Your Cannabis Leaves Have Fingers! by Nebula Haze & Sirius Fourside |
We all know the standard image of the cannabis leaf, right? I think by this point we’ve all seen it about a million times imprinted on lighters, shirts, websites and just about everything else!
Now before you examine the picture too closely, answer this: How many fingers is a cannabis leaf supposed to have?
Don’t feel bad if you don’t know; I didn’t know off the top of my head and it’s kind of a trick question
anyway.
Cannabis leaves normally change the number of fingers (formally called ‘leaflets’, ‘segments’ or ‘lobes’) on their leaves as they mature. The number we’re familiar with seeing is the leaf with 7 fingers, but cannabis leaves can
naturally grow leaves with only a single finger up to leaves with as many as 13 fingers!
Cannabis leaves start smaller though, with fewer fingers. Here's what leaves generally look like from seedling to adult.
Seedling Two round cotyledon leaves, then two "real" (serrated) single-finger cannabis
leaves

|
The single-finger leaves expand, and the next set is usually 3-finger leaves Next, the cannabis plant will start making 5-finger leaves Finally, most cannabis plants stop at 7-finger leaves If you look closely at the above plant, you can see that some of the newer leaves on this plant actually have 9 fingers. Here's an example of a leaf that has grown 9
fingers:
9 Fingers
It's completely normal for cannabis plants to have 9, 11, or even 13 points on their fingers. This is just a natural way that
some leaves grow. It's also common to get single-blade leaves growing directly off your colas.
Sugar Leaves These single-finger leaves are often called
"sugar leaves" and they are much smaller than regular leaves, with a base tucked mostly inside the bud; they are completely normal on colas! Now That You Know What's
Normal...
These Sugar Leaves Have a Long Base Like Regular Adult Leaves Uncommon mutation - not like regular sugar leaves This Entire Plant Grew with Single-Finger Leaves Yet Another Strange Plant with Single-Finger Leaves Want even more strange leaves and plant oddities?

You've seen some weird mutations today, but there are strains with stabilized mutations! What does that mean?
That means you can grow plants that still smell and smoke like buds, but they look a lot less like your standard cannabis plant!

"I have never seen blooms like this. Can anyone tell me what this is?"

I informed the grower that this is a male plant...that's been taking steroids and hitting the gym a little too hard. Hopefully there were no female plants around because they are definitely
pollinated now.

doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
