Issue #405 - Sunday, January 19, 2019
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- The ever-rising popularity of cannabis has resulted in literally hundreds of new strain breeders. With all the new competition and marketing available, who can really be trusted? Luckily, we know!
- Did you know that your plant may grow 3-finger leaves in response to light stress or unusual photoperiod lengths? See pictures and learn more!
- Trophy pics from LEDs and HPS grow lights are always fun for me because there's a hidden treasure in them all. They look good at first, but when you recolor them, you see a lot of what you were missing! I'm sure you can guess what's in today's trophy pics...

Which Strain Breeders Can I Trust?

Recommended Cannabis Breeders
Don't you want the best-of-the-best cannabis genetics for your next grow?
You can help ensure you get a great strain by starting with a great breeder. This article shares some of the most popular and reputable cannabis breeders, including information and recommended strains for each one. I’ve divided this tutorial into two parts. First I’ll give a list of recommended breeders and strains, then the second half will discuss the current state of genetics in the cannabis world.
This list considers...
- Potency - THC & CBD content, plus does it have the described effects?"
- Bag Appeal - Bud structure, color, density, smell"
- Consistency - Do strains grow the way the breeder says they will? Do plant characteristics vary a lot from plant to plant of the same strain?"
- Ease of growing - General hardiness of strains
- Reputation - Has this breeder earned an excellent reputation over the years?
What's Weird About These Plants?

Can you spot what's unusual in the above picture?

Look at the leaves closely....
Each leaf has only 3 points instead of the standard seven!
So what's causing the funny looking leaves?
I listed several possible causes below. In this case, the leaves appeared when the plants were moved from a gentle fluorescent light to a much more intense LED grow light. They's still growing fast and healthy (in fact, better than ever), so it's more of a curiosity than an actual problem for now.
Here's a list of common causes for 3-point leaves:
- Genetics - Some strains grow 3-point leaves no matter what you do
- Environmental stress - Extreme temperatures, underwatering, stagnant air, and other stresses can trigger this response
- Light stress - Especially a major change in light type or light levels (that's what happened here!)
- Unusual photoperiods - For example, if grow lights turn on and off at a new time, or you otherwise change your lighting schedule.
- Re-vegetating - If a plant start flowering (making buds) and then is switched back to the vegetative stage, it can cause leaves to grow with 3 points. Learn more about re-vegging.

"I found your fantastic and informative site almost a year ago when I decided to try growing my own plants. I've smoked since my teen years (now 57 yrs. old) all the while raising two girls, attaining two bachelor's, two master's degrees and two teaching certifications, then taught for 20 years.
My daughters, one who also smokes, have gone on to attain a master's degree too (one is currently working on hers). Obviously we have found that marijuana did not negatively affect us, just the opposite (we have all three graduated with honors, scholar awards, etc...the whole way thru). One daughter is an RN, the other a college professor (proud mama moment).
I have cringed so often with ridiculous people (even so-called experts) stating how marijuana causes lower IQ, low motivation, etc... But what bothers me more are all of the ignorant people that tout marijuana "cures" especially while I was going through breast cancer (surgery, chemo, radiation...now a pill a day) just last year. My reply? If marijuana cured cancer I would not have gotten it...considering I've smoked daily most of my life! I appreciate that
this site is truthful! Thank you very much. I will continue to read and use this informative site."

"These are pics from my third grow. Autoflowering strain called "Sin Trabajo". Muy bueno! Grown in coco with Vipar Spectra LED's and fed Canna Coco A+B. Shorties but yield was still over 2.5 oz."

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
