- What is spinosad, is it safe, and why should you care as a grower? Opinions on this all-natural pesticide are on both sides of the spectrum, but we'll give you an unbiased opinion on what's really going on! This is important information to have, but if you're a commercial grower or considering growing commercially, this article is especially important to you!
- Don't be ashamed if you get bugs. They're a natural part of gardening and almost every soil grower will run into some sort of pest eventually. Did you know there are tons of bug killers than can be used right up until harvest? Get the list!
- Once again, you all opened the floodgates of trophy pictures, and I was overwhelmed by all the goodness I saw! Whenever this happens, it's so tough to choose just a few pictures from so many good ones, but this is my curse to bear. 😂

Spinosad is a common natural insecticide that’s used to kill a wide range of cannabis pests from aphids to caterpillars to spider mites. It’s considered a broad-spectrum insecticide that is both organic and effective.
A common Spinosad product in the US is Monterey Garden Insect Spray
But is it safe? Can it cause harm to humans if it’s used while growing cannabis plants?
Important facts about Spinosad
- Organic and generally considered safe and effective
- Non-toxic to humans, pets, and plants in normal applications
- BUT not allowed for use by commercial growers in parts of the world

What is Spinosad effective against?

Where is it banned?
Spinosad has been banned for sales or commercial use in the following places. As far as we know, there is no comprehensive list of places where it’s regulated, so we’ve pieced this list together from talking with growers around the world.
- USA (available but banned for cannabis growers in the following states)
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Washington
- Canada (not available for purchase, currently under re-evaluation by the Canadian government)
- …and possibly more! If you’re worried, use an alternative product.
