Issue #397 - Sunday, November 24, 2019
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Cloning can be hit or miss if you have a mediocre technique, or it can be a sure thing if you're willing to pay for an expensive machine. We found the exception! This method of cloning is easy, works well, and is so cheap anyone with a plant can do it!
- Get a list of all the supplies you'll need to do this super-easy method of cloning. Spoiler Alert: The list is short.
- Everything in this week's trophy pics section looks sticky. Like, maybe too sticky? I just went and looked again; they're definitely too sticky.
- What the heck is "Australian Bastard Cannabis"? In short, it's a uniquely stealthy strain of hemp from our friends down under and it's pretty amazing. The goal is to breed high-THC cannabis strains with these ABC hemp plants until we have a THC-producing strain that looks nothing like weed as we know it. Check it out below!

How to Clone Weed
in a Cup of Water (Easy!) 🌱➡🥤
|
by Nebula Haze
Did you know you can clone cannabis by putting a piece of a branch in water? Just leave your cup in a warm sunny spot and wait 2-3 weeks for roots to form (some plants take longer or shorter).
|
Who doesn’t want a bunch of free plants when it’s this easy?
Each of these cuttings is an exact copy of the “mother” plant. As a result, you know that all these clones will grow pretty much the same as each other (and their mum). Cloning is also a great way to produce a lot of plants at once for basically free. If getting seeds is too expensive (and creating your own seeds isn’t feasible), then cloning can make growing a lot more affordable. Cloning via the “cup method” is easy and doesn’t take much space, effort or equipment.
This tutorial will teach you how to make rooted clones like this using a cup of water (it’s easy!)
You need very few tools to clone cannabis plants in a cup. Here's the complete supplies list!
- Cannabis plant to clone
- Water
- A cup
- Sharp scissors
The little plants in this picture used to be branches on the plants behind them. Each is a genetic copy of their “mother” plant.
Will using clear cups hurt the roots? I’ve tried cloning in clear and not-clear cups. As far as I can tell, it didn’t seem to make a difference in rooting rates. I would avoid letting direct light shine on the roots and make the water hot, but a little
ambient light doesn’t seem to bother them. After trying it both ways, I personally use clear cups so I can easily see the roots as they form, but any cup or container will work.
I’ve cloned in clear cups and opaque cups like this. Both seem to work great!
You can clone cannabis in basically any cup or container. This clone made roots in a glass beaker after being left on the kitchen counter.
The goal is to have a rooted clone by the end of the tutorial. Then I’ll show you how to plant your clone in soil, coco, or hydro.
Start cloning today and you'll see roots in just 2-3 weeks!

Australian Bastard Cannabis?
|
Australian Bastard Cannabis - or ABC for short - is a strain of wild hemp. ABC naturally grows all over Australia, but produces little THC in the wild. Now, cannabis breeders are attempting to hybridize it with high-THC cannabis strains to create an ultra-stealthy strain to grow outdoors.
Although there's still a lot of work to be done, the goal is to breed strains that look like the plants below yet produce bigger and higher-THC buds. That would make for some next-level camouflage!
Did you know? A similar breeding project with wild "Ruderalis" hemp plants from Siberia is what led to the creation of auto-flowering strains.
These incredible pictures sent in by AusBent420GraVy show examples of actual ABC plants. Although they may not look like cannabis plants, they're a type of hemp that can be bred directly with any strain of cannabis.
|
The leaves look reminiscent of clovers and are the result of a genetic mutation. The leaves may have adapted this way to help wild ABC hemp plants deal with the extreme climate of the Australian outback.

From AusBent420GraVy:
"They are a very fascinating plants to grow with a unrecognizable pattern of growth. I just finished crossing a Bubblegum mum with the ABC and also KO Kush and C99. This year over here in Australia the ABC strain has become popular again. I have seen many interesting mutant crosses. Some you would walk straight past and not even think its a cannabis plant. Really stealthy its also a nice mellow head stone when smoked and
makes really nice RSO."

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
