Issue #431 - Sunday, July 19, 2020
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- How important are the roots of your plant? They're super important, all-important! In fact, they're the most important part of your plant! They're just too humble to brag about it...
- Have you ever grown a strain so good you can't shut up about it? I'm not going to say who, but someone here at GrowWeedEasy.com won't stop talking about the strain we're featuring below!
- We've got problematically large colas, growers hiding behind massive plants, and a beautiful grow from Greece. Just when I think these trophy pics will stop getting crazy, I learn not to doubt the awesomeness of home growers!

Roots:
The Most Important Part of Your Plant! 🌱👑🌳
|
We all know that buds grow on the top side of a cannabis plant. That’s enough reason for many of us to think that the top half of the plant is ‘the important part’.
But the roots of a cannabis plant are the real workforce behind its success. They might not be directly responsible for growing buds, but they are responsible for many processes that allow bud growth to happen!
|
If the flowers/bud of a cannabis plant are movie stars (let’s be honest, bud is the star of the show), then your cannabis plants’ roots would be all the hardworking people behind the scenes who do the editing, cinematography, sound, and lighting. In fact, a plant with a healthy root system can lose its leaves and still recover to an extent. But a plant with a healthy leaf system has no chance if it loses its roots.
Here’s what healthy roots look like without soil/coco coir on them – cream-colored or white, with no brown or sliminess
(Click the picture below to see an animated version [3Mb .gif])
Today we’re going to show you how to protect your plants’ lovely roots, and your plant will pay you back in sticky home-grown bud!
Note: This is a simplified version of how a plant’s roots work; they actually do some crazy stuff!
What Roots Do for Your Cannabis Plant
Roots are the base of your plants’ wicking system
In a cannabis plant, the path from a root-to-leaf is like a straw. Water transpires from leaves which creates suction, and this helps pull water through the roots, up through the stem, and back into leaves. This is a super-efficient, low-energy way for plants to get moisture without having to take in as much water through its leaves. However, as plants get larger, their demand for water becomes more than the leaves can handle by themselves. Additionally, your plants will need water to form their
first leaves, and that water comes from the plants first root.
Roots Are Necessary to Uptake Nutrients
The roots of a cannabis plant are the main site where nutrient uptake occurs. This means that your roots are the gatekeeper for most of the nutrients your plant gets, and the health of your roots determines how much (if any) of your nutrients are being used.
The leaves of a cannabis plant can also take in nutrients; growers can do this through a method called ‘foliar feeding’, where a nutrient solution is applied directly to the leaves.
The Roots Are the Most Important Part of Your Cannabis Plant
What is a ‘vital organ’? It’s an organ that’s absolutely vital to the life of the organism it inhabits. To a cannabis plant, the roots are its vital ‘organ’.
When a cannabis plant isn’t getting enough nutrients, it’s leaves/stems get damaged, but the roots are left alone. When a plant gets too many nutrients, the leaves get nutrient burn, but the roots are left alone. When a cannabis plant gets overwatered…you guessed it,
the leaves/stems are what suffer.
Think of the leaves of a cannabis plant as the first line of defense against less-than-perfect conditions. The leaves can also act as backup systems for a few of the functions the roots perform, such as nutrient/water uptake. But since cannabis plants already have a primary method of water/nutrient delivery (that has better protection by being underground), the leaves become expendable in hard times.
That was more than half of the article!

I think Nebula grew this strain based purely on the strength of the strain name and popularity. I wasn't convinced, but after smoking the harvest, I'm a believer. Here are a few cool things we noticed about this strain:
- Easy to grow, not too picky
- Good yields even though it had a non-prime spot (to the side)
- Good trichome coverage
- Smells delicious but not overpowering: sharp, sweet, pine, not too skunky, very pleasant smell
- Ready to harvest in less than 3 months

"Hey folks,
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your website. As a first time grower, I've really lucked out finding you. I have learned so much which has saved me a lot of aggravation with failures with everything from germinating, planting, transplanting, cloning, mainlining all the way to now ready to harvest my first plant. By researching and studying it all on your website for indoor as well as outdoor grows, everything is working out very well.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us beginners to give us an easier chance for success on our grows."

Let us know how that first harvest goes! 👍 ~Sirius

"Hello to the GROWWEEDEASY team!!
I am just sending you my love and my respect for what you guys are doing!
Your site is a never-ending info giver and it has helped me A LOT since I decided to start growing weed for my personal use. Its clearly written, understandable with lots of examples and tips. Its my grow buddy, which i consult every time a run into a problem or want to do something new. You guys have never let me down as far as the growing techniques and the symptoms/actions about sick/stressed plants!
Unfortunately I live in Greece, where the law is still against us, so i run a (pretty decent) micro set up with lots of CFLs. My average yield is around 100-150g per grow with 200-250w of CFLs. Every grow usually takes up to 3 months from seed to harvest (coco its the way to go!) and i havent spent a single EURO to buy weed for the last 4-5 years. I am so excited that i can grow my own medicine, its super fun and easy (well, you made it happen!) and the most
intriguing part is the fact that i have to provide the right environment (in each stage) for the plant to grow healthy and strong!!!
I will try to send you some photos in the future (do not expect much, its a micro grow), just to make you smile with my effort! <3 <3
I bow to the grow KINGS, big hugs and kisses from Greece and everytime i light up a joint i ll think of you! <3"

You're leading the way for other growers in Greece! Well done and I can't wait to see how your grow ends! ~Sirius

This girl is flowering for about 5weeks (Day 35 of FLR) and still has a long way to go! Its a bag seed found some years ago (not a quality one) and i have no clue about what strain its is!
I'll definitely send you some photos just before harvest. I would love to have your opinion about this girl, and i hope that at least i made you smile:)"

I already love it. Can't wait to see how it turns out! 👍 ~Sirius

"Hi Nebula and Sirius,
Here is a picture of my Aurora Indica mom grown in a 5-gallon DWC bucket. Grown with GH Flora trio. She will be put in her own 4' x 4' tent soon and scrog netted for flowering. Wanted to share my progress as I've learned mostly everything from you both about growing cannabis. Thank you! ✌"

That plant is monstrous! But it's also lush, vibrant, and healthy. A+! Also, does anyone else hear "Ta-da!" when they see this picture? ~Sirius
