What Causes Bananas (“Nanners”)
on Cannabis Buds?
🌳🍌😤🍌🌳
|
|
Bananas or “nanners” are a type of mixed-sex cannabis flower that grow from the middle of cannabis buds as a result of stress or genetics. Bananas are unwelcome in cannabis gardens because they release pollen that can cause developing buds to form seeds. One or two bananas probably won’t
make a whole lot of seeds, but many of them can produce very seedy buds. The earlier they appear in the flowering stage and the more time bananas get to release pollen, the more seeds after harvest. Bananas are essentially a last-ditch attempt by the plant to make seeds for the next generation.
Example of a “Banana” or “Nanner” growing among cannabis buds
Bananas can appear straight or curved. They’re elongated yellow growths which may grow together in bunches like actual bananas. Sometimes they appear white or lime green instead of yellow.
Sometimes a banana appears lime green instead of yellow (picture by DW2)
Bananas start pollinating everything in the area as soon as they appear. If you have a major banana problem it may be best to harvest the plants immediately and cut your losses. Seeds take some time to develop, so if a plant starts herming right around harvest time, you’re much less likely to end up with seeds. However, if they appear at the beginning of the flowering stage with plenty of time for seeds to fully form, you may find tons of seeds falling out of your buds after harvest.
They can appear in bunches just like real bananas
This banana appeared a few days after the grower used the bud back building technique (they cut off the top tip of buds to try to get them to grow more fat and round). Apparently, the plant felt attacked.
What are they? Bananas are...

The plants in soil ended up the most colorful at harvest. The Peyote Critical clone exploded with purple over the last few weeks!
|
Yay for harvest day!
This harvest features two sets of clones. The plants were in 2'x4'x6' tents. 5-gallon fabric pots. Each tent had an ES300 LED grow light. The setups were identical except one tent used soil while the other used coco coir.
The 3 clones from left to right are: Power Africa (high-yielding, heavy feeder), Peyote Critical (super easy to care for, purple tones), and Critical Purple Kush (big fat buds with beautiful plant structure). The smells are out of this world!
This was the soil tent at harvest. The soil tent used Nature's Living Soil Concentrate + Fox Farm Coco Loco soil. No added nutrients except a top dressing of extra soil compost in week 3 of flowering. Otherwise the clones just got plain water.
The soil plants hanging to dry in the grow tent
The coco tent used "Mother Earth Coco Plus Perlite Mix" with the Flora trio plus CaliMagic as nutrients.
Coco harvest drying in the tent
The coco plants were at the beginning of their harvest window (all white trichomes, no clears). They probably could have gone another week or two to pack on more weight but the soil plants were
done and I harvested them at the same time for the sake of the experiment.
The buds will be drying for about 10 days and then buds get lab-tested for cannabinoids and terpenes. The coco plants received only mineral/chemical nutrients, while the soil plants got all their nutrients directly from the grow medium. Since the plants were clones in identical setups, any differences in the buds are likely the result of the grow medium/nutrients. It'll be interesting to see how the buds were affected!
I'll also publish the dry weights and smoke reports after buds have been dried and cured for 2 weeks. The soil buds are fatter but the coco plants stretched more and their buds are longer. It seems like the coco plants will win for weight overall, but only the scale will tell!
Stay tuned for the next update :)

"Awesome website with some of the best information I've seen...✌️"
~Jeff
Many thanks, dude! ~Sirius

"I thought I would drop you a line and say thank you for all this great info you have taken the time to help others learn. I am on my 4th grow since finding this site and my product improves with each successive crop. I have been getting many compliments on my bud by many serious smokers, and it is because of what I have learned from you. I have even rediscovered cannabis for myself! Haven’t smoked since the 80s. Growing cannabis is a great source of enjoyment
and relaxation."
~Cesium135
For a lot of growers, the act of growing cannabis ends up being just as important as the cannabis itself. I'm definitely in that group! ~Sirius
"Dear Nebula (and everybody associated with this site),
I just wanted to thank you for the invaluable service you have been (and still are) providing to me with your site.
Thanks to you I learned to do the bubbleponic method and manifolding as you explained both so thoroughly and since the beginning in early 2018 it was nothing but a success.
It's only been for personal and mostly medical use and I cannot even begin to explain what this all meant for me. And all of this because of your public service. So, a big-hearted thank you."
~Christian from Germany
It means a lot to hear that people think of what we do as a public service. 🙏 ~Sirius

Yikes! Another human-eating cannabis plant. This plant has already been harvested, so there's no need to worry for the grower. ~Sirius

I know it's still the begining of November, but I'll accept weed in a costume any day of the year. That includes Sensimilla Santa! ~Sirius
"Dear Nebula and Sirius. It was exactly 1 year ago I decided to start growing my own cannabis and your site has been a tremendous help.
These are from my second grow and my first DWC, thanks to Sirius's Top Fed DWC tutorial and all the useful articles on GWE. My mainlining turned out great and hoping that it would be featured in trophy pic of the week. :)

Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any.
