Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Topping a photoperiod plant is as easy as it is rewarding, but can you top an autoflowering cannabis plant? In short: Yes, and we're going to give you all the info you need to make sure everything goes perfectly!
- Are sugar leaves good to smoke? Some growers trim off the sparkly leaves growing right next to buds, others don't. Learn what you should do!
- What's the highest yielding auto-flowering strain? Topping and training aren't the only factors that affect autoflowering yields. Discover what to look for and get a list of recommended strains.
- A grower sent in too many good pics and I couldn't pick between them...what a cool problem to have! Also, check out a mutation that most growers would love to see on their plants.

Can I top an auto-flowering cannabis plant? 🌲✂️➡🌳
|
|
In short, Yes. Healthy auto-flowering plants respond well to being topped as long as they have at least 4-5 sets of leaves and haven’t
started making buds yet. Usually around the end of week 3. Avoid topping a flowering or slow-growing plant to prevent the chance of stunting.
When it comes to growing auto-flowering cannabis strains, there is a lot of controversy about whether they are compatible with the cannabis training technique known as topping (cutting off the
tip of the plant while it’s young to improve plant structure and yields). This is because topping an autoflowering plant can go wrong if you don’t do it right.
Topping the right way helps keep autoflowering plants short and bushy with many buds
But be careful! This autoflowering plant was slow-growing and got topped after buds started forming. As a result, it stayed small and stunted.
Autoflowering plants can produce a sea of fat buds when topped properly. This helps maximize yields under a grow light.
Autoflowering plants can still produce great yields without topping, but untopped plants are more likely to get tall and usually only grow one main bud
Many growers say you should never top an auto-flowering plant, while others claim they can top their autos without a problem. How can there be such a big difference in results between different growers? Well, here’s the big thing you need to
know...
Topping auto-flowering cannabis strains is often discouraged because...
Can You Smoke Sugar Leaves?
|
|
The “sugar” on sugar leaves is actually THC-filled trichomes!
Sugar leaves are the small single-finger leaves that grow out of your cannabis buds during the flowering stage. They are called “sugar leaves” because these leaves are often covered in sparkly trichomes which look like a dusting of sugar.
The amount of trichomes on the sugar leaves is related to strain. Some strains don’t produce a lot of trichomes even on buds, while others produce so many they spill onto all of the nearby leaves.
Although trichomes are a good thing because they carry cannabinoids like THC, some strains without many trichomes are still very potent because cannabinoids are also contained in the buds themselves. Sativa and Haze strains in particular often don’t have as many trichomes on the outside as indica-leaning strains, but are still incredibly potent!
|
This Lambsbread bud doesn’t have a whole lot of trichomes, yet it still has extremely powerful effects!
But when strains do produce a lot of trichomes on the sugar leaves, should you smoke them or trim them off?
What's the Highest Yielding Autoflowering Strain?
|
|
Autoflowering plants produce excellent yields when you choose the right strains
Auto-flowering strains are kind of like the “houseplant” version of weed. I’m a big fan of autoflowering cannabis strains for first-time growers, but also for anyone who wants to achieve a lot of potent buds in a short amount of time with a lot of flexibility. Auto-flowering strain options today are enormous, and there is an autoflowering strain that will satisfy almost any grower’s needs.

"I have to tell you that I thought making bubble hash would be much more difficult than it sounded, BUT, I followed your directions and am now smiling. I did buy the 'washing machine' which made things a lot easier once I
managed to get my hands on it.
I processed 4 oz. of trim and small buds and since I haven't been able to weigh the hash yet, I don't know the precise yield but I am surprised at the quantity on the screens. Can't wait to try it!"

"This is a good mutation the branches split into two kolas same plant both pictures."
~oldjarhead100
Now this is a mutation I would want in my plants, especially autos. Note how the plant looks normal from this angle...
...but if you turn it to the side, it topped itself and made an additional cola with no work on behalf of the grower. If this mutation was stabilized, I bet you'd start seeing it in a ton of new strains. One can only

Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
