When Is My Weed Ready to Harvest?

This harvest tutorial is part of our “how to harvest cannabis” series:
Intro: When to Harvest Cannabis (for highest potency)
When should we harvest the buds from a cannabis plant? That is the eternal question… I’m sure the answer we’re all thinking is “Not soon enough!”
Unfortunately for us impatient growers, harvesting at the right time is just as important as how you grow the plant. Harvest too soon and you lose potency and cannabis yields; too late and you can end up making a batch of sleep medicine.
These 6 buds are in the harvest window. Buds are ready to harvest when most of the “hairs” have darkened and curled in and you can see the solid bud underneath.
Choose the most precise harvest time by looking at glittery trichomes under a magnifier.
Trichome heads start out clear and glassy. At this point, buds are not very potent.
As buds mature, trichome heads turn milky white. They kind of look like plastic. These white trichome heads indicate the highest level of THC and CBD.
If given more time, white trichome heads turn amber/golden (for most strains). Amber trichomes have less THC but produce more of a relaxing/body/anti-anxiety effect.
Quick Summary: Buds are ready to harvest when hairs have darkened and curled in, revealing the solid bud underneath. Harvest buds on the early side for more of an “up” mental/psychoactive effect (trichome heads appear milky white under a magnifier).
If buds are allowed to continue maturing, the white trichomes begin to turn amber/golden. The greater the number of amber trichomes, the more buds produce a “down” body/couchlock effect.

What's the best way to look at trichomes up close?
Last year, Sirius decided to find the best/easiest way to look at trichomes under magnification. He tested dozens of different magnifiers, jeweler's loupes, USB microscopes, and more, then put together a complete guide.
Learn about the most common types of magnifiers, and see his pick for each type (alongside pictures so you can see for yourself).

LEDs vs LECs Grow Journal

Weigh-in and bud pics! All plants were grown in a 2'x4'x6' grow tent in 3-gallon fabric pots.
Drum roll...
- Total 9.34 oz
- 1.02 g/watt
- Total 7.48 oz
- 0.67 g/watt
The LEDs won for weight! They used less electricity and produced significantly more bud.
I ran out of time this week but I promise to post bud pictures for all 10 plants next week so you can compare how buds grew differently under the LEDs vs the LECs. The clones grew surprisingly similar-looking buds but there are some differences including color. I wait for buds to cure at least 2 weeks before smoking them, but I should have smoke tests for you next week, too!
|
I will also get all buds tested for terpenes and cannabinoids. Since the plants were clones and grown in the same conditions, any differences should be the result of the grow lights. It'll be interesting to see how the buds compare. I'm saving up to get the tests
done next month :)

"Thank you for your amazing website. The information is extremely helpful. I have looked at many different sites and yours is by far the best. The content is amazing, as is they way you break down the information.
I'm now in week three flowering of my first indoor grown and thanks to your guidance and amazing articles, my results so far are incredible. Just thoroughly read about defoliation, as my girls were much too bushy.
I followed your suggestions and guidelines (though I did miss the vegetative defoliation) and the plants seem to be thriving with very little if any signs of stress.
Thank you again!!!"
~Ashton
Plants thriving with no signs of stress is called a good job. Glad we could help! 👍 ~Sirius

"Love reading your articles and learning everything I can about growing. I saw this quote in the Michigan Bulb catalog and thought of you guys:
"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must also have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.""

I love it! ~Nebula

"Here’s a few pics of my AK-47 seedling from Humboldt seed company.[...] As you can see, she’s looking pretty healthy and nodes are very close. Third leaf coming and only about 2 inches tall"
~Dominic8189
That's a very photogenic seedling. That plant has a bright future ahead of it! ~Sirius

That description kinda trails off at the end. Did...did that humongous plant write this? 😨 ~Sirius

"I left them in my garage to dry in darkness before I harvest and as I was trimming the big leaves I noticed little white bugs under but they dont look alive."

Those are aphids in the nymph stage of their lifecycle! Ladybugs are a cute and natural way to get rid of these pests. For other solutions, check out this page: GWE's Aphid page
