What is the Solo Cup Challenge?
(Grow Weed in a Cup)
🥤➕🌳🤯😍
|
|
Why grow cannabis plants in solo cups? It’s a silly and captivating project for any cannabis grower who wants some fun on the side and a little bonus weed.
The Solo Cup Challenge
- Grow a weed plant from beginning to end in a solo cup or other small cup
- See which plant looks the most impressive or gets the best yields
Why It’s Hard
- Plant roots get unhappy when constricted and solo cup plants may get rootbound and die.
- You have to give absolutely optimal conditions because the plant is not resilient to problems
- Can be difficult to water plants often enough as they get bigger. Some growers must water plants multiple times a day either by hand or with a drip feed so they don’t dry out.
- Can be difficult to balance plants due to the tippy nature of cups
There’s no real reason to grow this way… but it’s so fun! Here are some examples.
Here’s my first attempt at the solo cup challenge, circa 2010. All of these plants were given a 12/12 light schedule from seed to get them to start flowering (making buds) as soon as
possible.
One seedling did not make it lol. This was the result of heat plus overwatering.
I learned and this one did much better
Definitely not the healthiest leaves at harvest, but it produced 0.75 oz of premium bud under a handful of CFL bulbs!
Now let's look at the entries you all sent it!
I think this entry by DeadlyFruit may be one of the cutest so far. Not fair to sneak in baby bunnies! 🙂 ~Nebula
Here’s a few solo cup pics and a couple off-topic pictures to brighten your day.
I didn’t intentionally grow in solo cups, these were just the tops of manifolded plants (Mimosa EVO) that I couldn’t bring myself to toss. I snipped them and stuck them straight in a cup of coco with no extra love or rooting gel, put them off to the side out of direct light and watered them with the leftovers from my full size plants, otherwise pretty much
ignoring them… they couldn’t be killed! They don’t call it a weed for nothing. They were so top-heavy the fan would blow them over when they needed watering. Not a huge harvest but some small, dense, generally respectable nugs I wouldn’t otherwise have had.
The off-topic pics are a litter of bunnies that momma had in a planter pot a week ago (sadly just a rosemary plant) right outside my back door. So much for letting my dog run around in the back yard for a few weeks while they grow up enough to leave the warren🙂 (he
is a type that was bred to hunt rabbits and small game and can’t be let anywhere near them). Apparently rabbits have babies in yards with dogs to keep other predators away, but they picked my yard with a dog that specializes in catching rabbits. Slight miscalculation but they were lucky we saw them before he did (unlike last year).
Great site!
DeadlyFruit
P.S. And who doesn’t like bunnies! (pics taken with a zoom and they were left undisturbed so there wouldn’t be a risk momma would reject them)
Thanks for sending this in, these little bunnies are enchanting! ~Nebula

Have you seen these weird markings on your leaves? They're commonly mistaken for a nutrient deficiency because the real culprit (thrips) are so small they're difficult to see with the naked eye. Unfortunately they seem to be out in full force this year. Learn how to identify and get rid of thrips!
|
Unlike thrips, which make irregular blotchy patches, spider mite symptoms look more like speckles or dots. This is because each spot is a bite mark from a hungry little mite. The bugs are tiny but fast moving, and you may be able to see them if you look under the
leaves. If the infestation gets out of control, you will also start seeing webbing on your plants. Learn how to identify and get rid of spider mites!
Are those CHUNKS missing off my leaves?! When you're seeing holes in your cannabis leaves, one of the most common culprits is the humble caterpillar. Learn how to identify
and get rid of caterpillars (it's easy, you just need "BT" caterpillar spray)
There are lots of things that can take bites out of your leaves. Although caterpillars may be the most common, you may not realize that harmless seeming grasshoppers will happily munch on your leaves too. Learn how to identify and get rid of grasshoppers!
Have you been trying to identify which pest is "bugging" your plants? (I'm sorry I don't know if that even counts as a pun) Reply to this email with pictures of the bugs/damage and we'll help you identify them!
This Week in Cannabis Legalization...
|
|
In 2018, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled that the country’s ban on cannabis was unconstitutional. This ruling applies to personal possession, private use, sharing/trading and home cultivation. It gave the Mexican government until June 2021 to enact laws, but the legislation stalled.
A few days ago, the Supreme Court noted the lack of progress and struck down several laws against recreational cannabis. Here are some details. It is likely the legislature will get involved again to make the rules more clear.
|
In the United States, adult-use legalization went into effect this week for Connecticut, New Mexico, and Virginia. New Mexico and Virginia allow home cultivation! Unfortunately it's still illegal to grow your own
weed in Connecticut, but at least people will stop getting arrested for possession.
Spider Farmer vs Mars Hydro LED grow journal update

Pacific Punch on day 62 of Flowering. So sparkly!
|
I got requests to see the plants in their tents with the LEDs on to get a sort of better look of the inside of the tents. Here they are!
Spider Farmer tent (flowering day 62)
Mars Hydro tent (flowering day 62)
We are getting sooooo close to harvest. I think next week’s pictures will include the buds drying! I will give all the plants one last “photo shoot” before harvest so you get an up-close-and-personal look of each plant and its buds!
Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Nebula

"I just love you folks!!! I am now in my 5 year growing as a hobbyist and because of your site each grow keeps getting better. No B.S. ... just the good solid info on about anything one could imagine. I have a question...I type it in your search...and there are answers to my questions.
Who said you can't teach an old (live) dog new tricks?"

We should all keep learning for as long as we can. Let's keep our brains nice and exercised. ~Sirius

"Hi, Boobah from Downunder, sent you previous pics of my Monster crop.
After seeing your article about Monster cropping I thought that I would send you an update. Day 41 after switching to 12/12 cycle. Stand alone DWC 20 litre buckets, each plant under a Viparspectra P2000 LED at the recommended heights. Monster Crop, start today!!"
Cheers
~Boobah
So that's where all my delicious looking colas went! 😂 I'll just take a few of those...🤏 ~Sirius
~Uncle Ed 55
You weren't kidding; those plants are so frosty! Is...is it possible for a cannabis plant to be too frosty? If so, this is a (amazing-looking) contender. ~Sirius

- 12-12 From Seed – Flowering Plants Early - Want small plants that finish as quickly as possible? 12-12 from seed is the way to do it! This trick will get your plants to start flowering as soon as they're able to do it. They'll be small, but they'll be fast.
- Auto-Flowering Cannabis Strains Guide - Photoperiod cannabis plants need you or the sun to tell them to start flowering (making buds). Autoflowering cannabis plants are the same in pretty much every way except that they decide when it's time to flower. It sounds like a pain, but it's actually super convenient!
- Complete Guide to Cannabis Plant Training - If you're not concerned with finishing the grow quickly, it becomes possible to grow much larger plants that yield significantly more weed. But those plants can be unruly, and plant training will be necessary if you want the grow to go smoothly.
- How to Make Feminized Seeds at Home - We're much too lazy to make our own seeds, and we purchase them from seedbanks. However, some growing scientists out there love trying this stuff for the sake of experimentation. If you're looking for something new to try, this is an exciting challenge!
