What You Need to Know About Synthetic PGRs
|
|
When you see ultra-dense cannabis buds with an odd orange or dull brown coloring, they may have been treated with a synthetic PGR in the flowering stage. No good!
What’s wrong with these beautiful dense “hardball” buds? They were grown with synthetic PGRs.
Here’s a comparison of PGR-treated buds vs. naturally grown buds. It’s normal for weed to have orange hairs, but PGR-buds are often completely engulfed by them.
PGR is short for “plant growth regulator”. PGRs act kind of like hormones and, and some plants naturally produce PGRs. However, synthetic (human-made) PGRs were developed in the early 1900s to promote dense flowers and keep plants unnaturally short and
bushy.
Two popular human-made PGRs are Paclobutrazol (Paclo) and Daminozide (also known as Alar).
Synthetic PGRs are still commonly used for grass on lawns (to keep it short) and ornamental plants (for uniform, weighty flowers), but many common synthetic PGRs were banned in the USA during the 1980s for use on any crops meant for human consumption.
Why? Because these systemic compounds remain in the plant tissue (regardless of flushing) and once consumed, there is evidence they cause cancer, liver damage, and other harmful effects in mammals.
The odd orange coloring is a sign these buds were grown with synthetic PGRs, which are bad for you!

Is it Time to Start Growing Organically?
|
Synthetic PGRs are scary and creepy. After today's article, I completely understand if you never want to give your plants anything from a bottle ever again.
If so, have you thought about growing organically?
|
It's surprisingly easy to start growing organically without any synthetic bottled nutrients or supplements.
You can even buy already-composted organic Super Soil for a "just add water" growing experience. Super Soil is a bit pricey to buy online, but you can make it "dirt cheap" (sorry) by composting at home.
LEDs vs LECs Grow Journal Update
|
Update: LEDs vs LECs grow journal
In these pictures, both tents are on day 36 of a 12/12 light schedule. These strains need a total of 70-80 days of flowering before they're ready to harvest, so we're about halfway through the flowering stage!
Since the clones are grown in otherwise identical conditions, any bud differences can be attributed to the different grow lights.
|
Buds are getting fat under the LEDs! The buds on the edges of the LED tent appear to be significantly bigger than the buds near the edges of the LEC tent, especially the Zweet Inzanity plant on the left.
Although many of the LED buds seem wider, the LEC buds are longer. In my experience, long buds are like sleepers. Bud length increases your final weight by a surprising amount. Because of that, I am still not sure which tent will produce the best yields.
The Mandarin Cookies in my LEC tent is the sparkle monster of the garden. Although all the LEC buds are extra frosty, no other plant comes close to this trichome coverage.

I feel pretty confident both tents will yield plenty with great bud quality, so I'm starting to get curious about the lab test results for terpene and cannabinoid levels after harvest. What are the differences in smell, if any? My nose gets totally overloaded when I open the tents, so I have no idea which one smells more! Could extra trichome coverage result in greater potency, or is it just a visual difference?
Wait, don't extra trichomes always mean increased THC?
Not necessarily.
Some high-CBD or low-THC strains get incredibly sparkly, but don't have strong perceived "potency" because the THC has been bred out. You can't look at buds and accurately guess their potency.
In fact, in my last grow the most trichome-covered buds were from two OG Kush Auto plants by Ethos Genetics (pictured here)
These two OG Kush Auto plants by Ethos Genetics produced buds that were extremely sparkly and smelled incredible, yet felt weak to smoke
These buds measured at about 14% THC at the lab, which gave them the lowest THC percentage of all 16 plants grown and tested at the same time. In smoke tests, the buds also felt the weakest.
All that being said, a high level of trichome coverage usually takes dedicated breeding over generations. It's generally a good sign to see trichomes...
But... never read a bud by its trichomes!
Many buds feel extremely potent regardless of trichome coverage and vice versa! "Sparkly" strains are extremely popular in America but strains developed in other parts of the world usually don't sparkle as much. Many of my favorite strains are not sparkle monsters. For example, Pineapple Chunk produces incredible smells and effects,
but buds have a typical amount of trichome coverage.
In the end, I always recommend choosing a strain based on bud effects, not appearance!

Hi Nebula (and pals),
After oh, about a decade of not doing this, I'm getting back into it. I've been keeping my thumb green with general gardening for vegetables outdoors, but I'm very excited to be returning to the more controlled indoor grow.
Further, in doing this, I am determined to correct some mistakes I had previously made in technique and methods. To that end, more knowledge is a very good thing, and your site has been an amazing resource. I appreciate you sharing the benefits of your experience here, and I can't wait to get going (growing!) again. Thanks!
- Alex

Wow! What an awesome article you’ve written Nebula❤️ ... it couldn’t have gotten to me at a better time because I’ve been so discouraged lately that I too have been thinking of giving up too. This post restores my enthusiasm for continuing to grow.
Thank you so much!
Kindly,
Brian
I have been there, Brian! I actually wrote the article after a plant hermed on me last week. Plant problems can be maddening >.< ~Nebula
