LEC vs LED Grow Lights:
Side-by-Side Journal 💡🆚💡
|
Â
Â
by Nebula Haze
Â
Â
This grow journal features two indoor cannabis gardens that are identical except for one thing: the grow light! See a match-up between LEDs vs LEC grow lights.
Â
(If you’re unfamiliar, LEC is a brand name by Sun System. LECs are also known as CMH grow lights)
Â
I have to admit, I was surprised by the results. I compiled these live grow journal entries from my Instagram account and excerpts from this newsletter. I also included some interesting comments I received along the way. I hope you enjoy 🙂

Some of the 315 LEC Buds
Grow Experiment Details & Setup
Â
Quick Summary
Â
- Each garden uses this 2’x4’x6′ grow tent
- Grow medium: Mother Earth Coco + Perlite Mix
- Containers: 3-gallon Fabric Pots
- Nutrients: General Hydroponics Flora trio + Calimagic
- Plants are clones (6 different strains)
6 Mom Plants with All their Clones (I chose two matching clones from each plant for the experiment)
Here are the two sets of clones after they were put in the tents. Pretty well matched, right?
A tale of two tents (left tent is LED, right tent is 315 LEC)
Super Soil vs Coco Coir Experiment
|
Â
The LED vs LEC grow is finally over, and now it's time to think about the next side-by-side experiment! Last week I asked what you wanted to see next and the response was overwhelmingly...
Â
Super Soil vs Coco Coir! I also think this would be really cool to test out so I'm excited that's what you picked. I wonder which will grow faster, yield more, and produce better buds. Will there be a clear winner, or a mix of results?
|
Coco Coir - A combination of of perlite and coconut husks to make happy roots and fast-growing plants.
Here is the proposed setup:
- Two 2'x4'x6' grow tents - same tents as the last experiment
- Two LED grow lights - Both tents will be using an Electric Sky ES300 LED grow light (we were blown away by the V1 of these lights last year, and the new V2 is even better)
- Super Soil Details
- Coco Coir Details
- Mother Earth Coco plus Perlite potting mix
- Flora trio + Calimagic as nutrients
- Coco Coir tutorial
- Containers - 5-Gallon Fabric Pots
- Clones (4 Strains) - I'm currently growing out mother plants. I will take multiple clones of each one and use the best matched pair for the side-by-side experiment.
However, I need your help with something. I'm trying to decide which strains to use for the super soil vs coco coir experiment. The plan is to have 4 plants in each tent.
Â
Which 4 strains would you pick out of these?
- Pineapple Chunk - smells divine, dense buds, beautiful bud structure
- Power Africa - South African genetics with unique effects, a hint of skunk, and great bud density
- Gelat.OG - Purple-tinted buds with the most popular west coast genetics
- Pacific Punch - Super sparkly clone from last grow
- Gorilla Zkittles - A mix of the legendary Gorilla Glue #4 and trendy Zkittlez strain
- Tropicanna Banana - One of the students from our online grow course grew this strain out beautifully and I got jealous!
- Critical Purple Kush - Fruity, purple, and sparkly
- Peyote Critical - Buds are super potent, beautiful, and smell amazing!
Note: Pineapple Chunk, Tropicanna Banana, and Gorilla Zkittles are currently sold out. This is due to Covid-19 closures in Spain. According to the breeder they will be back in stock as soon as possible.
Â
Click reply and let us know the 4 strains you'd most like to see! This experiment is for you :)

Why Are My Leaf Edges Pointing Up?
|
|
Â
Got spiky leaves?
Â
If you're seeing the edges of your leaves pointed up like the picture, there are 3 common causes:
- Water stress - For example overwatering or under watering. Plants are typically also droopy if they're suffering from water stress.
- Heat stress - plants don't like when it's too hot. Many plants get stressed above 85F (30C), though certain strains from cold climates may start showing symptoms above 80F (27C).Â
- Light stress - typically caused when the grow light is too close. Other common symptoms of light stress include yellow leaf tips, bleached leaves near the light, and leaves pointed up like they're "praying".Â
If your other plants seem fine, and the leaf edges pointing up is the only symptom, you probably don't need to worry. Most plants can handle a little stress and you don't want to make unnecessary big changes for one or two finicky leaves.
Â
Just keep an eye out to make sure the leaves aren't getting damaged. If you start seeing discoloration such as brown spots, yellow leaf tips, or bleaching, don't ignore it. Fix the environmental problem.
Â
If you're not sure what's wrong, use our plant doctor for help diagnosing your sick plant.

Thanks, that means a lot! The first grow is the scariest, so I'm glad we were able to help make it a little easier. Don't hesitate to send us pictures of your plants! We'd love to see them. ~Nebula

"2nd grow learned all here" ~Londosia
Â
Â
Twinkle-tastic! This bud is absolutely captivating. ~Nebula
|
"These flowers look nothing like the others on the plant." ~Walt
Â
Wow, what a cool bud mutation! They look like whorled buds. I saw one of these when I first started growing and didn't realize what it was. I forgot all about it until I saw this pic. I'll add this to our mutation page this week. Anyone else see mutated buds like this? Hit reply and send it
in! ~Nebula
It's like the bud started dividing and gave up partway.
"One of my three cats adores the lower leaves. The other two show no interest, but they are all from the same family! An excellent defoliator!" ~Ciaran
Â
This is in response to last week's article on cats eating leaves. What a great picture with your beautiful cat eying those leaves. Like you won't notice. I love how cats will "hide" even though their faces are still showing :) ~Nebula
