Dear Fellow Grower,
Happy 4/20 tomorrow everyone! Take a moment to sit back, relax, and let your worries melt away for a day :)
In today's issue...
- Cannabis growers the world over have lived in fear of the dreaded Tobacco Mosiac Virus (TMV). But it is really what we think it is? Check out today's article that will make you question what you know about TMV!
- LED vs LEC grow lights: How do buds differ? Check out pictures today, and next week the lab results will be in so we can finally find out the differences in cannabinoid and terpene levels!
- Cannabis plants in the beautiful outdoors. Beautiful cannabis plants indoors. No matter where they are in this week's trophy pics, the plants are all beautiful!
- We were asked to identify the strain of a gorgeous cannabis plant. Can we do it? See below for a (possibly) surprising answer!
- Stay safe and healthy! 💚&🌳

Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) -
Not what we thought it was?! 🔬👩🔬

Many cannabis growers believe the following markings indicate TMV
Can Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) be caught by cannabis plants? Some growers believe TMV can infect weed, yet actual evidence of cannabis transmission is hard to come by.
What is Tobacco Mosaic Virus anyway? TMV is commonly found in tobacco plants and causes splotchy or twisted leaves, strange mottling symptoms (a “mosaic”), slowed growth, and reduced yields. It has spread to several other species of plants besides tobacco, and some people believe cannabis plants may be able to catch it, too.
Note: TMV won’t hurt you, but plants that get infected may not grow as fast or yield as well as they could have.
Did you Know? TMV was the first virus ever to be discovered.
TMV was first identified in tobacco plants in 1892 but is now known to infect at least 125 species of plants, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and many types of flowers. It can live in the soil
but mainly travels from plant to plant by direct contact. It can also be transferred from one plant to another via your hands. Some growers have claimed to see mottled leaves after exposing their plants to tobacco.
Here’s a pic of a tobacco plant with confirmed TMV – the mottled leaves are the main symptom of the virus besides overall slow growth.
Here’s a leaf from a squash plant that has it
TMV can attack a wide range of plants, but can it spread to our beloved herb marijuana? And if it can, what do you do to prevent it?

LEDs vs LECs Grow Journal
|

Check out the full harvest above, including the samples that just got sent to the lab, and the huge bag of trim! The total harvest for both lights was 16.82 oz (just over a pound) of premium flower, plus 6.7 oz of high quality trim that's getting turned into oil. I'll be publishing the full grow journal in a few weeks, but here's some bud pictures.
Here are the final yields in case you missed it last week:
- Total 9.34 oz
- 1.02 g/watt
- Total 7.48 oz
- 0.67 g/watt
Plus 6.7 oz trim between both tents (I didn't think to keep the trim separated, though I'd guess about 2/3 of the trim came from the 315 LEC tent).
The samples have been sent out to the lab so I should have the cannabinoid and terpene results next week for you. Until then, here are some bud pictures to compare between the two lights.

Overall they look pretty similar to me. I can't wait to get the lab results back!

After wading through pages and pages of conflicting and complicated info, I found your site. THIS is what I was looking for. It's perfect. When a picture or illustration is needed, you provide it. Very well-written, impressive information with links, not too complicated.
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much. I'll be a regular here."

Help! What's Wrong with My Plant?!
|
|
A grower sent in the picture above with the following question:
"Can anyone please help me identify the strain?
It was a gift..but the magenta coloured pistils are so beautiful, I would love to know what strain this is? I am from Cape Town in South Africa. My girl has been growing happily outside, in sunny summer conditions."
~Spitfire
-----
So, what strain is it? We don't know!
Believe it or not, it's nearly impossible to identify a strain unless it has unique characteristics such as with the strains "Ducksfoot" or "Dr.Grinspoon". This plant has nice pistil color, but there are other strains that do this exact thing.
This problem gets even worse, though. Literally anyone can name a strain anything they want. In fact, some people have renamed strains that already exist. That means you could be smoking a strain called "Tropical Cerebrum Smasher" that's actually just "Northern Lights".
There's also the concept of "crosses". It's become popular for growers to cross genetics from two existing strains to make a new "cross" which will need a new name. The result is a new plant with a new strain name, but with characteristics that resembles that of at least two other strains.
Confusing right? There are even more reasons strain identification by sight isn't really a thing, but we'll stop here. 😂
In short: The nature of "strain names" makes it nearly impossible to identify a cannabis strain by sight. 🤷♂️ That's a pretty plant, though!

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
