Issue #445 - Sunday, October 25, 2020
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- What is a bonsai mother plant? Imagine a tiny cannabis plant that keeps making tiny copies of itself for as long as you want it to. The copies retain the same characteristics as the mother because they're clones, except you have them on demand! Trust me, it's awesome.
- Check out Nebula's "Coco vs Soil" side-by-side grow journal! See how some of the soil plants are turning purple while the coco buds are developing differently.
- In nine days, 7 U.S. states will vote on weed legalization. If you're a registered voter in Arizona, California, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, South Dakota, or Texas, we need your help to legalize
weed for more people! Everyone deserves to be able to grow their own weed.
- The theme for this week's trophy pics is "Respectful Nod Elicitors". You'll look at these pictures, consider them for a few seconds, and feel compelled to gently nod in respect for the growers' efforts. Don't fight the nod, it's a good thing!

How to Create a Bonsai Mother for Unlimited Clones 👩👧➕👩🔬➡👩👧👧
|
by Oldtimer1 (foreward and adaptation by Nebula Haze)
|
This marijuana grow tutorial is a condensed version of the classic “How to Keep a Bonsai Mum” article written by the legendary Oldtimer1. Although the original article was published in
2000, this bonsai training method recently resurfaced and has become popular for hobbyist cannabis growers without a lot of space. With so many people growing at home these days, this technique is more useful now than ever.
These 8-month-old bonsai mother plants are based on this tutorial. In addition to the sunny window, a lightbulb shines nearby for 14+ hours a day to keep them in the vegetative stage. An easy and fun way to hold onto genetics! ~Nebula

This tutorial will teach you how to turn a cannabis plant into a bonsai mother (giving you access to unlimited free clones!)
But what is a mother plant? The most common reason growers keep “mothers” is to save money by producing new cannabis plants for free (or at least basically free).
Instead of having to pay for each seed from a seed bank, a mother plant can be used to create almost unlimited new clones of itself. In addition to not costing anything, new clones are more predictable than seeds from random crosses. Seeds carry a mix of traits from both parent plants, while each clone consistently grows just like the mother.
What I'm Growing Right Now
|
|
I'm currently doing a side-by-side experiment with clones in coco coir (top) vs soil (bottom). The order from left to right in each tent is Power Africa (looks to be a huge yielder in soil), Peyote Critical (purple buds in
soil), and Critical Purple Kush (no signs of purple yet on either).
The soil buds appear to be bigger and more colorful, while the coco buds are longer and have greater trichome coverage on the leaves.
Both tents are using an Electric Sky ES300 LED grow light kept about 24" away. This is my first time using the new "V2" version of the ES300 and the plants are responding beautifully.
Today I noticed something interesting. The Peyote Critical buds in soil are starting to turn purple while its clone in coco coir has typical green/orange buds.
|
Something about the soil seems to bringing out shades of purple on the Peyote Critical genetics. The fan leaves are green
on top but purple underneath. The sugar leaves around the buds and even the buds themselves are starting to turn purple, too. Pretty!
Nearly every leaf is purple when flipped over
The Peyote Critical clone in coco coir (below) has extremely sparkly buds but they're a more
typical green/orange without signs of purple yet. Also beautiful!
Perhaps the properties of the grow medium have an effect on bud color. It could also be the nutrients (nutrients from the soil vs bottled nutrients) and/or pH (pH is close to 7 in soil, but closer to 6 in coco). I'll be doing more experiments in the future to
tease out what's specifically causing the differences in bud expression.
I expect to harvest these plants in November. Check out my Instagram profile for regular updates or watch this space in the newsletter for results next month. I will report the final yields, publish lab tests for terpenes/cannabinoids, and share smoke reports. I am so excited to see the bud differences after harvest. Stay tuned!

~Lindsey
We love making the newsletter and I I'm glad you love it, too. ~Sirius
"Thank you Sirus and Nebula!"
~Scott
Hey, I got mentioned first! Is it weird if I print this out anmd hang it on my fridge? ~Sirius
"Yet again your monthly newsletter comes at the right time, and, covers topics, problems, I am having, have had, or have been wondering why.
Thanks again and again for all the trouble and effort you do, to enable us to grow better, so we may get happily shitfaced, or relief from what ailes us."
~Shane
"Weed: Get happily shitfaced and relief from what ailes you." I know it's not appropriate, but that's a fantastic slogan if I've ever seen one. ~Sirius

"Just wanted to show off my very first grow. Plants are 7 weeks from seeds. Growing in coco loco, 5-gallon cloth containers, and using the knowledge that I gained here for such a successful grow. Mephisto northern cheese haze x sour bubbly. RocBudinc Purple Roc and 2 FastBuds Gorilla glue, all are autoflowering plants."
~RonnieB

[Sirius nods respectfully]
"This is my Aurora Indica mom that I was determined to fit in my flower tent. All branches were bent horizontally into two nets. It was successful resulting in many tops, even though not a conventional way to do it. [First] pic is the before flowering photo."
~802Cannabiswoman
[Sirius looks over the plant...it appears he's giving it consideration. Oh, now he's nodding respectfully. That's a beautiful harvest.]
"After over 3 weeks of snipping and clipping (and clipping and snipping) I'm almost done! I got over 12.5 POUNDS of WW [White Widow] bud!...and man, I am SICK of trimming buds (till next indoor harvest in 3 weeks)! This is a pic of just the stalks headed for the burn barrel. Be some happy
birds flying over?..lol...grow happy! from the hills of N.Y."
~Mr. K
12.5 pounds?! Mr. K, you served a long sentence in "trim jail". I'm glad you're out...for now! [Respectful nod] ~Sirius
Trim Jail: Being trapped by the duty of having to trim way too much weed. Example: "I harvested so much weed, I was in trim jail for 9 hours and watched the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy."
"White widow cheese"
~Teo
[Sirius quickly gives a respectful nod to avoid angering that beautiful beast of a cola.]

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
