoid problems with LED grow lights.

With most other types of cannabis grow lights, including CFLs, T5s, LEC and MH/HPS, if the light is far enough away that the temperature feels comfortable to the back of your hand after 30 seconds, it's probably far enough to be comfortable to your plants. That being said, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with how far away to keep your grow lights from the tops of your plants.

This plant is too big already, and it hasn't even started flowering yet! What can you do?

Tips for Outdoor Growers

In the northern hemisphere, your outdoor plants should already be flowering (if not, they likely are getting light during their night period).

Now that buds are forming, it's a good idea to start thinking about preparing for harvest time. Harvest comes before you know it!

Typically outdoor cannabis plants are harvested in September or October, though the exact moment varies depending on the strain as well as your climate.

You want to harvest when the white hairs/pistils on the buds have mostly darkened and curled in. At this point the bud should look relatively solid as opposed to a bunch of hairs. The rules for when to harvest outdoors are similar to indoors, but outdoor buds tend to appear a bit leafier so they may not look exactly like indoor-grown bud. Check the trichomes for the most accurate harvest time.
Another tips for outdoor growers! If you know cool or rainy weather is coming, it's time to start checking your buds daily for signs of bugs or mold!

Bud rot is most common...
  • right before harvest (attacks the fattest colas and spreads quickly)
  • temperature is between 60-70°F
  • humidity is above 50%
  • lots of morning dew
  • rain, especially drizzly rain that lasts for more than one day
If it rains where you live, try to cover plants so they don't get wet when a storm is coming. Shake off any water if the plant does get wet from rain or dew - you don't want any water to sit on the plant if you can help it.

Most importantly, keep a close eye on your fattest colas for signs of leaves dying early or other unhealthy growth that seems out of place. Once bud rot gets one cola, it spreads quickly, but you can stop the infection if you catch it quickly and take the proper precautions!
