2021 Cannabis Trends
(Strains, Legality, Edibles, etc.)
📸🌳🤘😎
|
|
Not long ago, cannabis was illegal in just about every part of the world. Thankfully, this amazing plant is finally being recognized as a safe alternative for many people who seek relief and enjoyment. Today we’ll look at seven 2021 trends in the cannabis movement that affect cannabis
enthusiasts and growers.
2021 is shaping out to be a big year for cannabis!
1.) 2021 Legal Status (Legalization is Spreading)
More people can legally enjoy and grow cannabis now than ever. Once-hostile countries are discussing legalization, and several countries have granted adults the right to grow and use cannabis plants.
Currently legal to grow weed
2021 United States Legalization Updates – sign up for the Marijuana Moment newsletter for US legalization news
- Good news
- Bad news
- Hawaii, Maryland, and Wyoming – legalization initiatives died this year :(
- South Dakota – voters legalized adult-use cannabis in 2020, but the initiative was recently ruled unconstitutional by a judge
- Bonus good news: Mushroom and psychedelic legal status changes.
- Positive bills, rulings, & proposals: California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Missouri, New York, Texas, Washington,
and dozens of US cities.
- Criminal penalties removed in Oregon and Washington, DC. City
measures passed in Denver, Oakland, Santa Cruz, Ann Arbor, Somerville, and Cambridge.
Out of 7.6 billion people in the world, 227 million live in a country with legal weed and legal home grow. It's a start towards worldwide herbal freedom, but there’s a long way to go.
2.) More/Different Genetic Options
2021 continues to see dramatic increases in strain availability as more people grow at home and try their hand at breeding. This past year has witnessed thousands of new strains hit the market from hundreds of new breeders. The cannabis seed industry is experiencing a total revolution, with new genetic options that growers like me would never have dreamed of just a few years ago.
As a result…
- Easier to buy seeds now than ever
- Tons of new breeders are entering the scene (both great and terrible)
Even with everything going on, people can get seeds delivered almost anywhere in the world.
Seed shopping is different
- Less emphasis on isolated strains that are maintained and developed over years (i.e. Blue Dream, Purple Critical Kush)
- Lots more limited edition seed “drops” and one-time crosses.
- Genetics come and go at a rapid pace. Strains and even breeders are often gone by the time you get to harvest.
- More parts of the world are contributing strains, resulting in unique new genetics
- More information available regarding cannabinoids and effects, making it easier to find strains that are high CBD, high THC, effect-specific, etc.
New strains tend to come and go. I recently grew this Ocean Fruit by Square One Genetics. By the time I harvested and recommended the strain to a friend, it was long gone.
Strain names
- Strain names are getting tastier. Many new strains are delightfully named after sweet smells, desserts, candy, and other tasty treats. I personally feel this trend is simply an effective marketing ploy as I haven’t found these names to be particularly accurate.
- Many seeds are labeled only with their genetic breeding history (i.e. “Pink Wifi #4 x (Lemon Sorbet x Girl Scout Cookies)” or “Mandarin Sunset RBx1”)
These Mandarin Cookies buds smelled like great weed… but absolutely nothing like mandarin oranges or cookies.
3.) Bud Appearance is Changing
People’s preferences are changing as their choices expand...
Keep reading to learn how new strains look different from old ones, why so many seed banks have moved, how edibles are changing the cannabis
industry, and other important trends in 2021!
Quick Grow Light Breakdown
|
Have you ever wanted an ultra-quick breakdown of all modern grow lights that are used for cannabis cultivation? This quick list covers everything from CFLs to LEDs to LECs.
|
Fluorescents (CFls & T5s) – Cheap to get started, effective light spectrum, but a little underpowered
Metal Halide (MH) – Powerful light most commonly used for the vegetative stage. One big bulb.
High Pressure Sodium (HPS) – Powerful light most commonly used for the flowering stage. HPS lights get excellent yields. Although home growers have mostly switched to LEDs or LECs, MH and HPS are still popular grow lights for commercial growers.
LEC Grow Light – Essentially a mix between a Metal Halide and an HPS grow light. These lights may increase overall THC and terpene levels of your buds.
LED Grow Light – These light panels use several small LED diodes instead of a bulb. Older models typically produced purple light while newer LEDs often produce a
wider spectrum of light that appears more white. The technology for LEDs has improved quite a bit over the last decade, and these days they easily compete with HPS grow lights on yields and bud quality.

[This is a response to last week's mini-discussion on dispensary prices.]
"I can only say the following on the issue of dispensary prices:
- Thank goodness that I live in California and am able to grow my own!
- Thank goodness for your website, because in three grows, I have become a competent cultivator. Without your generous information, I would still be struggling to learn what it takes to grow smokable weed.
- Due to my condition, I need help in controlling depression. I refuse to take chemical drugs that do nothing except make the drug companies more money. The same is true with dispensaries, where they charge $50 plus per 1/8 for average smoke. Weed is my medication, and being able to grow my own that is affordable has improved my life without measure.
Thanks for all your help,"
~Compy
Thanks for writing in, Compy. The vast majority of people who wrote us in response to last week's article agree with you. Dispensary prices are much higher than they should be, especially considering that so many of them claim to serve patients.
Luckily, this is a fight that's being won by regular people! As you can see by today's article, most states have some form of legalization or are planning for it in the very near future. As long as we make our representatives keep their word, we should all be smoking openly in just a few years!

"I just want to say, thank you. This site is my go to, and I have spent hours on here. I love this site, thanks again."
~Mark
We love this site, too! 😂 Seriously, thanks for the kind words. ~Sirius
"Thank you for your kindness, I am very impressed with your web-site, I have found myself running to it constantly! Every time I find what I need in seconds, Growing this plant is so damn much fun it should be illegal, ha ha."
~Kevin
Agreed! I love growing so much that I can't stop...and now I have cabinets filled with weed-packed* mason jars. ~Sirius
*I don't actually pack the mason jars; that's a good way to get mold.
|
"Growing a strain I picked up from White Widow Seed Bank. I'm not sure whose breed it is. They advertise it as Top 30. It's just finished up week 4 of flower. It's growing quite well with about 4-5 weeks remaining to finish up.
Someone on the GWE forum suggested I submit the picture for pic of the week.
This is my 12th grow in DWC and I do credit the GWE site and forum for guiding me through from my 1st grow til now. Thanks for the help!"
~Drekthar
Whoever told you to submit the picture was correct; this is good stuff! ~Sirius

"Orka sativa 1st time grower. Day 11 switch lighting to 12/12"
~Jay
Is this plant gazing out the window? It's being a bit dramatic...and I like it. ~Sirius
~Shelbiz
Wow, that is indeed a strange flower and I do indeed like the coco bubba kush. You're 2 for 2! 🏆~Sirius
"This nice plant with a 3-stemmed whorled phyllotaxis came up. I just think it's pretty. Just about to flower."
~Professor
That plant is super-photogenic. Someone get this thing a modeling contract! ~Sirius
"It is the information you give out so freely on your site that has made it able for me to grow like this. Wonder Woman in the big tent end GG #4 in the other, but what I really wanted to show you is how I do my bonsai mothers. I can keep 6 mothers under a 4 foot lamp and
keep them under 8 inches. I throw away more clippings than I could ever use. Thank you for the knowledge."
~Picnix
You did a great job on those bonsais and I dig the pictures you took. I'd definitely like to see more of those! ~Sirius
Look closely at the next twp pictures. There's WAY more stem than you'd initially think...
