Issue #425 - Sunday, June 7, 2020
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- "12/12 from seed" is the practice of starting a cannabis seed on a flowering light schedule from the very beginning. Growers do this to save time, but is it actually worth doing?
- What's a good setup for a "micro grow"? If you want a small stealthy garden that still gets good yields, you need the right setup. Check out the awesome "mini tent" and HLG 65W LED I've been using!
- A cabinet full of beer bottle-sized colas. Crystal-clear, crisp HD pictures of beautiful vegetating plants. Check out these trophy pics and get a quick dose of calm & happy!
- What do you do if your cannabis plant decides to start growing its own mushrooms? Seriously, that's a thing!

Is 12-12 From Seed Worth It?

Will 12/12 from seed give you huge yields? In a word, no… but there are benefits to initiating the flowering stage as soon as possible. Giving a 12/12 light schedule from seed is a great way to create tiny “bud stick” plants, which may be perfect for a small stealthy garden. When
modified slightly, the same basic technique can create bigger plants and bigger yields while adding little to no extra time before harvest. And then there is the matter of genetics. Certain strains give better results than others.
This creates small “bud stick” plants that are typically ready to harvest in 3-4 months. Check out this beautiful example of 12/12 from seed by a grower named Fuel.
If you haven’t heard this term before, “12/12 from seed” means giving your cannabis seedling 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark each day from the moment of germination. Providing a 12/12 light schedule initiates the flowering stage and causes cannabis plants to start making buds. The idea of this technique is to get seedlings to start flowering as quickly as possible to reduce the time to harvest. Once a plant has started flowering, most strains are ready to harvest within 12 weeks. The sooner you get a plant to start flowering, the sooner you get to harvest.
There's just one major problem....
Mini Tents Are So Much Fun :)

Can you flower cannabis plants in a tiny space? Yes!
|
I had 6 bonsai mom plants vegetating in this waist-high 2'x2'x3' grow tent but there was still a little room left. I added a few extra autoflowering plants in solo cups to fill in the spaces. This picture is from 2 weeks ago, when the autoflowering plants were 6 weeks old.
Even though the tent is getting an 18/6 light schedule for the photoperiod moms, the autoflowering plants make buds regardless of light schedule. Here's a side view so you can see how the moms and solo cup plants are all mixed in with each other:
The grow light is a tiny HLG 65W LED grow light in this setup. I'm pretty impressed at the bud size on the autoflowering plants considering there's 12 plants in total. That means each plant is only getting about 6 watts of light to itself!
What can you accomplish with 6W of light from a good LED? Check it out! Here are two of the autoflowering solo cup plants that were harvested this week.
Zkittlez Auto by Seedsman - I somehow missed topping this one and didn't realize until after it started flowering, so I left it alone. That's why it's one long stick :)
The Zkittlez buds are extra beautiful. Here's that one again in natural light
I think after drying that these solo cup plants will likely produce about a 1/4 ounce of buds each. With 6 solo cup plants, that's basically a free 1.5 ounces of weed just from sticking a few solo cup plants in with my moms!
Here are those plants drying. Talk about the cutest little harvest ever!
4 solo cup plants left to go. Growing in solo cups is not the most efficient way to grow, but it sure is fun! If I ever end up with extra autoflowering seedlings and extra room in a tent, I'm going to do exactly this again.
It seems like autoflowering plants mature faster in small pots compared to the same strain in big pots. It took just under 2 months from seed to harvest for these two plants. The matching autoflowering plants of the same strain in 3-gallon pots still have a few more weeks to go. It could also be that the light in the mini tent contains more blue (4000k spectrum), since this is actually a vegetative tent. I've noticed buds seem to mature faster under light with
more blue in the spectrum.
While I'm talking about the sister autoflowering plants, here's a quick peek of them in my bigger tent under a 250W red/flowering (2700k) light. They still have a while to go before harvest except that gorgeous purple plant (Pink Kush CBD 30:1) which is likely coming down this week :)
I harvested the solo cup White Widow Max Auto plant this week,
but the big one in the back middle of this tent is a monster! It's sucking up nutrients faster than any of the other plants. You can tell because it's starting to lose its bottom leaves early and just seems a bit pale overall on the top leaves that are working the hardest.
There are no other nutrient deficiencies, which likely means the plant wants more nutrients overall. This is really common when you have a plant that's producing huge buds like this one. I bumped up the nutrients for this plant but I will keep a close eye on it to
see if it gets nutrient burn (which would mean I gave too high levels of nutrients) or keeps yellowing from the bottom (it wants even more nutrients).
I just thought I'd share in case you ever notice this happening on one of your flowering plants that's still got several weeks to go (notice how most of the hairs on the buds are still white and sticking out). I've ignored this symptom in the past and it reduces the yields overall :)

"Hi Nebula! 1st time grower here and your website has helped A LOT. It took me a while to dial in this geo-ponics system I Frankensteined together from a company called Growbox.
I think I went a little crazy with training but the result in the pictures. I have a Cali Lightworks solar extreme 500 in a 32"x32"x60" high tent. I don't know what these are, bag seeds. Pretty sure that 4 are Indica/hybrids and one is a Sativa that I didn't include.
A little more height then going to flowering. Advice?"

"U ever seen that shit before? Shrooms growing out the bottom of the bucket! Lol!"
~Allen
Although I haven't seen this in particular, we've seen mushrooms growing from the side of a fabric pot.
In that case (and this one), the issue is too much moisture. So, if you see your plant growing mushrooms, remember: it's a watering or humidity issue! 👍 ~Sirius
